I've got to say that I completely disagree. I understand how people might feel that the message slaps you around the face a bit but sometimes I think we need that. I enjoyed almost all of the performances, particularly Leo and Jennifer but I think Streep and Jonah were great. Timothee Chalamet was a delight! I think the film could have been funnier but there is constant comedy throughout and it gave me a lot of laughs. I really found the story great and I found the satire on point and yes on the nose at times. I came out of the film with a bit of a lump in my throat as I found the ending powerful, I'm still thinking about it today. The critics haven't been as negative as Hancock describes, its been a pretty even 50/50 split. But the thing is, the film is critical in Journalism and the medias role in global degradation so I do suspect some critics aren't going to be overly fond of their livelihood being tarnished like that. This is in my top films of the year and I highly recommend it.
Agree , this movie was refreshing, it poked at a lot of things about the state of things today, it kept me engaged the entire time, a very good production from top to bottom..
My problem isn’t the performances it’s the fact that every scene has a different tone it’s like your watching a completely different movie and it’s not taking itself seriously at all obviously but it’s not even being sarcastic in it’s humor either.
@@weneedcriticalthinking I can’t get attached to characters or the plot when it’s shifting every 5 minutes , this doesn’t feel like a movie it feels like I’m watching someone have a dream about what they think the world functions like.
You see the reason why i didnt laugh much during the movie is because it hit too close to home, leo's last line in the movie is what sums it up. The depiction of the sociopaths at the helm of the empire, the media and their goals, the tribalistic behavior of poeple, the private intrests that corrupts the system and the course of civilization...its all there
It's all there and it's all very real. I can totally see the world's governments prioritizing profit rather than saving it from impending doom. This guy has no idea what he's talking about, whoever he is reviewing this masterpiece.
Fax like some of the lines I couldn’t even call satire because our politicians literally talk nearly the exact same way. Specifically the line “if you’re poor just play the lottery and get a winning ticket”
I've never disagreed with a reviewer more in my life. Ever. It's like we live in parallel universes. Goes to show how important it is to know reviewers' tastes before putting any weight on their reviews.
I don't think you have to share the same taste in movies to know if their analysis of a film is valid or not. it's if they bring up valid points that show they actually thought about it critically. I liked the movie but for the amount of money and level of the cast, it was just not that impressive. The beginning had an interesting setup but the middle was a pointless and random mish-mash of societal critiques that have already been shown. The ending scene montage was great though but that's because it was beautifully filmed and not because of the storyline/script.
@@MilkshakeCowboy disagree. It showed all the ways that people can be manipulated in the media or how politicians are easily swayed by what helps them in elections or how a president answers to corporations. @@MilkshakeCowboy - Of course you don't have to _share_ the same taste, but you have to _know_ the reviewer's taste. For example, I'm willing to bet that far more conservatives disliked the movie than progressives, even though it mocks the full spectrum of modern American politicians. Art is subjective. There are people who love the color blue, people who hate it, and people everywhere in between. And _everyone_ is correct. There's no wrong way to _feel_ about something. For example, If I were to review any sports video game, the review would be scathing, because I can't stand the genre. There's absolutely nothing about sports videogames I like. And I can articulate why, but to a sports fan, every time I say X or Y element is unfun, unenjoyable, or unsatisfying, they're gonna cringe because those elements are what draws them to the game in the first place! Yes, the movie was too long, too direct, too heavy handed … and I _loved_ all of those things! That scathing critique of current year humanity was exactly the kind of movie I wanted to watch and the dark humor was right up my alley 😁

Movies can keep direction without being labeled with a genre. Most of your complaints are that the movie didn’t meet your predetermined notion on what it was supposed to be. The bias and correlations to earlier work of the directors and actors were lazier than the key points you brought up. Only thing I agree with was that it was a bit too long

@@SmartDave60 right?! This movie made me laugh but it was probably the most stressful film I've ever watched (in a good way.) Like where was the boredom?
I feel like the person reviewing this felt like he was being made fun of, and that’s why he doesn’t like the movie, and that’s why he has nothing good to say, and why all the jokes were way over his head. This is comedy and horror and the movie knows what type of movie it is. It’s holding up a mirror, to the absurdity of it all.
I liked the movie and listened to a few minutes of this video and honestly this review is just a horrible take of the movie. But whew, I read the comments and it seems like I’m not the only one who finds this review ridiculous. When DiCaprio’s character is having a “what the hell is going on?!?!” mental breakdown, I imagined that’s what most scientists and doctors are feeling like doing at the moment. From tv evangelism to lizard people conspiracy theorists, this country has gone full blown grifter. I grew up in Texas surrounded by the ridiculous religious culture, (like people who actually sent their money to tv evangelists like Jim baker), and then I moved 1500 miles away from that awful state and it was pretty cool for several years but now it sees like the internet has made the entire country a haven for grifting evangelists… Whether political or religious its all just a great big awful exercise in willful ignorance, and this movie did a great job showing just how ridiculous it is.
