- Murlikant Petkar joined the Indian Army at the age of 18 in 1962. From childhood, he had a great passion for sports and was very good at boxing. While in the Indian Army, he won a medal in boxing in Japan.
However, during the 1965 war, the Pakistan army attacked his camp, and he was shot nine times. It was a miracle that he survived, but the injuries left his body paralyzed from the waist down.
But he was not one to give up. Doctors advised him to swim for his recovery. This eventually became his passion. In 1972, he participated in the Summer Paralympics in Germany.
He became the first Indian to win a gold medal at the Paralympics for India, winning it in a swimming event. Besides this, he won many other medals. Because of his dedication, he was awarded the Padma Shri in 2018.
