  • Sega Channel was an online game service developed by Sega for the Genesis video game console, serving as a content delivery system. Launching in December 1994, Sega Channel was provided to the public by TCI and Time Warner Cable through cable television services by way of coaxial cable. It was a pay to play service, through which customers could access Genesis games online, play game demos, and get cheat codes. Lasting until July 31, 1998, Sega Channel operated three years after the release of Sega's next generation console, the Sega Saturn. Though criticized for its poorly timed launch and high subscription fee, Sega Channel has been praised for its innovations in downloadable content and impact on online services for video games.

I had Sega Channel and it was awesome. Just to clarify the majority of the games available were full untimed games however you couldn't save anything that required battery backup. They had a specific section for the demos called Test drives

Pretty insane that this was essentially a sega gamepass in the 90s. Thanks for the awesome quality video it definitely deserves more exposure!

I had this during my high-school years. I remember begging my mom for itnand even got a small job to pay the 15 a month. It was a killer service and my friends would always come over to play. I shared a bedroom with my 10 months younger brother and it would drive him mad when I'd get up at 1 am on the first of.every month, to log on and see the new games. Great memories!

Fun Fact: there are currently 2 games as of now that were streamed in the Sega Channel that never got a physical release, and thus being lost content.
1: The Flintstones (movie): An original platformer based on the movie watch only 2 prototypes available to see what it originally was.
2: Garfield Caught in the Act: The Lost Levels: Just Garfield Caught in the Act with scrapped levels that have been fully developed. The only evidence of its existence were only scarce screenshots and people mentioning the game remembering playing it in their childhood.

I used to subscribe to Sega Channel. Cool if you ask me. Btw, the adapter (both American and Canadian) act both as a flash drive and a game cartridge once you download the game.

Sega Channel was how I played Pulseman. So mad they never brought that out of Japan, such a crazy game!
And my memory is a little bit hazy about this, but I had a 32x as well and I remember the 32x being SIGNIFICANTLY larger than the Sega Channel adapter.

I had a nomad as well, there are a few things you can’t do with it. There’s no reset button so you can’t beat the first XMen game. The Nomad ATE batteries. My brother and I were given one because my parents are divorced and lived kind of far apart, so once a month we would make a 3 hour car ride down and then 3 hours back up either the next day or a few days later depending on school. And of course summer vacations. Ha.
But anyway, we had to bring like a whole giant package of batteries with us on the car ride to keep the nomad running because my mom’s car didn’t have a 9v charger through the lighter.

And when you bring up Sega’s innovation, the Saturn could connect to the internet and the Dreamcast had full blown internet gaming.

If they didn’t want me to steal the Sega Channel adapter maybe they should’ve told Bernie to stop choking on Dick long enough to not discontinue the Saturn in North America 2 years before the Dreamcast launched here, all the while Japan continued to get cool new Saturn games. And maybe while he’s at it he could approve translations of good games to come west. Oh and instead of commissioning that huge steaming pile of excrement that was Congo they could have given us a Vectorman game for Saturn. Fuck you, Bernie Stiolar! Your career should’ve been buried in the Atari landfill with the rest of the trash.

I had Sega Channel and thoroughly enjoyed it until the service was cancelled in my region. I loved everything Sega Genesis, had the 32x and SegaCD attachments and a few 32X CD games. Also had a game gear and really liked it. Never got a Saturn or Dreamcast, though.

It's probably worth mentioning that a lot of cable companies didnt get on board with the Sega channel because some of them weren't willing to purchase and install the new hardware. So it's access was quite limited in some areas

Genesis is by far my favorite console to collect for, and this service actually got me into gaming. I've accumulated a really cool and large amount of promo goodies from the time of the service over the past few years. The production values here were excellent and it is one of the better videos on YT about the service. There were actually a couple of tweaks to the list of exclusive games I wanted to point out (not to be THAT guy, but for accuracy's sake). International Rugby and Body Count were two separate games...although International Rugby Body Count sounds like a sweet game :). Sonic Eraser was actually not a part of this service, but was part of the Mega Modem service. Garfield: The Lost Levels, The Flintstones: The Movie, and Addams Family Values were also games exclusive to this service. The latter two saw SNES releases with Addams Family Values getting a PAL release. The Flintstones: The Movie never saw a physical Genesis release, and Garfield: The Lost Levels has probably been lost to time unless a developer kept a prototype or ROM backup somewhere.

Very interesting that you point all this out, we never actually got to physically play the Sega Channel. So a lot of this video was composed with outside sources, detailing from ROM dumps, forum posts, and various other archives to paint a picture of what the service used to be. That particular section was sourced from the www.sega-16.com forums, while informative is still just a forum. Inaccuracies were to be expected when I was editing it, and that's my fault. That said, the typo of International Rugby Body Count does sound crazy. Sounds like a game I would have played on Newgrounds.com years ago.
I'm gonna pin your comment to the top, and make a note in the video description in case other people want to read it for more accuracy on the exclusive games for the Sega Channel. Thanks for bringing that up (you definitely aren't being THAT guy). I always want to strive for giving people entertaining, but most importantly accurate videos to watch!

Gracias. I have also seen some forum posts that are a bit dated. If you haven't seen so already, there are actually ROM dumps of about a year's worth of menus. While games obviously don't download, it gives a really awesome visual to how the service actually functioned and lets you navigate the full amount of content for what was there on that month. If you all are interested, I can actually try to get images of the promotional items.

I've seen the ROM dumps in action on other videos throughout the internet, unfortunately I couldn't get them working myself though.
Also, I'd love to see some of the promotional items! If you don't mind, we'd love to share them on our website's gallery if possible.

Try the Gens emulator. They have worked for me there. It's a really cool time capsule for me...so I'm def blinded by the nostalgia. Message me an e-mail addy and I can get some photos your way

even though this was a great idea, with awful trash timing, nobody wouldve grasped the fact that it was the better deal. back then when parents saw that new age 23.99 monthly price they just backed the f out because they looked at it as a new way for game company to take their money. And they were already get overcharged for the games because the cartridges were expensive back then. lol Then all the other shit they were doing like dropping multiple systems in one year. Till this day I still ask people did they have the Sega Channel and most people didnt even know what it was. I didnt even know it lasted that long because i only saw the damn commercial once then it died and my mom wouidnt buy it. like who tf was going to drop 50 dollars on a game when the channel gave them to you for dirt cheap? its like the dumbest part. any developer that dropped a game mustve been screwed.