It was such a relief to watch this movie because it put into film actual thoughts and feelings I've had for the past decade about climate change. I've literally thought about this exact scenario, or that of a sinking ship and some people struggling to convince the majority that they need to bail it out to survive. Edit: Also, I live in Alberta, the Texas of Canada, and people here are in total denial here about climate change because their salary depends on oil. Talking about it or even that we need to diversify because the world is changing can actually lead to social ostracism
I think the premise was good. But the humor got old real quick. The constant sarcastical nature of it was lazy. I good bored and didn't watch all of it.
Can I just say that as a Christian, people like Jim Baker and scandalous people like that do not reflect people like me?! And yes, I really liked this movie.
I think the fact that reviewers and content creators let the political perspective of the director influence their review echos the message of the movie. People care more about their personal political agendas than real impactful things, messages, narratives, or stories.
I absolutely agree. I knew watching this movie that people would not take the message to heart and instead feel attacked if they leaned more to one side than the other. You are so right that it completely validates the movies point.
Everything is political. To say one is playing into the movie's criticism by "politicizing it" (i.e. responding to it honestly from one's own political perspective) is just confirming that the movie is MEANT to be taken in an "apolitical" way, which ultimately benefits its own apocalyptic prophecy by insinuating that the solution to this very real existential threat is to NOT discuss it or try to find a solution because that would be "cringy" like the characters.
And that's the kind of dumbass attitude that they use to defend this shit film, they will basically point their fingers at any criticism and go "see, we told you!" It's a crap movie written by a hardcore socialist and Bernie Sanders former main speechwriter and senior advisor
honestly i actually really like the movie i didn't know it was suppose to be a comedy but the jokes in there where pretty entertaining. i would definitly reccoment it to friends
Totally agree it was a long Movie and kept me interested the whole time. Then some surprises dispersed but tied together in the end credits were cool too.
I started watching this movie thinking/hoping it was going to be hilarious, but then, somewhere in there I stopped laughing and got a little despondent, realizing this is exactly what we are living through right now. Is it about MAGA or Covid or climate change? Yes. And I could absolutely see a meteor or comet or whatever destroying Earth as some people try to figure out how to capitalize, others try to deny and others just try to make it light. The only things I think he missed was that I don't think the rest of the world would sit on their hands letting America do whatever (or not), he missed the people trying to sell books on their opinion of the end of the world, and I think there would be at least a few doomsday preppers trying to make homemade submarines ...but then maybe the preppers would be in the Don't Look Up crowd. 🤷🏽 This movie is the best thing I've seen in a very long time. I'm gonna watch it again tonight I think.
> The only things I think he missed was that I don't think the rest of the world would sit on their hands letting America do whatever Actually, the movie doesn't dwell on this idea as much as it could, but it does address this. You might remember a scene towards the end where a facility in Russia--I think--is blown up, thwarting the plan by China, Russia, and a number of other nations to unify and implement their own planet-saving plan. I felt the implication of this event was that the US or the tech giant had caused the explosion somehow, ensuring their supremacy, but I didn't find evidence supporting this idea in the edit we got. But +1 on the lack of preppers in the film. I think the closest was that some lady on TV noted that shovel sales were through the roof and it only just occurred to me that maybe people were trying to dig shelters.
Totally agree, I think the sheer banality and lack of mania in the film is the exact point. The only thing I agreed with the reviewer on was the fact that Twitter is a daily shitshow. He went on to mention other previous satirical movies & noted they were criticised at the time of release. Something tells me it’s possible this will be more favourably reviewed in the future too.
Totally agree, they only mention once that India Russia and China worked on something, but it failed at the launch site in Kazakhstan. No explanation, it just fails and the Americans are de facto the world saviors once again. Bu the way Russian rockets are known as some of the most reliable in the world, so having one just blow up for the sake of advancing your plot is really lazy writing in my opinion.
Yes the movie was not what I was expecting either. It's funny, for the most part, but not in a way that actually made me laugh out loud. I mean, it's witty and well written....not all the jokes worked though but it's funny overall. The thing about this movie for me once it got going was that I realized it really wasn't a comedy at all. I started to understand that this movie was actually pretty serious and only cleverly disguised as a comedy. It became downright scary at times because it very intelligently described the world that we are living in right now. One point I disagree with you though is that preppers would not be with the don't look up crowd. Quite the opposite in that it would be the Ariana Grande popular media crowd that would spearhead the "Don't Look Up" crowd and it would be the preppers that would be trying to warn people to wake up and look up. This movie is not a total dud whatsoever and I would recommend the movie. It makes you think about the state of the world today and what is going to happen in the near future. lol maybe the content creator of this video review is part of the "Don't Look Up" crowd.
you say this movie isn't extreme enough but they wrote this before the pandemic. Then they had to change it because the reality of how we were reacting to the pandemic was crazier than what they originally wrote. This movie has a huge impression on me because it was a glimpse of our current trajectory as modern humans. We probably won't come together in the end to fight off whatever will come that will doom us all. There will never be a kumbaya moment for us. We're just gonna bicker and fight to the bitter end.
