Yoooooo! You helped fix my ´98 Honda mower. Choke was stuck wide open. Dinked it shut, drained out the carburetor then tried to start it and it started! Mowed my yard, the neighbours yards too. Probably mow some more yards tomorrow. Thanks
Re. starter fluid , here in Australia ( not sure if it's elsewhere ) we have a product made by Nulon called "Start Ya Bastard" , basically an ether based aerosol . It's an expression muttered by many of us after pulling on that starter cord a number of times , now you can say it loud while reaching for the can :-)
@@bobmcl2406 I'd send you a tin of it if I could Bob but being highly flammable is a banned item to post . Maybe you could print a label and stick it on a can of a similar product , just for the laugh . Good health to you , all the best from Australia :-)
OMG I love you!!! I've been banging my head against the wall! I've got the same mower with this exact problem and you have provided the only answer that worked! Thank you!
You will eventually see it. My suspicion is the the mower is being pushed rather forcibly underneath shrubbery that has been heavily pruned at the base and the sticks are pushing the brackets to the rear. Form both sides back forward in to parallel and trimming the extra plastic off will probably allow for more customers to keep cramming their machines under bushes and not replicating the same problem.
Excellent video! At 4:40 minutes into the video, there are 2 screws from the bracket on the right side going into the carb. There is a an 1/8 - 1/4" gap between those two parts. IMHO, if you tightened those two screws, it would shift the carb to the right and you would not have to trim the plastic arm of the choke. Please let me know if you agree with this opinion!
Thanks Don for another great video. Even a mechanical dummy like me can understand your fix. I did exactly as you said and I have a lean mower again. Thanks.
I do this the same way! I’ve switched to flush trim side cutters that I use for electronics to get in there easier and trim it flush with the upright portion of the choke lever.
DonyBoy I'm currently working on a Craftsman mower with the same engine and starting problem. First thing tomorrow I'll be checking that same problem and fix. Wish me luck. Many thanks
Dony you should do a video with those junk plastic briggs carbs explain why the mower sputters and won't run and what you do to correct it. thanks for the great videos
I think with the newer version of the plastic Briggs & Stratton style of carbs the factory fixed the flaw by cutting a rectangular shape hole into the metal side plate so that the choke lever won't rub against it....
Wow! That was a great tip...especially since the butterfly could pop back once the air cleaner and cover get jiggled around. Could lead to massive frustration at diagnosing! I also noticed the great idea of color coding your nut drivers with different color tape so it's easy to grab the right one. Nice!
Thank you Briggs and stratton for this plastic carb hahaha on the other hand thank you Donnie for showing how to fix the issue with this plastic carb be safe out there Young Man and your family
... had the same problem with my Toro 20370, would not start without starting fluid. Turns out the valve lash on the exhaust was too tight. The rocker stud was loose. Snugged it up, set lash and now it starts first time again.
I sprayed DW 40 into the filter because my neighbor said it would work since I didn't have fluid. Now the engine starts to smoke, but it's white smoke so I'm not sure if it's burning out the dw40
Great video Don! Seems like that is a flaw in the overall engineering of the top of the choke and the support bracket. I could see that driving a homeowner nuts, especially if the choke snaps back in place upon investigation. Thanks so much for sharing this. Great detail and explanation!
I am having the same problem with a mower that doesn't have auto choke. I have replaced the carb but still cant get it to start without fluid. Any recommendations?
Wow, Briggs recommends that you never change the oil on the sticker at 7:32. This company has really fallen. I'll stick with my 1994 Briggs where I do change the oil each spring.
Great vids thank you. The husky I'm working on needs carb cleaning. The carb is really unusual is it a diaphragm carb? Do you have a video on cleaning this anomaly?
I have a lawn mower motor on my log splitter with the same issue it is a Honda Easy Start. does not want to start when cold or even just warm with out the starter fluid Do you think this is the same problem in this motor....???
idk if this is my problem ive come across a somewhat similar problem with 2 toro lawnmowers that they'll only start if you spray teh filter with carb cleaner then once you do that it starts right up...but if the mower sits for an hr or so it'll do the same thing..idk why that is...im having the same problem with this weed eater i bought it will run but then dies after a 30 second run for whatever reason and it also starts when sprayed with carb cleaner into the sponge...why are these things doing this?
I sprayed carb cleaner and starting fluid . Soon as i tried starting it started up then it bogged down. I started it up again soon as it started bogging down again i sprayed starting fluid then it caught on fire. Why is that ?
I've a strange situation. My 17 hp Briggs twin's oil will show 4 inches over full when it's cold. But I fill it to the full mark and it shows full when it's hot. I can't figure out what's pushing the oil up the fill tube. Everything else works just fine. Any ideas?
Hey Donny I have the same husqvarna I bought it used the owner claimed it was only used for 2 cuts, I replaced the spark plug, and the carburetor but it won’t start any suggestions guys?
pull out the choke stem while you are there and replace the foam with two orings. those plastic carbs all leak to much air through that stupid design. i run a Husqvarna and Briggs dealer and have done tonns of them, they come in hunting for fuel because of that leak, i have hounded Briggs and stratton about this issue but they don't want anything to do with, just like the single cylinder intek 19.5hp engine that is failing camshafts because of the decompressor flyweight breaking off after 200hrs use, i done one last week and had another customer in today complaining of starting problems.Ive also had various 700 series engines (non cast iron sleeve) pick up on the bore for no apparent reason and also a few with rod knock after 2.5 years. Briggs 750 i have not one issue with that engine.
Ahhh, I wish. I have a Briggs powered mower, ran three times and put it away. Now it won’t start without starter fluid, but this isn’t the culprit either. I think the fix is to find a 10-15 year old used one and buy it. All of this “no maintenance” stuff is absolute junk.
Not a Briggs. A Kohler. I hate all those auto choke/auto throttle crazy systems. Well he said twice Briggs and he should now so maybe it is, but i got a husqvarna that looks exactly same with a Kohler. Yeap. It was Briggs. I shouldn't doubt Donny. Lol
Great video Don! All these Auto-Choke carbs seem to be more trouble than they’re worth. What happened to the old reliable manual choke cables and primer bulbs? haha.
Oh so true. What was shown in this video was not the only thing that can go wrong with them, not by a long shot. And all because people are too lazy to press a primer button or pull a choke lever.
Lol We have been spraying starting fluid in ours for three years After cleaning the carb I gave up I should have kept my Briggs & Stratton from the 1980s
Exact issue with a friend of mine's mower. No reason to think it was a dirty carb. She said she ran it dry. Your explanation makes perfect sense. Thank you.
AFTER WATCHING YOUR VIDEO, I AM ANXIOUS TO CHECK OUT THE BRIGGS & STRATTON ENGINE ON MY TROY BILT TB110. SAME SYMPTOM, ONLY STARTS WITH ETHER. IT WILL LIKELY HAVE THE STUCK CHOKE ISSUE. THANKS FOR YOUR EXCELLENT VIDEO.👍

