Its the classic blackout while alone with no usable light source in hand. Humans are just used to the light that sudden darkness will trigger either a cower or a flight response, unless trained for it. You will be brave if you have a light source in hand. Also i think that Ao has her setup similar to Suisei's old setup, in the living room.
I don't think that really applies to the vast majority here; turning back as the game rules dictate doesn't count as an instinctual "flight" response. Besides, they weren't alone; they had their friendly neighborhood salaryman there accompanying them.

And that's why I EDC a torch. No reason nowadays to not have at least a little keychain light the size of a pinky finger. Those illuminate a ton in blackout conditions, even on the lowest modes.

It's always fascinating to me that even though humans are curious in nature, we always fear the unknown. We love the unknown if we know (or have an idea) what's beyond our perception. But fear it if all we can see is nothing but utter darkness.
It's only reinforced by the difference in the effect of darkness in a known environment vs an unknown one. If you're in a murky unknown environment, or a familiar one where things are not normal, it's scary; in a known environment and circumstance, it's comforting. Having control over that may be why having a flashlight or lantern has that "safety blanket" effect even when you're not using it.
