I see PSA 10s on eBay all the time with easily visible flaws that don’t even require close inspection. Their actual grading procedures and standards do not match their claimed procedures and standards. They are committing mass fraud. Combined with upcoming issues with Chinese frauds of high dollar cards and box scanning, the investment part of the hobby has been suffering from cancer for decades and it’s finally time for hospice. Get ready for full scale price collapse.

That wouldn’t make sense since PSA would make more money by giving 10’s and up charging them. Anytime card gets low grade, you really need to look at the edges and surface under micro scope / magnifying glasses with lights at different angles.

Lol sorry about the reveal. I'd warn everyone not to send thier junk wax to PSA. See too many reveals of ultra modern stuff off center, or scratches getting 10s. Junk wax? Has to be the most pristine card imaginable, even then it's probably a 9. They don't want to grade junk wax anymore, this is how they are telling everyone. It will never get graded fairly at PSA, don't bother.

without seeing the backs, we can't really assess the grades...I would guess if you look over the cards really carefully, front and back, under really good lighting and high magnification, you will see dinged corners, whiting on the back edges, etc...backs are usually where issues are that people don't see when subbing their cards...getting 10s on cards from the 80s and 90s is not easy no matter which grading company you use

The 6s and 7s that I saw looked to have cards with dinged corners and edge issues. Otherwise, if they look great and still get a 6-7 it's usually a surface issue. Invest in a 10x loupe. I've broken hundreds of junk wax boxes to grade Hall of famers and I'm usually lucky to get more than three that are 10 worthy per box. Some boxes literally go from the pack to recycling

I can’t tell the difference between a 9 and a 10 really but I’ve sent in maybe 20 cards….one 8, 4-5 9’s and the rest 10s. There are a lot of cards I just don’t send in because of obvious issues.

In my opinion PSA can no longer be trusted. They don’t grade on the card alone, which is unacceptable. When you can’t make any sense of the grading, it’s a problem. I’ve switched grading back to BSG, and couldn’t be happier. When I send a card that I would grade an 8, it comes back as an 8. When I send a card that I think is a gem, it comes back a 10, or maybe a 9. No surprises

I have yet to get cards graded but I have graded a bunch of comics. Some rules that I use that may help:
    1. Submit cards that are equal grade together. Don’t submit cards you think are 8s with others you think are 10s. Humans are grading these and if you get a couple 7s you set an expectation. Once this happens don’t expect to get the extra bump from 9 to 10
    2. Grading companies do not want to skew the pop. So I wouldn’t submit multiples of the same card or too many of the same player in a submission, especially GOATs like Jordan.
    3. Be more critical of condition especially centering. Use a magnifier of some sort. Either a glass or your phone.
    Best of luck

Are you checking with a magnifying glass, the corners, front and back? And back surface and centering ? Edges . I keep hearing you talk about centering and it’s a lot more than that and you can save yourself some cash buy really
Looking over the card correctly and wiping down any fingerprints or smudging . Good luck on your next sub . I had a hard time my first 2 submissions now I only get 10s and 9s because I know what to look for . The sharpest corner with the naked eye could really look messed up under a good magnifying glass. I use the magnify glass that PSA USES AND THAT HAS BEEN A GAME CHANGER . And not touching the cards with your bare hands and if you do you need to wipe them down and there is lots of videos that can teach you things but I believe you need to watch as many videos as possible because not everybody has all the answers and I believe after doing this for two years now I’m a pro at knowing if it will hit a 10 . But not going to lie PSA SOMETIMES DOES POP Control because I have cracked 9s and sent them back in and got 10s . Like I’ll crack 4 9s of the same card and 2 will come back as a 10 and 2 will come back as 9s crazy .I know this is 9 months old and wondering if you have figured it out already?

89 MJ All Star is a 5.9 to 6, if you look at the bottom left a slight bend before the corner. I would grade it under a 6 but, who am I, right? I checked out over 600 thousand sports cards that were sent to me by collectors to get my opinion before being sent in to PSA. I'm not boosting about it but out of 600 thousand cards I gave opinion on, 597 thousands came back exactly how PSA grading came back. It has nothing to do with junk cards or where they came from rather, it's the stock of the paper, fingerprints left on the card by collectors, centering of focused picture in the middle, bordering equal sides, print on the reverse of card is a big deal breaker ----> I have brand new 2024 Topps Heritage and, series 2 cards that are somewhat unreadable or a few letters being off set print, I pulled these out of bought jumbo, hobby, monster boxes directly bought from Topps and, I used gloves to keep my finger prints off them, guess what? I have a super hard find Elly rookie card autographed foil board I thought was a 5, graded by PSA and got a 6.5, got more better but, close to expectations though. The new Topps 2024 Heritage are worse because some print cannot be read, pretty awful considering brand new cards, some rares but, won't ever grade above a 3 by PSA so, it makes no difference where you get cards. I think sending it in a different grading company will not change as much as you might think? Again, any grader is going to use a magnify glass looking for fingerprints and, the reverse print on a card makes a difference. It's not our fault when a big card maker like Topps has unreadable print but, need to understand the grading company grading cards because who wants a card that cannot be read on the reverse side?