I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of Adam Mckay's films. Really, not a one of them. But this movie was a perfect satire with some lovely black comedy sprinkled on top. Satire's aren't supposed to be gut-wrenchingly funny. This movie made me squirm at points because of how close to home it hits in todays political and social environments. It hits at both sides of the ideological spectrum effectively and the themes directly speak to the issues the world is currently facing. With all the half-baked productions that I've seen lately this was a genuine relief of a film due to its sheer honesty about our current day and age. I've been recommending it to everyone because it has a message and it tells that message very well in its satire.
Oh is it? There is a rock the size of Mt Everest on a collision course with the Earth? Meryl Streep is the president, and Leo is the authority on science. In your reality sure. But that “literally” made me laugh 😂🥴🤡

@@carlos_cub You can confidently use the word "Idiot". Because what this guy doesn't understand is its not exactly a comedy movie, so his complain not being funny is kinda dumb. And the reason these people feel upset is either they didn't get it or feel personally attacked, but won't say.
This guy just proved the filmmakers point by saying that DiCaprio and Lawrence's great performances will become memes. Judging performances by wether or not they become memes is a perfect irony
Loved it, honestly. If it had dropped in 2019 I'd probably have dismissed it as being a well acted but preachy climate change metaphor, but after the last two years I'd say it's almost too kind in it's portrayal of real world emergency response. Only real nitpicks I have are with it's length and pacing, but since it's a Netflix release I didn't mind pausing and picking it up later.
The media portrayal was the best part. I know it was suppose to be “political satire” but they were obviously depicting republicans in a very different way to the point where the chant “don’t look up” was sounding like “Donald trump” in a scene and framed the signs to like like “make America great again”. I laughed 1 time the whole movie and their were a lot of cringe worthy scenes. The movie was supposed to be some weird metaphor for climate change but ended up being a political message from a star studded cast. Everything political aside, doesn’t take a genius to realize the actual contents of the movie were pretty bad
Exactly, also despite that being straight up censorship at play there. Ironically, this is the type of thing the movie was despising, the woke culture mind virus, which is destroying us today.
@@KevinS47 incredibly wrong reading of the movie. The media actually mocks people like you very explicitly, as shown in how people respond to Lawrence's character freaking out on TV. Try watching the movie McKay made, not the one you wish he made.
I'll tell you why it isn't a funny movie : because we're going through the exact events of the movie but with a virus instead of a comet, and the movie is more a documentary than fiction. Let me give you an example. The other day, the public transportation drivers in my city (Paris) went on strike, running half the trains only. They normally do this every month, it's pretty much tradition. The trains are already normally packed, and the strike now forces people to squeeze themselves, five people per square meter, *during a pandemic,* with half the people not wearing their mask or wearing it on their chin like it helps. This movie didn't make me laugh, because maybe *it wasn't the point.* But what do I know, I have a brain, unlike, apparently, 99% of people. It was a great movie, with great acting, and it's depressing. Like Das Boot. On purpose.
They made fun of a political side while doing it which was completely disingenuous. They obviously portayed Maga as dont look up protestors. Its so dumb because like the Comet, we literally KNOW COVID IS REAL. We just questiom the validity of the vaccines. In this movie this movie fails at attacking anti vaxxer Trump supporters because when they said in the movie that the politicians profit off of the comet, it sort of is a mirror on these morons when literally THEY PROFIT OFF OF THESE VACCINES. They wont allow Drs and professors to point out that these shots are creating micro clots and heart inflammation. They are literally censoring them, calling them crack pot conspiracy theorist. They lie about what they say. They lied even about Dr. Bhakdi. Its insane.

I think you hit the nail on the head here. The satire and comedy were just so incredibly obvious and lazy. I think that’s why people are finding it preachy: because the message delivered through the “comedy” is just way too on-the-nose.
