Just noticed I mentioned Tally Lamp(s) as in plural at 10:25. In reality there is only one tally lamp, the one you can see on front/top. The rear LED indicator isn't technically a tally lamp, buts it's the card reader activity light. It's a de facto tally lamp, though, because it will illuminate red when recording. Just a little detail that needed some clarification.
Another one of my faves that I somehow forgot to include is shooting XF-AVC proxies directly to SD Card, and use that for editing, then relink the RAW. Pretty convenient now that we have SD Cards on modern MacBooks and Mac Studio.
Fantastic video with great tips! Thanks
Great tips I just got mine!! So this is super helpful!!
Great video. Learned a lot!
very helpful, thank you!
Great review!
Your video is better and most complete than a lot of camera reviewers. The USB power delivery is the way to go.
Your videos are high quality
Great vídeo! Ir you wanna reset point focus Its simple… press the cancell button 👍🏼
To reset the focus recital hit the cancel/trash can button.
Nice! I thought for sure I had tried that. I wish it was like the r5, but this is great. 🔥
Amazing video! Thank you! I really want this camera!
It is a great camera. It’s not perfect of course, but it far surpassed my expectations. It’s insane that you can have a camera with this much power that fits in the palm of you hand for less than 5K. 8K60p is absurd.
Very intriguing camera
Good job reviewing this camera, now I want one, thanks for making me poorer.
I come from a Blackmagic pocket camera (here you can complain about the battery solution because it is for film) and have an older canon to shoot pictures with. After buying this hybrid camera, I have one that solves both needs almost perfectly. You are on point here with HDMI, but I don't quite agree with the battery part, yes it could be a different battery - but as a Canon shooter I already have some of the batteries that can be used when I shoot pictures. It would be too optimistic to think that it is enough to shoot 4K or 8K with, so if you are ambitious about film you will in any case expand with a cage and V-mount solution for the battery part and here the camera is again nicely compact and can easily solve multiple purposes, such as getting on a gimbal or an FPV drone. Thank you for a nice and thorough review.
I have the R5C and the M1 Max. It’s incredible. Before I would have to shoot ALL-I 4K because IPB would be so hard to edit with it’s compressed codec. Now I can shot H.265 IPB 8k and it’s only 20% larger than All-I 4K. 8K is actually practical with this computer and camera! The M1 MAX cuts through any footage like butter 🧈 It’s worth every penny.
In any of the frame rates as well? I’ve got an m1 Mac book pro and still need to make proxies for any of my 60-120fps shots coming out of my c70.
@@cgthevision8958 I haven’t made proxy’s for anything on the M1 MAX. Not even 8K.
Great video, how much watt MacBook charger is you are using to power, is that charger has ANY negative effect battery or camera?
Masterful rundown of features that will help potential buyers and inform us video newcomers about the state of video with Canon's R series cameras.
I'm coming from the still photography area and so the R5 was a natural fit. I assume that the R5C in video mode is "exactly" what video people want and so the lack of focusing options doesn't bother them and, to be honest, I used very few of the different focusing modes.
I'm still completely unfamiliar with the R5C in video mode. I was hoping to learn something from this video but I think I already knew everything here -- that's not meant to be a slight or a boast. I did enjoy watching it and got a bit of confidence that at least I'm learning things.
How would the face priority work with multiples faces? can you select which face to track?
I do have a high tech question. The "Shutter Mode" (Camera Setup, tab 2, top item) can be "Slow" and the book says that in this mode, the shutter can be (for example) 1/4s when shooting 29.97fps or 59.94fps (page 72). How is that possible?
I haven't had the issues with third-party batteries you mentioned. Had a week with mine while on vacation, about half each day I was using a Neewer battery.
I have the R5 without C, do you think i should upgrade to this one? But i heard, that this one doesnt have IBIS?
Great vid! One think I don’t fully appreciate is the role of bit rate on 8k recording. I know it impact file size tremendously, but what about the quality of the final video, assuming the final destination is UA-cam in 4k. I assume youtube is going to compress the video even more than it was, but how loose can you be in the camera to still get good quality on youtube. And why does Canon seem to always want to put in the higher bit rate codecs in cameras like the r5? It feels like a cripple-hammer type deal is a sort of passive-aggressive way. Thanks.
Ahah if you ever get to live in Japan, passive-aggressiveness is their thing
Without a C fast card reader. How do I download files?
22:00 on the C70 I can reset focus reticle by pressing "cancel." maybe try that?
Great vid! Currently looking into the r5c, but on the fence as a c70 owner.
Yeah, the C70's ND, XLR, and battery life are killer features for sure. Especially if you never shoot stills. I do feel like, at least compared to my last hands-on with the C70, that the R5 C has significantly better AF performance. But maybe firmware updates have fixed that on the C70?
