- Ajahn Kevali kindly offered to lead one day of practice with Precepts and Meditation at Dhammagiri Forest Hermitage, Brisbane. At the final session he opens up to any questions or issues participants may have encountered.
Ajahn Kevali tells us the story of Ven Cūla Panthaka:
Although Ven Panthaka was later declared by the Buddha as one of his foremost disciples, he initially really struggled as a monk. He even found it too difficult to memorize any of the Buddha's teachings.
However, the Buddha gave him a suitably simple meditation object, and applying himself wholeheartedly to it, Ven Cūla Panthaka developed 'bhāvanā-mayā-paññā' ('wisdom based on meditation') that transcended mere intellectual reasoning, and he attained full awakening together with outstanding phsycic powers.
This story shows us that intellectual knowledge is something very different from experiential insight and realization of the Dhamma. We have to be aware that 'Saññā' (perception, memory, concepts) is not yet real 'Paññā' (experiential wisdom based on meditation). We can't be satisfied only to know on the level of intellect and concepts. We have to continue to deepen our understanding, going beyond wisdom based on hearing, listening and thinking, and develop wisdom based on experiential realization of the Dhamma.
Ajahn Kevali has been the abbot of Wat Pah Nanachat (Ajahn Chah's monastery for foreign monks) since 2008.