Melancholia is about depression. It's literally the name of the movie. The whole purpose of the movie is to show how people react to depression. The metaphor for this is the rogue planet. @@hankchinaski_ Did you watch the movie? I can try to briefly spell it out for you: Dealing with the situation immediately was deemed to be a bad PR move politically. Their secondary international backup plan was denied by a military strike. The president went out of her way to deny the situation because it spoke to her supporters. You seem like a... smart guy. What do you think I would do instead? Would I act and somehow try to prevent the imminent cataclysm, or would I be bogged down by banal social constructs which ultimately allows the destruction of everything we've all known? @@necksnappa "they had the answer" ... Do you think science has an answer to the problem of an object the size of Mt. Everest hurtling toward earth with a 6-month anticipated impact date? If you actually knew the science you'd know that the current best-case scenarios for some kind of response suggest a minimum 5-year window. Any response less than 5-years is irrelevant. But even this is all just speculation... too many variables. Like that other problem people seem to think "science" has a firm grip on. Say.... climate. So why did McKay go with 6-months in the story? It's obvious. He had to _ignore_ the science, because otherwise the story wouldnt work to fit his political narrative. That's what's so funny about this movie being utterly unfunny. Then script introduces that other fad utterly destroying the modern academy.... the supposition that scientific consensus bests scientific inquiry... and treats it as if's holy writ, which is the _actual_ problem with the modern academy. So the script chooses to ignore this shibboleth of institutional dysfunctionality in academia in favor of the more glaringly obvious focus on our politics run-off-the-tracks and _then_ posit it as a partisan "us v them" issue..... That's my definition of playing to a political base. Aaaand... here's the base, proving my point. Movies project fears of the time it was made and this one is on point about our denial and lack of certified approval from competent figure. The absence of purpose and lack of tools to address problems of our modern times. The Comet embodies the modern existential crisis of our society in a subtle comedic way. A great movie to end a terrible year.
This movie is absolutely brilliant. One of my favorites of the year. The people that hate this movie is the very people that it makes fun of. If you are in the crowd that don't believe in climate change or covid, this movie will trigger you.
I loved this movie. It was really. Really good. If you didn’t like it. You have bad taste in movies. This wasn’t supposed to just be a comedy. It’s more of a thriller.
Satire can sometimes be funny. But that's not the purpose of satire. I think the reason why a lot of viewers may be frustrated it's because they're looking at this film and trying to figure out where they fall on the spectrum of absurdity. They are personalizing the film to their own lives which in all honesty we're supposed to do but there are also here in the critique of their own personal views and that's the purpose of satire. This movie was A+.
It's not a comedy, it's a satire. They're similar, yes, but ultimately, pretty different. For example in the Superhero world; Superhero movie is a comedy, a dark parody comedy, but a movie nonetheless. Meanwhile, The Boys is a satire on the Superhero genre. Pretty different when put to think of it, same case with this movie. Just making this correction. ^_^;
In the absence of laughs, we're left with... an absurdist yet accurate mirror to our reality. I don't think McKay owes us subtlety or humor, and I'm glad him was actually bold enough to deliver this movie as is.
This movie was incredible! I can't believe how wrong this reviewer is. Watch it and accept it for what it is. If you hate looking into a mirror you might hate seeing this movie. Not for the faint of heart.
You didn't get it, did you....It's not about the social media, it's about people being blind for what they do not want to see rather covering up the unpleasant truth with amusement. In addition, you said something like: It's not nearly bizar enough, but that's because reality itself is so bizar it's hard to topple that. Imo, very, very good movie doing exactly what it should: create debate.
Right. You're the base it was playing to. This is why it fails. A really good movie should force _introspection_ .... instead... it's just feeding its base. Never mind. You don't want to get it..... fine.
@@hankchinaski_ when you say base I'm assuming you mean people who care about climate change? Also I think what makes a really good film depends on the viewer. Personally I think this is one of the best films I've seen this year

The movie is literally about people like this guy missing the point of big problems we really need to address... it doesn't need to be funny, it doesn't need to have "we like to keep it light here" attitude, it needs to be heard, processed and taken seriously, so we can get real experts and people who actually know wtf is going on in the f**ed up times
Reviews on how much this movie hurt the reputation of it's cast and writers, or how nicely or fittingly it adds up to their "arsenal" aren't relevant. It is meant to drive home a point regarding modern society, media and politics. Personally I found the movie funny, accurate and emotional. I respect your opinion on the comedy and you point out some interesting points. Just make sure you judge the movie for what it is. It is not meant to overly exaggerate, but to accurately depict the craziest phenomenons in our society today.
To each their own, while watching the movie I realized pretty quickly that many people will dislike it a lot, I enjoyed it very, very much. I laughed quite a lot, but have not seen the movie at all as a comedy, but a frighteningly candid portrayal of how blind todays society is, how much they would rather believe in ridiculous theories instead of "just looking up" and looking at the obvious truth. You weigh heavily on the "comedy" part, I don't believe this movie was supposed to be that.
The comedy only works if you can laugh at our flaws as humans. I think that maybe some people don't like then being pointed out at all? I thought it was great.
I'm starting to wonder if the director was consciously aware that the movie the movie he created is actually a serious disaster movie disguised as a comedy. I wonder if he did it like this on purpose.
@@patricity9355 oh you’re right, your opinion is the only one that matters. Check the comments. Most non critics enjoyed this film. Seems pretty watchable to me.

