On August 20, the Supreme Court directed the CBI to present its investigation report in a sealed cover to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. This follows the Court's suo motu action in the Kolkata rape-murder case, with the CBI tasked to report on both the ongoing investigation and recent hospital vandalism. Criticism was directed at the West Bengal government for mishandling the case, and a report was requested on the mob that disrupted the crime scene during a protest.
The CBI is also continuing its interrogation of former RG Kar hospital principal Sandip Ghosh. Amidst nationwide protests, the Supreme Court has established a national taskforce to address safety concerns for medical professionals, particularly women. Doctors’ groups, currently on strike, have pledged to cooperate with the taskforce and are calling for a central law on the matter.
