As a baker PLEASE don’t use any flowers you just buy from somewhere! You have to wrap the flowers and the stems to make sure none of the pesticides leak into the cake- this can cause serious harm
There’s edible flowers that you can decorate the cake with! That way you’re friend will get to eat the decor, learn about new flower species, and have a pretty cake! For my birthday I want a cake with edible flowers!

These are not food grade, and it doesn’t even look like she washed them beforehand. Do you have any clue how many chemicals and disgusting germs are on store bought flower bouquets?? People are touching and inspecting them ALL DAY, and they DO use chemicals and pesticides on them because, Yknow, they don’t expect people to EAT THEM.

My first thought when the flowers came out was "those better be edible (safe to eat) " other than that I personally wouldn't be opposed to having real flowers on a cake, my mom sells cakes and she always uses fake flowers that you can just remove, real flowers are a gamble if you don't know what you're doing.