It definitely feels like a “plague on both your houses” kind of movie especially versus something like Vice which was painfully onesided. interestingly enough I said to myself while watching it that it reminded me a lot of Dr.Strangelove but today. Without the ever present threat of nuclear war I do feel like climate is essentially our issue of the day but McKay finds a place that makes this allegory applicable to any situation. It’s pokes fun at the powerful and says that sometimes the best you can do is try but in the end having a laugh with your family and ignoring our inevitable demise can be better than falling to the idiotic godlike hubris the rich and powerful often have. Also MARK RYLANCE IS AMAZING can’t believe I don’t hear more people talk about that.
Oh yea, "plague on both houses" is the perfect description of why I loved it so much. It beautifully captured how modern witty one-upmanship distracts from the genuine concerns actual humans and how they are shouted out by the people that just want to argue for sport. Step one: you're forced to take sides instead of addressing issues clearly and with the wisdom to listen. We cloth ourselves in the ways we are right, and our opponents in how we are wrong. For me, the movie captured the feeling of helplessness and homelessness you feel when you want to shout at them "HEY nobody is dealing with any of the problems because everyone is defending against the people who are using the solutions to serve agendas!"
""A Total " disagree,This Movie was top shelf in my book. this Movie pokes out the media, the memes, the state of my Country USA today. The things it hit's on could be associated with the treatment of the good whistleblowers of the 21st century like Juklian Assange, Daniel Hale etc, or the fighter of good who is locked up like Steven Donziger for suing big evil oil.
Oh boy.. I work media for one of the biggest networks in Canada. I can tell you with 100% certainty that science denial falls on either side in our incredibly divided world. This movie acts as a conformation bias for so many people...
Denial is a question of validity and science is meant to be questioned. That's actually how we define valid science, it's the shit that holds up to scrutiny. It's a disagreement, denial implies that you know with perfect certainty that you are correct and so any dissonance must be denial. This idea of science denial has done far more to keep good an accurate science out of the mainstream than it has to prevent false ideals. The universe revolving around the earth was science and the people who rightly questioned it were the deniers of their time. Newton, Einstein, virtually every great figure in science could have been considered a science denier at one point or another. Denial has never been a problem for science but it's a huge thorn in the side of an authoritarian or a narcissist.
@Tonberry I like your comment though, at least you don't pretend the movie isn't a political hack job that attempts to state some people are right... because they look up... and some are wrong. So.... political hack job, not transformative narrative reflecting on the human condition. In order to accomplish that goal, it would have to embrace the idea that... maybe.... just maybe... we're all wrong. All the time. Thx dude.
I personally don’t agree with a lot of Adam’s political point of views, but always find myself memorized when he comes out with a film. I really do appreciate him giving me different point of views of my beliefs. This movie was absolutely fantastic in every way possible.
I respect your view, and so far usually agreed with your reviews, but this time I dont. I mean I can understand some of what you are saying, I wasnt laughing loud that often during the movie and I was a bit bored a few times. But I also think a lot of scenes were quite good, and it spoke something important. The phrase "dont look up" and the 2 camps of "dont look up" and "look up" were quite brillant imho. Overall for me its like a 7/10 movie, worth watching.
"Idiocracy was a smart movie about how stupid we are becoming", "Don't Look Up is a stupid movie about how stupid we are" I cant say it any better than that.
It's the kind of movie that emotionally manipulated AOC followers will latch onto to confirm their biases. Remember you dimwits, every 4 years we get psycho politicians banging the climate drums, screaming about the end of the world, pushing green movement that actually isn't green so they can get their votes from you emotionally manipulated Neanderthals. So many people watching this movie are thinking "Gaaaaawd, finally, my tribal views are being confirmed! Everyone around me is stupiiiiid, the worlds ending but they don't see iiiiiiiiiit". "Trust the government funded scieeeeeence, but don't trust opposing scieeeeeence"
@@SimonHergott haha! You know, i actually believe climate change is a real thing and that our way of life is probably driving it. But i agree wholeheartedly with everything you say here. It points to the much larger issue, which is that "scieeeeeence" has become the new releeeeegion. haha!
And whats hilarious is, the people who believe this movie holds such an important message.. they're not going to change their ways. They're not going to make personal changes. They won't start gardening and composting their waste, minimizing their own footprint. They won't ride a bike or walk instead of driving. They won't make the personal changes that need to happen on a societal level. You'll all continue to be mindless consumers, upgrading your phones every year, consuming made in china garbage. You want to endlessly consume while simultaneously thinking that all you need to do is support politicians who are pushing fraudulent green movements that they're financially invested in. But the one thing that the last 2 years has brought us is the fact that inflation is going to make all you dumb nitwitted plebs even more poor than you already are. Lifes going to get a lot harder for you thanks to all these socialist policies that are destroying our economies. You want to know what a real comet plummeting towards earth looks like? It looks like billions of dollars printed by our governments, but all you people are too blind to see the real threat.
