  • I have been experimenting and found that you can cut fabric with the Spellbinders Nestablities
    and the Sizzix Big Shot. In this video I demonstrate how easy the Big Shot cuts fabric for my applique designs.

    I just wanted to give a few tips to help you out when using the Spellbinders, or thin dies with your Big Shot and fabric. i never using any type of fusing or webbing because i don't sew. However if you use your dies and fabric just like you demonstrate but add 2-4 sheets of card stock on top of the top plate it will cut all the way through ur fabric so you don't have to do the extra cutting. The card stock acts as a shim and presses down just a tad further to go all the way through the fabric.

    Adding a new dimension to an old card making idea I've used in the past before these dies came out. Cutting shapes and ironing them on to greeting cards!!! I'm never see, was never good at it, but I have used the appliqué idea for making my cards, and now with the die cutting ability it makes it even better and re-inspires me!!! Thank you!! Very interesting!!!!

    Thank you for this 'hand holding' video! I am working on a Christmas gift that needs some tiny letters cut and was really hoping to use my Big Shot. And here is your video showing just how to do it. Thank you so much!

    I know with the Thinlet dies the instructions have the fabric on the platform side and the die placed cutting side down, then the plate on top so there is more resistance against the cutting edge. You might get a more complete cut that way. Thank you so much for this video as I have wanted to try exactly this!! (An option for those who want to do customized cuts: get a ScanNCut!! It's an investment for sure but if you can draw it, you can scan in your drawing, then cut it out of paper or fabric.)

    I usually put the fabric against the blade of the die. It gives a cleaner cut, specially when using thinner dies.

    Cool! I have bought one of these nestabilities from Spellbinders but they did not work with fabric. I had not heat and bond. I prefer the big boxes from sizzix.

    I learned a lot. I tried cutting fabric without the heat-n-bond and with only thin dies; it wouldn't cut through the entire fabric. I will try your way instead!

      I find that the heat-n-bond really helps. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment:)

    Hello...I am assuming that the Heat n Bond, once it's ironed onto the fabric, helps to keep those fabric edges together, bonded sort of, so that they do not "fray" after you sew them on to a shirt or whatever other fabric with a straight stitch? Also...what are the best non-fraying fabrics to use for these types of cut and sew projects? Thanks so much!

    Hi, No unfortunately you can not cutomize your own templates. I get my dies from sizzix. They have a large selection. You need the Bigz style to work with the Big Shot. Thanks

    You really need to use a zig zag stich to avoid fraying when using lite Heat n Bond. I personally find it very difficult to sew around die cut forms like butterflies and such, but I've only done a few projects...I suppose practice makes perfect. The only non-fraying fabrics that I can think of are good quality felt and maybe fleece.

    Hello I recently started using heat n bond. I was wondering if there is a good way to store scraps that already have the white backing removed.

    • @christinadaily6072
      @christinadaily6072 9 років тому

      Parchment paper folders work, or save the backing that you pull off of the 9x12 sheets when applying to a whole piece of fabric and save between.

    Hi Julia, which sizzix machine would you recommend for a beginner machine for cutting fabric. I make bags and purses. I would like to be able to cut squares and various other objects? Thanks

      Hi Sally, I love the basic Sizzix BigShot. Here is an Amazon link- amzn.to/2PJlwLn, but you can find them at Joann's and can usually use a coupon. I have had mine for 8-9 years and use it almost daily. You also may want to sign up for the Sizzix newsletter. They run good sales on their Bigz dies often. I've gotten clearance dies on their after Thanksgiving Sale for $3 each. The Bigz dies are the ones that can cut up to 4 layers of fabric and once. Such an easy machine to use!

    Hi Since the cut didn't go all the way through, would it be helpful to run it back through a 2nd or 3rd time... just back and forth without removing it... to get it to cut all the way through? I have to do this sometimes when cutting papers with mine.

    • @stitchesbyjulia
      @stitchesbyjulia  8 років тому

      +Ellen Hofer Most of the time, I've had good luck with "rolling" it backwards. I have had problems with it moving a bit and then the cut is off. Thanks for watching!

    Do you need to sew over the edges of the fabric to keep them from fraying?

    • @stitchesbyjulia
      @stitchesbyjulia  7 років тому +1

      Hi, It depends on the look you are going for. I do mostly raw edge free-motion appliqué. Here's a recent video demonstrating the technique-ua-cam.com/video/r8ro-w7KlXE/v-deo.html
      You can also edge the pieces with a close, narrow zig-zag or an appliqué stitch to help prevent fraying. Hope this helps! Julia

    • @PifsGifts
      @PifsGifts 7 років тому

      stitchesbyjulia thank you. I've been trying to learn to sew for years. It's very difficult for me because I'm legally blind.
      I think my machine can do the free motion too. I'll be giving it a try soon.
      Thanks again!

      +stitchesbyjulia Thank you for your reply! I'm going to look for it. I haven't seen something like that here but I'm sure there is something to replace it. I tried to cut circles of fabric and it didn't cut anything. It just left a mark.

    How do I have a die cut made
    I am with a group called Days for Girls International .
    We make Pads for the girls .Because they don`t have these so we make them and after use they wash them .
    But the cutting takes a lot of time .
    So if I could have a die cut made it would help any ideals

      Go to sizzix.com/customdies. The company will make dies from your design and it looks as though they offer quite a bit of help in designing it. no idea what it costs. best of luck.

    Why would you use that thing if you have to cut around the whole thing after you're done with it

    • @stitchesbyjulia
      @stitchesbyjulia  2 роки тому

      Rarely do you have to cut around it once it's been through the BigShot. With the Bigz dies, you can cut up to 4 layers at a time. A great time saver for quilters, etc. This has also save my arms from carpel tunnel. Sometimes you do have to give it a little help with a scissors, especially with thicker fabrics or if your die is dull.
