Played with the Seagull Merlin dulcimer.
Customized by Frank de Haan.
Frank customized the dulcimer with a regular, chromatic scale.
Music composed and performed by Fred Westra
I wish you would do lessons. Its so hard to find anyone who actually teaches.
This is just beautiful
Thank you so much. Maybe in the future teaching online😉
Soothing and meditating tonal pleasure by the dulcimer woodpiece. Orale.
omg I'm trying to learn twinkle little star my new merlin and this dude does this lol. perfect!
Envoûtant et magique. Un gros Wow! Merci!
Thank you so much 🙏
Love the sound. It’s very haunting.
Очень красиво, спасибо огромное, что я смог это послушать
Thank you😊
So beautiful! Thank you.
Incredible music
Thank you very much Sebastian. Greetz from Holland.
Greetz from Germany 😊
You can get a somewhat similar sound on a stock merlin by capoing at the second fret
Great idea!!
@@speeluh I find I can even bend the double string well enough to get a phyrgian dominant sound and play the riff from Malaguena. Actually the reason I pulled the trigger on the merlin in the first place was because someone pointed out to me that with diatonic fretting the capo would change the mode. You also have lydian in open position by playing on the inner string.
Absolutely outstanding!
Thank you
...very beautiful Fred, wow!
Beautiful. Inspiring!
Thank you so much! 🙏🙏
Wonderful spell weaving here my friend...!!!!!!
Wow! This is amazing music. Well done!
Great music , and a verry nice sound ;-)
awesome music . im a fan from the 🇵🇭 philippines .,, its a similar music here with our old tribe people
Thank you for your comment.
Wow
Thank you 🙏🕉️
I was on the fence about getting one. Watched this video and ordered mine right after.
Good to hear the instrument inspires you. This one is customized with a chromatic neck. Have fun with your new dulcimer
The one you get from the store will not be able to play these notes with fretboard modification.
Mooi
Great!!!
Excelent 👍
At first when I read the about I was like why add those frets? Seems against the spirit of the design, but I was wrong, this little thing has a great tone and with the articulation you’ve added I see that now, I hope seagull are taking notes.
I wish they made ones like this, I want that Turkish oud type sound without shelling out a few grand
Which tuning are you using? Sounds awesome! Thanks :-)
I believe it’s C B C C
Cool! I've been thinking of getting mine chromatic as well.
Well: make it chromatic. More fun!
@@speeluh I will once I get some money to have it done haha
❤️
It has a voice like Türkmen (Azerbaycan) Tar
Can you recommend me any musicians who play this instrument? Thanks!
So everyone knows, you can't play this on your stock Merlin Seagull. This instruments is modified with added frets, essentially making it a guitar.
Ooh, that's sneaky. Thanks! I hadn't noticed and it had me on the verge of placing an order.
@@toadstooltarot yeah me 2
@@toadstooltarot I mean, still consider it. Check out some of the other Seagull Merlin videos. The instrument still has much to speak for it. You just can't do this out of the box.
Useful! Just bought one and have already found some missing semitones irritating. This makes me consider getting it refretted...I like the sound of the instrument, amazing for the price.
More like a ukulele than a guitar…
That is beautiful
Thank you very much Sarah. 😊
One wishes that the seagull merlin was like this but it is not it is tuned in open D and does not have those frets on it and very few have a pick-up in them to make that amplified sound, having said that this is still an awesome sound.
Your Seagull Merlin is chromatic
That's correct. I let it customize to a chromatic scale. I got bored just playing major😉
@@speeluh it's a pity I'm so far. I'd like to have some classes from you.
Did you do this modification yourself or done by the company? Very nice sound.
This modification was done by guitar builder Frank de Haan in the Netherlands.
@@speeluh hoeveel kostte je dat? Het klinkt fantastisch!
@@merijn9602 hoi Merijn, ik dacht dat dat rond de €60,- kostte
Is it just the modification, or how do you get the almost close sitar sound? How did you tune the strings?
Normally the Seagul sounds more like a banjo.
@@ambiencekeys5100 . C#3 G#3 C#4 C#4. Fifth and octave. It can be heard in 3:32.

Moooooooooooore
Thank you! Maybe coming months something new😉
Which country is this sound from?
Thank you for your question. The instrument is derived from the Irish dulcimer and played with an Arabic vibe. 😉
Where did you get this type of dulcimer? thanks!
Good ol' phrygian dominant. Also, what mic are you using for this?
Thank you. Well....i can't remember. 2 x AKG C414 or 2 x Neumann KM184.
I’d love to know the spacings for each extra fret you added. Should I just add some in the middle of the ones already there?
I don't know the exact measurements where to place the frets. Someone else did this for me.
Is there a way I could have your same guy modify mine? Send it to him and pay for it?
I think it's much cheaper for you to find a guitar customizer/builder in your own town. I live in the Netherlands. Frank de Haan customized it for me.
@@speeluh okay yeah I just saw that, thanks for reply:)
@@jerredchouseman, you can listen to the track Akasha on Spotify if you like. It's recorded with the dulcimer. Let me know what you think😉.

Very nice indeed may I ask how you have your Merlin tuned?
Nope lol
When this dulcimer was customized, did the scale length have to be changed, or was it just a case of adding extra frets? I ask because I have a nice diatonic dulcimer that I would love to convert to chromatic.
Hi Sam, just adding extra frets. 😉
@@speeluh Cool! Thank you. :)
Hi, What are the tunes? much appreciated if you can tell us. Thanks.
Thank you. I think it's d-a-d or c-g-c
@@speeluh thanks a Lot. 👍😀And thanks for your great music.
What tuning is this in?
C#-G#-C#
what is ur tuning ?
Hello Robin, DAD or CGC. Greetz from Holland.
12 frets.. not really a dulcimer anymore
A dulcimer in disguise😂
@@speeluh I only noticed cus I couldnt play it on my m4 in g
But I was inspired