@@SimonHergott I actually think its worse. The real comet plummeting towards earth is our own ignorance and arrogance in general. What strikes me most about this kind of film is that it is an objectively poorly written and directed film, just on the merits of filmmaking alone its just bad. The jokes are bad, the dialogue bad. I have friends who actually understand the finer points of filmmaking who can't see past the ideological message, they actually recommended it to me! That scares me. That, and the fact that the only real message one could take away from the film is a suicidal one. Which also begs the question of what these hollywood producers are actually trying to accomplish with this kind of nonsense. Point being, i can ignore the politics entirely and just look at the ability of the viewer to discern something of value from total garbage. The fact that they can't, is the thing to be afraid of. The comet plummeting towards earth is ignorance and arrogance combined and its moving faster.
I think the movie’s portrayal of the government and general public’s ignorance and distrust of the scientific community is actually very accurate, which is truly horrifying because the move is supposed to be a dark comedy. I quit my marine biology study and research for art because I feel like nothing we scientists and researchers say is eventually going to matter even if we have actual scientific facts and data to proof it, people will still believe whatever the hell they think is right anyway no matter how absurd the logic behind it actually is.
No one is saying the movie wasn't an accurate portrayal of how absurd media/society is currently. It just didn't offer anything new or challenging. I've seen UA-camrs do funny bits about crazy politicians that were funnier it's just in this movie they had Meryl Streep and Johan Hill doing it.
I don’t think this movie was a an accurate portrayal of anything, really. Not science, nor politics. It was a hyperbolic commentary and the relationship between science and politics. In real life, a finding like a comet heading straight for earth in 6 months, would spread like wild fire, long before these scientists spoke to the president. Astronomers, and the scientific community automatically report findings to all other observational institutions, in order to validate the data. There would be no covering up, or people not caring. People would care like a motherfucker. Even an administration as inept as Trumps, would want to do whatever we could, because again, their lives depend on it. This isn’t the same as an illness with a low fatality rate, or a nebulous and far off concept like catastrophic climate change, this is a fucking comet that will be verified by every scientist and and governing body on the planet, quite rapidly, as an impending extinction event. No, this is not a realistic portrayal of how anything works, and it’s not trying to be.
The thing some people hate about “don’t look up” is that it equates the crazy reality denying conspiracy theorists (overly represented on our political right) with the happy talk, corporate technocrats, who just put a prettier shimmer on total greed and utter incompetence (overly represented on the left). at the same time, it hits the bullseye on the hopelessness of a news media built on attention and controversy over truth. Best satire I’ve seen in years!
Hmm, that response doesn't quite sit with me well. The news anchors are the primary suppliers of happy talk in this film and they never once, even from the start, actively deny the reality of the earth being in peril, they just try to keep it "light" because it "helps the medicine go down." The technocrats who view the crisis as something to be profited over engage in neither conspiracy nor conspiracy theory. The "Don't Look Up" slogan is difficult to read as a denial of reality since the very people in the film propagating that message are publicly enacting a plan to deal with it--albeit in a totally incompetent way. If I had to do a political analysis of the film, while the president felt somewhat Trump-ish, having her son in office and the supreme court nominee scandal seeming to recall Bret Kavanaugh, the president also shows inspiration from Hillary and Obama. A Joe Biden look-a-like can even be seen in the background of some scenes. The political ideologies the film seems most critical of are Ayn Randian objectivism, ""the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute", and neoliberalism, a loosely-defined political philosophy around the relationship between government and the open market. The objectivist hero in this film is not humanity's savior, as an objectivist would think, but rather their doomer, and the final nail in the coffin is the government's sale of the asteroid to the free-market entrepreneur, trusting that the profit-seeking motivations of the free market will work out in our favor over direct government intervention. On one hand, I believe that if a work of art reads a way to an observer, their reading of it is valid no matter what, but this interpretation feels a bit to me like coming into the film with a particular world view and expectations, then finding discomfort by the film not confirming those expectations and being something different.
I fully agree with you Media is about clickbait and ratings I’m amazed at the reviewer as I think there might be 2 versions of this movie, as I clearly dis not see the same movie as he did… When snoden proved to the USA government was doing illegal activities and lied, did they all go after getting officials arrested? - Nope - they reported on how unpatriotic he was and a traitor/whistleblower…
If you'd have replaced "overly represented on the left", with 'overly represented in the liberal centre, ie centrism, which is what the democrats are', I'd have agreed. We have to stop this bullshit alienation of the left. If allowed to, true left-wing politics, socialism in other words, would come closer to fixing the world than any other political ideology. Equality for all, fairness, ending the relentless drive for infinite growth with finite resources, and helping to save the planet.
