Lodge of Sorceresses : You'll stay here for decades and are not permitted to leave until your training is complete. College of Winterhold : Here's a novice level ward .... Good luck, Arch-Mage!
The Lodge wasn't a school though, it was a group of female sorceresses who got together after the Coup to further the cause of magic. Aretuza was Hogwarts for girls in the Witcher world.
One minor point. It is mentioned in the books that a witcher's touch produces a tingling sensation to witches, and apparently Geralt is particularly good.
It's very interesting how the books vs. the show are about handling Aretuza; the show really makes an emphasis on how much Aretuza and the established sorcerers/sorceresses (the Brotherhood) really dedicate themselves to politics; that they can and will manipulate their students into various powerful courtly positions so that the North is held at a certain kind of controlled equilibrium by the Brotherhood. The books are a little more ambiguous; there's signs of manipulation and the like, but it's not completely clear. Many of these sorcerers/sorceresses seem much more interested in more than just politics (that is not to say Philippa and Yennefer and some other notable sorceresses aren't). It's just very different. The book makes it seem like they have a lot more varied choice post-graduation. The show makes it seem infinitely more politically-driven (and at times as harsh as the Witcher Schools). Plus lol, yeah. I'd say that Geralt (and any other witchers) would be very interesting to the sorceresses. Long-lived, reasonably magic resistant, invulnerable to disease, etc. Geralt's also a pretty decent guy. And eye-catching; cat eyes and snow white hair? Makes him downright *exotic.*
@@noahholderman5725 Yeah most people who liked the Netflix show dont mention this garbage and they think its fine or something, but it felt like some 12 year old wrote this shit. Gazza I agree they messed up big time... one thing that ticked me off the most not gonna lie is that Triss pronounced melitele as Meh-lee-tel-ee.. I know I’m a nerd
@@jacobbynum15 It's a polish story translated to English so there are many linguistic differences due to culture and such, like in Witcher 1 they pronounce things awfully due to poor translation and bad direction but awful writing and changing lore and characters personalities to me is unforgivable which is what Netflix did. Gazza I hear you haha but the other actors/actresses all pronounced it correctly so idk hopefully season 2 is a lot more.. refined.. I’m a huge fan of the franchise and give it a 7/10 at best so I’m afraid what everyone else thinks of it
She was actually talking about her experience as the Rectoress of Aretuza. At the time, Vilgefortz had become an esteemed sorcerer long before she became rectoress. Most of the members of The Lodge (possibly excluding Ida Emean and Assire, because none of them were present at The Battle of Sodden Hill, where Vilgefortz became the hero of Sodden) already knew and saw how powerful Vilgefortz is. So when she said this, she was talking about the current state of the students from Ban Aard, which wasn't as competent as the ones in Aretuza. She wasn't forgetting Vilgefortz because he'd long graduated before her time as Rectoress. And to be honest, Vilgefortz actually became one of the only sorcerers who was incredibly powerful both in magic and politics, because the other powerful and competent sorcerers were already killed during the coup in Thanedd, leaving only rather mediocre sorcerers (except Vilgefortz, of course).

Horrible and yet so important. Her final decision along with her death really makes the complexity of the character. She is not evil and yet she is not good. Phil is the ‘’greyest’’ character in my opinion (though netflix will probably make her a 100% evil b**ch with no balance at all)
Hey great channel- love the Witcher series. Question any chance you could do a lore video(s) on the northern kings? Lands they control, what sorcerers are assigned, family idk I thought it could be a cool thing
In the ship if you ask her margarita says The Council and Conclave ordered the Redanian attack of Aretuza. Radovid probably conquered the school with Carduin and his mage council
Could you please make a video about that silver tabby cat that's seen with Marguerita? Seen that cat in multiple cutscenes of the Witcher 3 game, and it puzzles me as to how/why that cat does not hiss & yowl at Geralt like other cats do, let alone why this cat keeps following Geralt....
What I want to know was Yenefer's transformation and sterilization mandatory. I ask because when watching the show, she kept going on about the school doing this to her, when it looked like it was her choice.
Excellent video as always, WG. Can you do a video on witcher weaponry? Everyone knows they carry a silver and steel blade, but length, materials, hilts, blacksmiths and such? I know a lot of this is mentioned in the game and books, and it goes somewhat in depth!
Where did you read in depth description of swords !? Steel sword is regular sword with runes etched on it. Silver sword is compound of steel coated with silver and is not used that much. Geralt have hobby for weaponry, because well he likes swords and his armors. There is nothing that much "in depth" about swords weaponry. The only descriptions of weapons is when he first encounter some soldiers, with different weapons or any character with weapon so we get description to imagine how it looks. But its mostly medieval weapons. Very well known.
It's interesting that Aretuza admitted some students for money, bc it means that magic could be learnt to some extent even if you don't have talent for it.
Great video. I've played all the games (multiple times). Watched the Show. Now are reading the novels so this knowledge was helpful trying to piece everything together. Thanks!