@@9to5Mac I doubt that. Direct X is superior for autofocus according to Canon, but I did not expect the C70 to get internal RAW video either so what do I know?
In my opinion the R5C is better, with external peripherals it's does everything better than the c70.
@@paulrox177 internal nd’s + the dgo sensor make it a much more video centric tool. Many people are caught up in resolution but image quality isn’t everything. The r5c is definitely an amazing piece of tech, but the c70 holds its own.
looks awesome! Also really good video! Only the time when you switch between photo / video is too long.
Great video! I recently started shooting with the R5 C and was wondering how the Dual Base ISO is supposed to work. I have been shooting mostly in 4K XFAVC and have tested all of the raw modes (HQ included) and have been able to shoot as low as 160 ISO in every mode. Are there advantages to setting a higher base ISO? Why is this even an option? Also, do you have a preference in the 10 Bit modes between GOP or Intra? Thanks for the awesome video! you got a new sub here!
The ISOs with the cleanest image are going to come from 800 & 3200 when shooting video. They also provide the most dynamic range. Starting off at 800 is best but maybe that’s too dark for the “scene” and you’ve got to go up. You’re better off going to 3200 and ND’ing down then going to let’s say 2000 without an ND.
@@BrandonTalbot Awesome, thanks for the reply! That's what I was thinking was the case. I recently rented the GH6 and with the DR boost on, shooting Vlog the minimum ISO was 2000 and the image looked great. It's tough finding good information on the R5 C right now, appreciate you weighing in.
@@BrandonTalbot I just wish I understood being an EE / CS guy how they can tune for two ISOs.
thank you for video. What bothers me is that the battery life is so bad. It only takes half an hour. I have to buy 2 portable chargers and connect them with a cable. xiaomi brand. 20000 amp 45 watts. I guess I'll have to buy a vmount battery.
Odd that they go so such lengths to make it a camcorder, but it's still missing smooth zoom control with a capable lens.
This fixes all my annoyances with my R6. I knew I should’ve skipped this video.
@9to5Mac You did not mention the hotshoe XLR adapter
@@9to5Mac Sure but then you mentioned the lack of XLR ports as a flaw without mentioning the Tascam/TEAC adapter as a solution. When you mentioned the lack of ND filters, you then mentioned the drop-in filter adapter.
@@robertm3951 I mean, I get it, but they still require "expensive" add-ons to get these features. The point being, they aren't built in like they are on other cinema cameras. But yeah, I get what you're saying; just different philosophies I guess. 🤷🏼♂️
👍🏻
Preffer the R5. Put a ninja on it, solves all the problems it has. People buying the R5 C will rig it and put a monitor on it anyway. lol
I would have watched If you did six things. There’s inflation, sir.
Awful audio!
Yeah but it doesn't have IBIS. #Fail once again! #CanonCrippleHammer
if youre buying this camera you should be ready to use a gimbal. this isnt a vloggers camera for walking around.
@@MRMSFamily Just because something was done a certain way for decades, doesn't mean that it can't or shouldn't ever be done any other way. Why make cameras smaller then, since they've always been massive? IBIS should be an on/off feature for those that want/need it.
@@garrettstevensen2467 The main reason Canon makes R5C is to fulfill the need of cinematographers who need to attach the camera to the Car, Shoulder Rig, or any need for natural camera movement.
When you mention "CrippleHammer", that word leans toward the holding back Technology, which in this case Canon seems just don't have the technology yet to turn on or of the IBIS at the same time with delivering the expected technology. (otherwise, he might have put it into his Flagship Cinema Model).
I agree with you with the term CanonCrippleHammer, "but" that was Canon in the past. Now, they seem putting everything to the table to impress the user.
Mac users should just get Blackmagic cameras. Canon sucks.
Blackmagic cameras are great, but so are Canon cameras. The audience doesn’t completely overlap, especially for one-person-bands that need auto focus.
@@9to5Mac honestly going from the bmpcc6k to R5 was a very underwhelming experience. Unfortunately Canon hasn’t updated their user experience since forever. The app eco system is on-par with most domestic Japanese firms which are unusable.
@@9to5Mac while I’ve got the chance I’d like to commend you for increasing your output of quality videos for all of us to enjoy. Thank you!
This is the best video I’ve seen on this camera. I literally learned so many new things I’ve never heard anyone talk about. I’m pretty much sold on this camera now thanks to your video!
Appreciate it, Dave! Means a lot coming from you. Thanks for watching.
@@9to5Mac is there a way to swap the red c logo and shutter button to black like base r5?