actually, I need help with a Briggs 6.75 auto choke.
Yoooooo! You helped fix my ´98 Honda mower.
Choke was stuck wide open. Dinked it shut, drained out the carburetor then tried to start it and it started! Mowed my yard, the neighbours yards too. Probably mow some more yards tomorrow. Thanks
Thank you so much. I would have never thought of that as the culprit. You’re the master.
it had me stumped a few times though!
Re. starter fluid , here in Australia ( not sure if it's elsewhere ) we have a product made by Nulon called "Start Ya Bastard" , basically an ether based aerosol . haha, I tried to find it here but nowhere to be found in Canada
I would buy a can of that just to have it on my shelf! Thanks for a good laugh. Cheers from Canada.

Designers call that "lets make a problem for the owner's"
My commercial mower is doing the same thing, I was getting ready to buy a carburetor, I'm going to try this first. Thanks.
Good luck!
OMG I love you!!! I've been banging my head against the wall! I've got the same mower with this exact problem and you have provided the only answer that worked! Thank you!
I pickup something on every one of your videos. Thanks 👍🏻
Yes I've found that too. When the cover is off it dosen't catch but with it on it does. I used a file to shorten the plastic tab.
Great tip Dony. I haven't had anyone bring me this problem yet, but now it is on my list of possibilities. Thanks for the info you share!
Great video! I say the same thing ever time I take the carb bracket off "why did they make these screw heads different sizes".
My lawnmower has been doing that for over twenty years. Now I can fix it.
You found my problem. Thanks Dony. Keep the good work
Thanks Don for another great video. Even a mechanical dummy like me can understand your fix. I did exactly as you said and I have a lean mower again. Thanks.
This has happened once too me , been so long had forgot about it . Great reminder - thanks
Thanks. Especially true with a brand new carburetor !!!
I do this the same way! I’ve switched to flush trim side cutters that I use for electronics to get in there easier and trim it flush with the upright portion of the choke lever.
Priceless Tip Dony. Thanks.
Thank you.... never would have thought of that.
Great video that is sure to save people time, money and aggravation. Well done 👍👍👍😁😁😁

