Because movies need conflict. A straightforward love story isn't considered interesting enough to warrant an hour and a half film. Boy meets girl, they both like each other immediately, and they don't lie or cheat or misunderstand anything... Doesn't really translate into a plot. Something needs to keep them apart and usually a lie is easier to forgive and resolve in the final act than most other obstacles, especially if the robe is meant to be light and funny.