Interesting, I came away with the exact same opinion but the opposite reaction. By the end I was just sitting there thinking “of course this is how it will end” which made me feel considerably more alone. No chance I’ll watch this one a second time. It’s bad enough to see it all unfold in real life; I need more escapism from my entertainment.
@@budarnold2916 I can absolutely understand your reaction as well. It was, ultimately, a film about the sad state of humanity, and that's heckin depressing. This guy watches too many movies…to the point that all of his criticism is simply a comparison to other similar movies. As someone who rarely has time to watch a movie, and doesn’t spend any time on the social media platforms depicted in the movie, I thought it was hilarious…. and it stood well on its own.
Finally found an honest review... Everybody that says this movie doesn't suck are either clueless or well paid. The thing that really makes it bad, is my high expectations for it...The plot and cast was set up for something great. But i am utterly disappointed.
GREAT REVIEW. I agree with everything you said. My main issue with the movie was how out-of-touchly catered to a young audience it felt. The loud music and painfully obvious message just made me cringe. All for waking people up but I worry doing it in such a fashion will turn more people off than on. Ive been recommending Melancholia to everyone as well. That film is like this but for adults.
Sometimes movie reviewers just like to hear themselves talk. This is an example. Its Rotten tomatoes reviewers and their smug flamboyant critiques are so out of sync with the average person and are more a contrarian competition or trying to win a literary Oscar themselves. This whole "im offended that the metaphor is too overt" proves the movies point. Society and its influencers are petty as fk. Because a movie wasn't pigeonholed as a comedy to make you personally laugh it's bad? If a movie evokes emotions and is categorized a certain way that isn't the fault of the movie. It takes a very elitist sense of humor because no one is rofl at dr. Stranglove.
Melancholia over Don't look up? Those two movies are completely different.. This guy sounds like he has a good grasp of the English language... But comparing those two movies is like comparing The Green mile with Shawshank redemption.. Just because they both take place in a prison doesn't mean they are in the same genre...
The dislike bar may have gone away, but math is sill our friend: As of now a this video has a whopping 3.13% of likes in comparison to views. Way to go, great review...
Bruh u so wrong, I completely disagree and so do many others, movie was funny as hell, the dark plot was brilliant and casts were spot on, u can have ur opinion tho
i think this movie was extremely interesting and captivating and engaging and not preachy but instead realistic and grounded - i thought almost all the actors were fantastic and i especially loved jennifer lawrence. i think it really does matter what perspective you come from - coming from a science background it made a big impression on me and it was actually fear inducing, it gave me chills and i’m still thinking about the ending
U call it grounded and realistic?? I call it an old fashioned, predictable comedy movie with a ridiculous social commentary about capitalism. To prove my point let’s look at COVID, one the first cases were recorded and reported in China it was soon being shown on all news channels and was instantly seen as a threat, it was underestimated which allowed to spread however not ignored by government leaders as depicted in the movie. Calling it grounded and realistic shows a complete lack of understanding about how people react, of course there would be people who would deny the existence of a comet but not to the extent of the movie. It did not come off as preachy, grounded or realistic just another silly, forgettable movie.
Not really. I dont "believe" in COVID as in its pretty obvious this whole shit has been blown out of proportions for financial profit. (Also, what type of "vaccine" needs a booster every 3 months? And for how long? You do know this virus will NOT "vanish", right?) Anyway. I dont believe in that shit and I LOVED this movie. In fact, maybe Im right and youre wrong. And the social commentary is about people only paying attention to "knowlegeable scientists"...
It kind of reminded me of It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World from way back in the 60's with its crazy ensemble cast. Loved the Ron Perlman character who could have been taken right out of Dr. Strangelove. Seemed unnecessarily long at times; needed a few scenes trimmed, but there's a punchline at the very end where Meryl Streep gets her comeuppance that was brilliantly funny.
it's a good movie. 'Critics' who disliked it, probably saw parts of themselves in it, then rushed to make a 'review' on UA-cam, while trying not to sound too personally insulted. They're like Yelpers who got a bun with a thumbprint in it.

@@g.c.2743 Ooooh, exciting. A real sy-un-matist. Let me ask you a scientific question, Mr. Scientist. What would have been the most rational, the best case "response" scenario for observing a comet or astroid hurtling directly toward earth at any time before.... say.... the 1980s.... or.... as we say colloquially, basically any time in human history. What? It's a rhetorical question, so I know the answer in fact, but let's do play a game of why this movie is really just political fodder and not excellent satire, although it _could_ have been. Follow on question. Let's take the movie's premise at face value. Today.... astronomers from 3,000 universities form a thing scientists refer to as "the scientific concensus," because... you know... science is all about agreeing with other scientists.... do we need the sarc tags here... never mind.... so.... the "scientific consensus" bellows at us... that.... a comet / astroid / object the size of... Mt. Everest is hurtling directly at earth and will strike within the next 6 months.... Okay. Now what. You're the scientist. You tell me.
