The timeless qualities of traditional tunes can carry us across oceans and eons, linking us not only to the past but to each other as well. It was under the banner of those eternal connections that the trio of Bonny Light Horseman came together. From festival fields and a German art hub to a snowy upstate studio and everywhere in between, the astral folk outfit-comprised of Anaïs Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson (Fruit Bats, The Shins), and Josh Kaufman (The National, Bob Weir)-is mixing the ancient, mystical medium of transatlantic traditional folk music with a contemporary, collective brush. The resulting album, Bonny Light Horseman, is an elusive kind of sonic event: a bottled blend of lightning and synergy that will excite fans of multiple genres, eras, and ages.
The album features fellow 37d03d artists-in-residence Michael Lewis (bass, saxophone) and JT Bates (drums) as well as Justin Vernon, Aaron Dessner, Kate Stables, Lisa Hannigan, The Staves, Christian Lee Hutson, and more. Leaving the 2018 37d03d Berlin event with roughly 60-percent of a record, the band reconvened at Dreamland Studios in Woodstock, NY, in January 2019 to finish, bringing Lewis and Bates as well as engineer Bella Blasko along with them.

My wife and I were lucky enough to learn about this band at an outdoor venue on our honeymoon. They opened for Bon Iver. We found ourselves front row center as the sun was setting over the ocean, and we watched as thousands of people went from paying no attention to Bonny Light Horsemen, to one by one growing silent and starring in fixation as Bonny Light started playing Deep in Love. Even Justin Vernon of Bon Iver poked his head out from behind the curtain and started filming them, bopping his head with the rhythm as a huge smile appeared on his face like a proud parent. We were all hooked, and Bonny Light went on to play the rest of their eponymous album to an increasingly delighted crowd. It was the most wholesome moment in music I've ever seen, and I'll always cherish that memory.
At the Riverport Theatre in Saint Louis! I was there too at the time with my ex girlfriend. It was so awesome Justin Vernon ended up playing with Bon Over at the end of the night! Will always remember that day. These guys are truly fantastic...

I grew up listening to the «oldie goldies» from the traditional rock scene, and in my teens I used to say that «the best music has already been made». I was convinced Pink Floyd and Dire Straits nailed it and could not be matched (I still do of course). Now, 15 years later I can thankfully admit that I was wrong, and my favourite musicians and bands are contemporary and I never stop finding new, beautiful music.

Came home from work late, sat down and began listing to this tune for the first time. Began to cry!! 68 years old and wondering what's up with that? So beautiful and felt it grab right a hold of some mysterious place inside and away I went.....

I was just imagining that
I'm so happy to hear others expressing basically the same thing - this is the most beautiful song I have ever heard or experienced - as in it feels like something other than music. Have listened to it a minimum of 200 times over the past two days, and not a single part has grown stale. It expressed to me something like the force of love in creation.

Sometimes I think of life's accomplishments as seen at midnight on an airplane fight looking out the window...
A long, flat, infinite grid with tiny lights, and pockets of darkness.
But I also see radiant pieces of light reaching down from the heavens, connecting to those little lights... And in each one of those ribbons of light is something on earth that enlightens us, or changes us for the better. But this is always a forward motion. And it's localized for a city, or perhaps localized only from our current understanding of our society at the time. Where we are now.
But every once in awhile, I'll see a lone radiant light stretching way behind this collection of moving aura... This song is one of those bands of light. As if it was allowed to move with the other bands of light. Not sure why. Maybe it's just because it's transcended time. Just so well-written... this song has so much to give.
Like I said it's up there with Dylan.. or Mitchell.
