  • The Alpine Fault in the South Island of New Zealand forms the boundary between the Pacific and Australian tectonic plates. It produces very large earthquakes (up to Magnitude 8+) every 250 to 300 years on average. Although it seems like an insignificant crack in this video short, it runs for hundreds of kilometres and is responsible for the creation of the Southern Alps over the last 10 million years.
It last ruptured in 1717 giving a very high probability of rupturing (~75%) in the next 50 years.

Always loved seeing fault lines around NZ. But not sure I’ve ever seen one this significant? How do you tell that crack is the fault between the plates.

I live in Christchurch New Zealand and the Alpine fault is well overdue. Makes me nervous. Could destroy the whole south island.

Even a 9.2 on the alpine fault would not shake Chch as sharply as the 6.2 in the Estuary in 2011. There's a lot of attenuation due to distance, so the shaking might have the same amplitude but nowhere near the same accelerations. MIght be tough on the settlements near the fault, but there are few of those.

@@Gottenhimfella well you learn something new every day, even if it's far off track. The two subduction zones will meet on collision course, which will of course cause STH island to break, most likely in two. From a 7 to 8 on the rictor scale. The Puysegur & Hikurangi. Anywho the biggest threat to New Zealand is the worlds strongest directed energy weapon system located in STH pole. That made Kai-koura rise, then the Christchurch one also got twatted, . The name is Ice cube neutrino detector, not only a passive listening device as claimed,it's a digital optical module.