I will
Haven’t even gone outside to try this yet and already know that’s the issue lol. Thank you sir!
You should have your own Tv Show I love learning how to fix Lawn Mowers and Snow Blowers from watching your videos..
Thank you so much, sir! You just helped me fix a mower I got cheap!
This just worked for me on my sons Husqvarna, thanks!
Very helpfull video Dony, thanks again👍
I think with the newer version of the plastic Briggs & Stratton style of carbs the factory fixed the flaw by cutting a rectangular shape hole into the metal side plate so that the choke lever won't rub against it....
Great tip again! Thanks Dony!
Very interesting, thanks!
Hi Don. You're just the best 👍. Sincerely, Lars from Denmark.
Stuck choke Don 😀😀 have an awesome weekend & thanks 🙏 for your post bud 😀😀
you too!
Thanks. Hopefully that'll fix mine because I'm bout ready to suplex it!
Amazing as always
Thanks, Don good info.
Great video! Another one for the tool box.
have a good weekend
Thank you for the video. It was very helpful in diagnosing the same issue I was having. It seems that most of my starting issues are with B&S engines.
Great video Don 👍
I have the same issue with my 27 HP simplicity Broadmoor. I hope this helps. Thanks.
Wow! That was a great tip...especially since the butterfly could pop back once the air cleaner and cover get jiggled around. Could lead to massive frustration at diagnosing! I also noticed the great idea of color coding your nut drivers with different color tape so it's easy to grab the right one. Nice!
this repair had me stumped in the past!
Thank you
Nice Job 👍
Thanks I have the same mower with the same problem only starts with carb cleaner.👍
Awesome!! That's probably my problem. Also, great video and audio.
Same issue here. My is awd.
For the first start must used gas. But for after that on off all day no problem
I have the same issue on briggs and stratton. I have to grab the other lever going into the engine to run.
I will have to check that.
Great info Donny. Ace vid
Don, You are a genius, keep it up man,👍.
Great video!
Thank you Briggs and stratton for this plastic carb hahaha on the other hand thank you Donnie for showing how to fix the issue with this plastic carb be safe out there Young Man and your family
Thank you!
You were a huge help. Thank you
Excellent video, thanks again
Good tip.
These brackets also get bent by shoving mower under bushes an hedges!
Thank you! My problem solved!
You’re the man...
... had the same problem with my Toro 20370, would not start without starting fluid. Turns out the valve lash on the exhaust was too tight. The rocker stud was loose. Snugged it up, set lash and now it starts first time again.
If memory serves me, you made a video like this before with the choke not closing during startup?
yes I did with a different auto-choke system
Thanks........good info......
Husqvarna's walk behind string trimmer has the same Briggs engine/carb set up.
I sprayed DW 40 into the filter because my neighbor said it would work since I didn't have fluid. Now the engine starts to smoke, but it's white smoke so I'm not sure if it's burning out the dw40

Have a cub cadet mower with a Honda 159cc starts and runs if I spray some gas in it, if I shut it off it won’t start unless I spray it again
I have the same thing on symptoms except the core works fine. What's the next thing?
Wow, Briggs recommends that you never change the oil on the sticker at 7:32. This company has really fallen. I'll stick with my 1994 Briggs where I do change the oil each spring.
What a poor design. Thanks for showing us this issue and solution!
You the man.👍👍
Great vids thank you.
What if it starts with fluid, or pumping the primer, but won't stay running? Those without chokes.
Gold!
Very Very nice!!!!!
I just put a new carburetor on my lawn mower starts with starter fluid but won't keep running
idk if this is my problem ive come across a somewhat similar problem with 2 toro lawnmowers that they'll only start if you spray teh filter with carb cleaner then once you do that it starts right up...but if the mower sits for an hr or so it'll do the same thing..idk why that is...im having the same problem with this weed eater i bought it will run but then dies after a 30 second run for whatever reason and it also starts when sprayed with carb cleaner into the sponge...why are these things doing this?

my choke will not open up to start. I use starting fluid and it will run all day.
Hey Donny I have the same husqvarna I bought it used the owner claimed it was only used for 2 cuts, I replaced the spark plug, and the carburetor but it won’t start any suggestions guys?
check for spark
How can they do a Basic design mistake
pull out the choke stem while you are there and replace the foam with two orings. those plastic carbs all leak to much air through that stupid design. i run a Husqvarna and Briggs dealer and have done tonns of them, they come in hunting for fuel because of that leak, i have hounded Briggs and stratton about this issue but they don't want anything to do with, just like the single cylinder intek 19.5hp engine that is failing camshafts because of the decompressor flyweight breaking off after 200hrs use, i done one last week and had another customer in today complaining of starting problems.Ive also had various 700 series engines (non cast iron sleeve) pick up on the bore for no apparent reason and also a few with rod knock after 2.5 years. Mine starts with starting fluid, then dies -It blows a lot of smoke too. It has a new carb, new air filter and new spark plug…🤷🏻♀️

I see the problem. It’s a Husqvarna 😉
spraying starting fluid does not always work, if you have spark, especially on 2 cycle engines. It could be flooded!Too much fuel.
So porfekt
This is probably partly caused by mowing around something like a trailer and bumping into it.
actually no it isn't, it's just the way it is designed that causes this problem
Watching on 2x is so much better
Not a Briggs. A Kohler. I hate all those auto choke/auto throttle crazy systems.