@@generationhoops1307 yes, that is a good thing. The grading system can vary but, overall it's usually 1 to 2 points difference. Let me ask you something.....How is the lettering on the reverse side of the card, also get a good magnify glass and, look for fingerprints on the front and, reverse? I have over 1,500 Heritage 2024 baseball cards bought directly from Topps, no finger prints because I used gloves however, the reverse print on these are awful, not my fault. How would you feel you bought 1 of these from me, PSA grade 10 but, you try to read the print even with a magnify glass and can't quite read the print? This to me is not a very collectible card, right? This is why I quit buying from Topps, voiced my complaints but, Topps never admitted to help me or even offered a suggestion, most companies would have sent a replacement for my purchase, right? I agree Jordan cards are judge very harshly, in particular today because these Jordan cards are on the higher end market value now. As you said cannot really be upset but, we can all learn something from one another, as a hobbyist that collected baseball cards since the 1960 era to today I'm 62 now. The one difference I always said: it's more exciting to watch a good basketball game than it is to watch a good baseball game, my card collecting will always be baseball though.👍👍👍

As somebody who sent in hundreds upon hundreds of older cards prior to the pandemic and as somebody who interviewed to be a card grader at PSA and worked in their dungeon for 3 Days grading cards, I would say that you discount corner wear WAY too much. You had a couple cards that that got 6'S that I agree one 6 that I called out as a 5 so you got a generous grade on that. You also need to look for print imperfections like dots or snow. If there's one tiny print dot on the front or the back you will not get a 10. You should zoom in on the corners more closely. Cards with borders that aren't White also grade lower because you can see chipping on the edges more readily. Add a tiny touch of wear on the corner of a non-white bordered card shows up and stands out.

The one thing that PSA doesn't do is contact you about a card that is being returned/ or to change the grading preference. Hope your listening PSA - this wastes time in returning a card and then resubmitting it to grade. CGC is a good grading CO to deal with.

This is the reason why I stopped sending in my 90's basketball cards. You can tell this from my channel. Once they lower their prices to $10, then I would consider but at this current rate is not worth to get grades lower then a 9 with this particular era. Remember eye appeal is not the only thing but of these guess are using magnifiers and taking the account the back plays a factor. Surfaces need to be inspected and some what cleaned. That goes for any card.

Before sending old wax in they must be cleaned and searched for surface scratches, they are using new machines and lighting so they detect more surface problems than 5 years ago, much tougher to grade with todays standards.

The hard part with junk wax is the basic matte finish on the front. You need to hold that card at every angle possible looking for minor surface scratches, I'm talking tiny. They'll find them so do your homework before submitting junk wax of any kind.

I can see the slightly off centered cards that you are calling centered. I'm generally a mid-60's to 1991 collector. 80% of the junk wax era cards you revealed, I would not have even sent it. Get stricter on your centering (50/50) for what you will submit and don't forget north/south centering counts too. perhaps pick up a cheap plastic card centering tool that you lay on top to measure.

I'd say PSA grades pre-2000 more harshly than they do ultra modern stuff, particularly centering. When you're getting back 6s, there's a surface issue. On that 1989 Hoops All-Star Jordan, I thought I saw a horizontal fingernail mark on the front left, but it's hard to say because you didn't show the card on camera long enough to evaluate it.
The two 1991 Hoops Jordans were off center left to right (fat on the left) and there is a fisheye (small circular print defect) in the bottom right of the red, white, blue banner at the top of the card where it says Jordan's name and 1992 USA Basketball Team.
The 1990 Hoops Jordan is off center top to bottom by a lot. Also, there's a red fisheye near his head.
The two 1990 Skybox Jordans were off center. The first one you showed (an 8) also had a white corner (top left).
Junk wax is my favorite stuff to open and grade.

Totally agree with Frosty Feet Cards comment below. Grading standards apply to both front and back of cards. Can't comment on these grades without seeing the back of the card and looking at the card with a magnify lens. Corners, edges (chipping), centering, surface (scratches, print lines, print errors), card focus (is it out of register), vivid color (damage by UV), all play into a cards grade. Hard to see problems with cards that have white borders unless you use an eye piece or magnify lens to examine the corners and edges. Most problems with cards are not viewable with the naked eye. PSA grades your cards looking at the card under magnification and that is what you need to do to understand the grade assigned to your cards. People need to stop whining and complaining about the grades assigned to your reveals and start looking at the grades (under magnification) from the same perspective as the card graders. That unfortunately is where most of the disconnect is in this hobby. Once you learn to look for the same things the card graders look for under magnification you can filter your submissions and start to get much better results on your reveals. I am speaking in general and there are always exceptions that can be addressed or discussed with PSA if you feel your card was mis-graded. For the most part PSA does a good job at assessing and assigning grades. That is why cards in a PSA holder in general sell at a premium.

Why sent in cards that are that off center? Really a waste of money if doing it for investment purposes. Also it takes alot more than centering to get a 10. I go over my cards countless times with a printers loope and pull 10s on a consistant basis reguardless of who the player is.

  • @frostyfeetcards

From my experience with PSA I think pop control is an urban legend. With all due respect those cards are much more condition sensitive is why the grading seems harsh. There's no gloss and surface imperfections are common in the older fleer. Kobe's specifically the Fleer and Fleer Ultra are incredibly difficult to find raw that will be in 10s because of the black backgrounds. Also check the backs of the cards as they tell an entirely different story to the whole card. My opinion is too carefully examine your 6's, 7's and 8's to start understanding the flaw threshold of each grade. It'll get better each time you do. I wish you the best and I know it can be frustrating but keep studying. Cheers!

@jeffh4644 And you can keep feeling that way. Conspiracy theories on low end sports cards is right up there with UFO's imo. But to each their own. My channel showcases flaws in cards for folks to try and get a clearer understanding on why their cards might have graded the way they have. then again, it's just my opinion. It doesn't make it fact.
