  • Hello everyone! I just wanted to share some of my favorite foraging books since I have had a few people ask for recommendations. I hope you find some use in this information. To be honest I feel like I didn't do these books justice and forgot to mention some of the other things I like about them. If you have any questions feel free to ask!

I was so excited to use the new microphone and ended up using the camera’s audio because the microphone wasn’t even recording 😅 I’m not as tech savvy as I’d like to think! Haha oh well…

😎🌱 All good ☺️ It is great to see that notification saying you have posted, but what is more important is that you are living your life and getting things done. Whatever little portions of that you decide to share... Is a blessing.

The first two seedlings just popped up this week! 😊 I planted about 10 seeds so I’m hoping to see more of them follow 🤞

Those books look great. Going to have to look for something focussed on my area.

Love your channel name! Yes that is definitely important. However, some of these books do cover plants found throughout the U.S. and Europe so they may be helpful too!

A very good book I came across was How I Use Plants in my Everday Life, by Isabell Shippard. She is Australian but she covers a lot of plants you can find here. She doesnt provide much on identifying them but she does detail edible, medicinal uses. Anecdotal accounts of what it does for her or others, and how it has been used historically. A few ideas also on some of them preparing to eat or use as medicine.

Thank you for putting yourself out there! I’m older and have always wanted to study and harvest wild edibles. I’m getting the courage because of people like you. Thank you again. Keep up the good work. Try videoing in more natural light so maybe you want have to contend with the lights. Thank hat would be a deal breaker for me. You did great!!

Thank you! I am glad to hear you are getting more confident when it comes to wild edibles. I absolutely prefer natural lighting but during the day at my house there is no way to film without tons of background noise. I figured I should at least try out the lights but have a lot to learn with them lol. Happy foraging, friend! 😊

Thank you so much for making videos, always informative and lovely. You describe how it is for me also when it comes to people around me that are interested in the things I am so it's nice to connect with like minded here. Those books are awesome! I don't have that last book I will simply have to try and find it second hand, thanks so much for bringing it out and showing. Have a wonderful Spring as well, to you and yours! You are much appreciated!

I'm curious as to whether or not this list has changed at all considering the date of the video, I am a novice in this field, would you recommend anything in specific/anything that I should focus on reading into first, before I go out and injure myself? Any recommended books specific to the Northeast besides the one you mentioned? Also are there any books you prefer for medicinal information/seed storage? I have got "The Forager's Harvest" by Samuel Thayer and "The Herbal Medicine-Maker's Handbook" by James Green on its way currently. Thanks for your time and information!
Ps. How in the world are you able to walk through the forest without get covered in Poison Ivy? I have had severe allergic reactions since I was young.

    • @SmallSeeds

Recently I found a book specific to my state which was an amazing find. I am sure each state has one, so perhaps looking into one for yours would be a good idea. Since you mentioned poison Ivy, knowing the poisonous plants in your area is always a great idea before you go out foraging. . Books that have poisonous look alikes, like the Peterson's Field guide, are great. I also recommend working with the plants you see almost every day first. For example, common garden/lawn weeds like dandelion, chickweed, violets, etc. are always a great place to start. My list hasn't exactly changed since I have been more focused in other areas of interest besides foraging. The books you mentioned seem great! Anything by Samuel Thayer is great for foraging. For medicinal information Rosemary Gladstar books are usually favorites amongst herbalists. Peterson also does a field guide on wild medicinal plants which is great for identification and some uses of the plants. When it comes to a lot of great information the internet has really become my favorite tool. There is TONS of info out there and sometimes it can be hard to sift through, but I enjoy being able to compare and contrast knowledge from different sources.

Usually I try to stay on paths when it comes to avoiding Poison Ivy. I am definitely not immune to it but don't get as severe of a reaction like some of my family members. Washing with soap as soon as possible after a walk is something that I think helps. (especially if I think I walked through some poison ivy) Im usually scanning the ground pretty intensely when foraging too so spotting it and avoiding it is a big one. I hope some of this was helpful!

My all time favorite is "Foraging & Feasting: A Field Guide and Wild Food Cookbook" by Dina Falconi. It hard to find, I paid over $100 with shipping to get the hardcover to Canada. But it's well worth it. My only complaint is it needs a sequel with even more plants.

As much as I love your videos, they become much more of a treat when they are unexpected. Each video seems like a valiant effort, unrushed and high quality. UA-cam can take over your life if you let it. I'm excited for the new direction of your channel. It's a shock all of your books are ones that I don't have. I enjoyed 🙂 your video.
