This doesn't explain the withdrawal from Homs and Hama. Surely Maher must've been asking what the heck is going on by the time Damascus is encircled. Please provide us with more updates and info when you can as this type of insight is not available at all elsewhere.
I am chewing on the first segment of your report, the part about the 4th division under Maher al-Assad. On the surface it'd seem as if Bashar al-Assad betrayed Baathist Syria (or whatever was left of it anyhow) and did so for personal and nuclear family salvation, even at the expense of sacrificing other relatives such as Maher himself (and all of Syria of course). This would fit the narrative that he was hoarding public money in Moscow and many other places. However a big question I have is why hasn't been Bashar al-Assad seen in public since soon after the, well prepared, HTS offensive began? It's only logical that in such an emergency situation the head of the state and iconic reference for those supporting the Baath regime (by preference or lack of alternatives) would issue some sort of national address calling to resist or pretending to be still able to do so at least, however nothing at all. So I've been wondering whether he was dead all this time, after all such a fast domino collapse, faster even than the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan after the unchalant US retreat (paved by massive bribes of nearly all republican commanders), necessarily required treason within the military and probably high places in the regime itself. Russia claims that Bashar is in Moscow but not even there he has been seen at all. There was a fake letter (no signature, no associated video-address of any sort) circulating these days but it only adds to incredulity about Bashar al-Assad being alive or free to speak (if alive). Does anyone know something I don't?
Assad and his family were already in Moscow when the offensive started, because his son was graduating from university there in late November. He returned by himself to Damascus only for a few days, situation was hopeless and then he fled back to Moscow to rejoin his family.
@@Ethan-qo9rx - Graduations happen in November in Russia? Strange. In any case, he's not been seen. I suspect either murder or kidnapping. I don't trust Putin much, especially not in anything related to Erdogan or Israel. My guess is that he probably gave Syria away in exchange for a good deal in Ukraine (where Russia is winning but slowly and also needs to get sanctions removed for the sake of trade and prosperity) or something in that line.
Wouldn't someone who'd done what Assad is supposed to have done, want to hibernate ? And of course, people behind his assassination would want some time elapse, before their action being discovered, to minimise reaction from the remnants of the Syrian military, wouldn't they ?
I hope your friend is taking great care in his communication methods. Sounds extremely confusing all round. There could be an element of good cop, bad cop...as part of the normalising and rejuvenation of HTS process...is that too conspiratorial?
The fact is that HTS are trying to play government and shaking off all their ideological past but HTS is one of many groups and even though they are theoretically in charge of all the other groups in reality it's not so straightforward. Many of those groups (and their individual fighters) are much more radical and unwilling to accept coexistence with minorities. That being said, things are not as bad as this video suggests, very few incidents of revenge or religious discrimination have occurred considering how much built up hate there was in the country. HTS is now moving forward to dismantle all armed factions (including themselves) and withdraw all weapons in the country outside of the states hands.
