The UW Milwaukee has the original commercial with its jingle. I was doing my research on this and found it there. I made contact. They said that I could come in to view the commercial. But couldn't obtain a copy of it. I never followed thru. But I loved the jingle.
Arnold Stang, along with Marvin Kaplan, were the gas station attendants in the comedy epic "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World." Both were also voices on Top Cat.
I remember Shelly's original commercials. I like him because I'm a sucker for Jimmy Durante type characters, like Hanna-Barbera's Doggie Daddy. The cereal was pretty good, too.
The design of the masked Shelly The Turtle character looks like a cross between Darkwing Duck and Iago The Parrot from Disney's "Aladdin" . I feel like Arnold Stag's voice doesn't fit that masked Shelly The Turtle very well. I expected him to have a voice simular to Zorro's voice, more smooth and with an accent.
The earliest commercial for Corny Snaps was the other way around, in that Shelly, already with the Durante personality, was trying to coax everyone to come out of THEIR shells (get out of bed) and have Corny Snaps for breakfast. When he mentioned the cereal everyone else would say "Did someone say Corny Snaps?".. In the same commercial he'd suddenly stop playing his piano and say "I wanna hear it for Corny Snaps"; everyone would be crunching on the cereal, and Shelly would say "Dat's music to my ears!".. The next set of commercials were what you described- Shelly sleeping until someone else mentions Corny Snaps, at which point he would jerk awake saying (again in Durante fashion) "DID someone say Corny SNAPS??"
Arnold Stang was also the voice of TopCat for Hanna-Barbera he was also a radio actor back in the 1940s doing lots of radio programs like the Goldbergs and Henry Morgan show
I turned 11 the year that this cereal was apparently released. You'd think it would still be in my childhood sweet spot. But I have zero memory of it. Not a trace.
He was also the voice of Herman the mouse in those old paramount pictures cartoons in the 1950s and use the same voice. He would use for the honey nut Cheerios bee. a voice that he developed over his many years on radio
"The town of Durango.." ..🤔 hmm, being that this was an American cereal/commercial, and there are only 3 towns in America named Durango, my guess is the commercial represented Durango, Texas⭐🇺🇸. Especially based on the Spanish Tile pitched roofing of the buildings.
I lived in Durango, Colorado, for a couple of years as a kid-1980-1982-exactly one year after this cereal was discontinued. I didn’t see any residual “S” markings on posters there, so I’d bet you’re right.
@@eerieeric834 one prize I could remember from my day was Cap'n Crunch's submarine that ran off of baking soda to make it rise, then sink, then rise again.
Probably a dumb question, Gabe, but do you ever save any of the cereal from really old boxes like this one? And, yes, for all that's holy in the world, please bring back prizes in boxes of cereal!
This cereal was awful! It tasted really good at first bite but then this horrible salty after taste would assault your taste buds! My mom didn't believe in waste so she made us eat the whole box but promised never to buy it again.

Love these historical videos especially about ones that were lost to time.
Oh man, 8 yr old me would have carried around that puzzle book for days until every last one was finished.
That is an awesome cereal prize! I would have been stoked to get that as a kid. Actually, I'd be stoked to get that now!
I really appreciate and look forward to your videos, it's so fun learning about all these different kinds of cereals and the stories behind them!
I got some rice Krispy from target yesterday that had a prize inside! I bought it just because! The toy is called a “bowl buddy.”
Maybe they should have put Touché Turtle on the box... Back in the 60s, they had Yogi Bear, Snagglepuss, and Quick Draw McGraw on Kellogg's boxes.
Oh yeah, that voice Arnold Stang had he developed that voice over his years on radio and used it into much every cartoon he appeared in

Probably the last Kelloggs cereal he'll cover.
I would like to see Grumpy Shelly commercials too.

The turtle and when he first appeared in the commercials talkEd like Jimmy Durante.
And I used to love that cereal 💖

Ten years before I was born.
Arnold Stang, also the voice of Top Cat
You beat me to it, Bruce!

I was 19 years old when this was released
I was 1 year old when this came out. Edible packing peanuts
I did a commercial for Corny snaps doing a race with him and a rabbit :) 1970's, an not find it.
The redesigned Shelly kind of looks like El Kabong from Jellystone
Oh I thought one only thought of that
those pieces of cereal have the same width and shape of packing peanuts
This one got by me. Nice work.
Have you seen Robot Chicken. It doesn’t really ruin my childhood, but it makes me laugh.
I wonder if Jimmy Durante actually did voice Shelly? He was still alive at the time.
Yes! In the First iteration.
On Thursday at a store I saw cereal bole hagers in a apple Jack
I love your videos
Maybe this original personality of Shelly was too similar to Sonny the Cuckoo Bird.
King’s should bring this cereal back
I was the right age for this cereal (8) but I don’t remember it or the commercials. 🤷🏻♂️

Dennis The Menace (1993)
I'm surprised Kellogg's wasn't sued by Hanna-Barbera when they decided to redesign Shelly.
Why would they sue them? Is it because he looked like El Kabong?
