This is such a beloved band here in Canada. The final tour was so beautifully sad, knowing it was the last. Not a dry eye in the stadium, everyone singing with their full chests, coming together to say goodbye to Gord. He is still missed by so many to this day. ❤
and this was the last song he song there, the last lyrics "and disappointing you is getting me down" mad me cry
Canada's Poet Laureate who when he found out he was dying from Cancer ramped it up one more time. Nation wide Tour Their last concert in their hometown, 1/3rd of the entire country watched it Live. Towns shut down their Main Streets or Parks, installed huge screens and we all met, wept and revelled in them one last time.
Cried and grieved with my family and friends to that last concert. So uniquely Canadian. Such a beautiful singer. RIP Gord Downie, Canada lost a part of it's soul with you.
I think the song is about how, when we're kids, we think about our future, and it rarely turns out how we thought. But we live our lives and do it as well as we can anyway. We do it together, the way we climbed trees and daydreamed as kids. Even when we get stung by a hornet or doubt creeps in, we don't stop trying to live our lives and make good things happen together. The kid doesn't have terrible memories of climbing trees with his friend just because he got stung. He remembers that this is how he started the love story of his life with the girl he grew up to marry. It didn't have to be perfect. It's good because they did it together. She freed herself from the doubt and the things holding her back, and he is trying to do the same thing. That she did free herself is why he says she's ahead by a century. (It's fairly common knowledge that girls are more likely to be emotionally intelligent and cope better than boys at a younger age. We are taught it and expected to live it more than other kinds of intelligence or skill. So, not uncommon for him to look to his wife for the example of how to deal, even back when they were kids.) Many Canadians will tell you, we call the band "The Hip," and it is pretty much accepted fact that they are the best, most Canadian, band. Iconic. Like, the Celine Dion of Canadian bands. As much a part of our musical identity as the Maple Leaf. I swear, there are people who can quote you where they were when they heard about Gord Downie's terminal cancer and later, his death, the way Americans of a certain age tell you about the day the music died. (Yes, I went there. A full-on, Buddy Holly died, American Pie lyric reference.) It was wrenching for many of us to lose the poet laureate of our Canadian experience. But he went out with serious class, touring the nation he loved and saying goodbye with music. Totally us. Glad you're open to different music, even if it's not immediately easy to decode. Poetry is like that. Some of the best songs take a bit to sink in. Some grow on you. This one's a grower, hon. You'll get there.
Dude you just stumbled across Canada's most beloved band. Gord Downie lead singer was a presence to be hold on stage. He was diagnosed with brain cancer and decided to give Canada one final goodbye. And a third of the country watched free broadcast of the final performance. My heart broke when he passed away a genuinely beautiful person. Thanks for the memories. New Orleans is sinking, long time running, Bob Caygen, Boots or Hearts and Little Bones are a few you might enjoy. Great reaction and Peace out ✌️ ☮️ 🙏
The Tragically Hip are a Canadian National Treasure.
Lead singer Gord Downie was ahead of his time but never forgotten.⭐
Gord Downie 1964-2017💔💖
Check the song Courage.....
No dress rehearsal this is our life!! Truth!!
Sept 20 on Prime a 4 part documentary on called The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal. It just opened TIFF Toronto International Film Festival).
Greetings from Canada. In Gord we trust. Gord Downie that is. Peace, love and bellbottoms.
This song is about past, present and future.
And as much as this is a bit of a love song about looking towards the future it can also take many meanings. Like political progression and where as society we can live in a more idealistic world.
When you hear "you are ahead by a century" it's probably better to not think of yourself but your partner or the society you're in.
And the slight changes from first verse to second with how the dream is first "where the hornet stung me" to "when the hornet stung me" and from having a feverish dream to having a serious dream.
So before you were a child thinking of the future, but now that you're in the future life is more real.
The line "with revenge and doubt we smoke them out" has dual meaning because the song is also about the birds and the bees and learning as children. Having either your revenge on actual bees with smoke to get rid of them, or metaphorically after doing the deed you have a smoke session (wacky tobaccy or just cigarettes).
And the songs conclusion with "disappointing you is getting me down".
Contains everything we feel for when we don't meet our partners or our societies future potential.
Videos are not always meant to understood, they were a creative venue by production companies sometimes the artists had a say other times they did not. As a viewer of MuchMusic and MTV videos as they came out the art of the videos was not always reflected as the art of the musician and we therefore learned to not necessarily try and decipher a real meaning of one to the other, there are exceptions, but most times enjoy the song for what it is and the video for creativity of what it is. If one is prone to decipher a video you may find the original recording best or a live version. Tragically Hip has many good ones to enjoy.
Oh I love this band and this song 💖💖💖
This was the last song he sang in public at their farewell concert before the lead singer died. ua-cam.com/video/n8ffSi2dPtw/v-deo.html
Nearly 1/3 of all Canadians watched the concert, which was broadcast on all three major networks simultaneously. Every bar in Canada had it playing on their TV's, as well as other public venues. Check out the footage: ua-cam.com/video/BKMWwTgZFug/v-deo.html
The Hip are Canadian rock royalty. Other songs to check out "Grace, Too", "Blow at High Dough", "Boots or Hearts"... tons of them.
Canada gave Rush to the world. We kept The Hip for ourselves. ❤️
🤫🤫😉😉😄😄
Everything Canadians have said in these comments is true. I think Courage, Wheat Kings, New Orleans is Sinking, and Fiddler's Green are probably top tunes for me but there's so much more. I believe you may be able to find the Tragically Hip's final concert that was broadcasted nationwide in Canada online somewhere if you're curious to watch it
This song is from 1996. The lead singer died from brain cancer in 2017
They have quite a few Bangers too, Blow at High Dough , New Orleans is Sinking ...many good ones . What confuses many not familiar with Canada is many of their songs are from a uniquely Canadian perspective or about Canadian issue's. This is WHY they are beloved in Canada and most of the rest of the world doesn't understand...Locked in a Trunk is one that NO ONE but a Canadian who was Familiar with Canadian history would get. It's about a kidnapping of a member of parliament and how Canadians were feeling when it happened. Serious stuff.
To me the key line is ‘and disappointing you’s getting me down.’ I think it’s a song about a childhood romance that became an unhappy marriage, and he feels his inability to grow up is the primary cause.
But it’s also implied she was always ahead of him, it just got worse as she matured and he did not. The boy/girl and man/woman are the same characters in later stages. The men he’s running from are just a clear sample of his living like a child, running up debts or similar. As opposed to in childhood when he was running from hornets. He hasn’t changed.
I may be wrong about this, but wasn't there a period of time when Gord's wife was battling breast cancer? This song seems to be about that. The feelings of helplessness when you can't really do anything to help your partner except be there. But again I could be wrong. I should probably Google it. 😬
You'll love their catalogue, AB
Gord was an incredible frontman
At this point, I don't think it generally matters what the song might be about at it's core. For at least 11 million Canadians (and yes, that is a lot when you remember that Canada only has a population of about 38 million), the lyrics "No dress rehearsal/This is our life" and "And disappointing yous getting me down" evoke an extremely poigent and loving memory.
Tonight we smoke them out
As so many white people influenced by or that just love black artists amazing artistic contributions, I get a kick out of black people liking white music. These guys were big in Canada. Music edifies and never divides us.
Ren drops a new one tomorrow, gonna be 🔥 plus just dropped new ones with Chris Webby and Prof!
It's a mosaic.
❤
Art makes you think huh? Sheesh
Video from the 90's and uploaded to UA-cam 15yrs ago
The video is closer to 30-40 years old. Which brings me to a suggestion.... 30 years old is one if their amazing songs.
38.
We still miss Gord up here, eh. :)
And a few of us below the border miss him dearly. I'm so thankful that i got to see them in concert in Cleveland, OH on the Now For Plan A tour. I saw Nautical Disaster on MuchMusic which was on our cable system for a year or so in the early 90's. That song hooked me for life. It wasn't easy finding their music in the states back then, and for many years their debut "Blue" CD was the only music of theirs I had. I listened to it quite a bit, and kept searching. Gord died on my 50th birthday. I tried to sing a Hip song at karaoke that night, but I'm sure i butchered it because of the emotions. 💔
This is 30 years ago. Lol
way better live
Why is it always the same song at the same time by all the reaction channels, y'all just copy eachother ?
They want to use content they know will not get blocked and will get views. But yeah I know what you're seeing, content seem to come in waves.
@@mic7504 ya, and another thing, they all say put a comment, but they never answer !
It does help with the algorithm to get their videos more exposure. If several channels are all covering the same topic at the same time, the algorithm will push it to more ppl.