@@g.c.2743 You shouldn't have to be a movie critic and require a license to label something "officially funny," but it _is_ funny that that _should_ be one of the things this movie _could_ have taken a shot at.... this idea that a certain class of people possess wisdoms the rest of us mere mortals no longer possess. Which is just one of the reasons... among many... this movie fails as satire. It's a propaganda piece. I'll repeat again. _Good_ storytelling illuminates the human condition. _This_ movie.... thinks it is... but really... it's just aa piqued social commentary with a political perspective. This movie seems to keep garnering comparisons to _Dr. Strangelove_ . Riddle me this. What "political" party was represented in Dr. Strangelove. Let me present you with an alternative.... ever seen _Wag the Dog_ ? David Mamet wrote it when he was a card-carrying member of a political party. You think that's evident from the story? _Wag the Dog_ is one of the funniest satires of American politics ever, and one of the reasons is because Mamet had his finger on the pulse. Ever read _Candide_ ? What political persuasion was Voltaire, based on a reading of Candide? I'll say it one more time.... if it's not elevating itself above a certain "perspective" ...it's not a transformative commentary on the human condition... it's just a political hack job. And, judging from the comments... that's exactly how it's being received. I think it's evident to _you_ it was a sloppy allegory in reference to our global warming hubbub... it was to _me_ , because... the alleged satirizing of the corporatist in this movie is in fact _exactly_ the response we're getting to the global pandemic. Like I said.... it has a lot of pontential, and if McKay had opted to co-write with someone of any other political persuasion perhaps it could have succeeeded. It has a lot of great stuff. Just watched _Wag the Dog_ last week. Think Ive seen it.... 40... 50 times... still laugh. Just watch this dud for the second time... it's even unfunnier than it was the first time. You enjoy your new year, and don't forget... the sky is falling and no one's listening.

@@vaiyt Well they didn't make it about me so you must mean they made it about people like me. This leads me to believe that you are trying to attack my character rather than dispute what I said. If that's the case, how is your attitude in this instance different from the people who ignored the woman scientist because she seemed crazy?
I felt like it was a B-movie with A-list actors. I guess you’re saying something similar? It does a good job pushing the message across regarding the state of what people value nowadays and where it needs to be diverted to but if you don’t give a shit about any of that and is someone that would hopefully be tuned into the message through the narrative, the lack of.. sharpness? would put people off.. idk if I’m Making sense but I’d ask how would they improve it.. maybe you said it snd I didn’t get it..
The best thing about this movie is that you can tell the political position of someone by his opinion on it. It supposed to make us talk about the imminent threat of climate change, but the fact that half of the critics not even mention that, instead they focus on nonsense, is the capital prove that this movie is so on point.
No, just because someone found the script boring, or the acting terrible, or the punchlines not well-executed...it doesnt mean they deny the importance of the message. I think people like you who make everything political and do not want to listen to the technical viewpoints is exactly the kind of character that should be parodied in the movie. Maybe he found it a dud cause it just didn't make him excited. You people are always caught in the identity politics. There are different aspects to a movie. It might be relevant or it might be accurate, but I personally find some of the scenes awkward or lacking in execution. Leo's acting of the shy professor is a bit irritating. The mannerisms are over-the-top that you can tell he is acting. Jennifer Lawrence has the same deadpan face she has in every other movie. Some scenes you figure they wanna be funny, but when the punchline comes, it just ends up anticlamactic...etc...unless there's some higher meaning im supposed to understand, the movie is okay at best.
@@xavieraboltiador1958 The message of the movie is highly political. And, yeah I can imagine you watching the movie being a right-wing nut job, suffering in every scene.
You're point that the message slaps you in the face is great. Direct quote from the movie was "maybe the end of the world isnt supposed to be fun"

Exactly, it is not meant to exaggerate, but to accurately depict the craziest phenomenons in our society today
I grew up in Texas surrounded by the ridiculous religious culture, (like people who actually sent their money to tv evangelists like Jim baker), and then I moved 1500 miles away from that awful state and it was pretty cool for several years but now it sees like the internet has made the entire country a haven for grifting evangelists…
Whether political or religious its all just a great big awful exercise in willful ignorance, and this movie did a great job showing just how ridiculous it is.
@@Mixima101 And dumb people still hung up on thinking movie about "covid"
I think the fact that reviewers and content creators let the political perspective of the director influence their review echos the message of the movie.
People care more about their personal political agendas than real impactful things, messages, narratives, or stories.
Not liking "Don't Look Up" does NOT mean that one disagrees with the message of the movie or "doesn't get it."
I absolutely agree. I knew watching this movie that people would not take the message to heart and instead feel attacked if they leaned more to one side than the other. You are so right that it completely validates the movies point.
He felt attacked lol
It’s not a comedy. It’s essentially satire
It’s not advertised as a comedy, it’s there for support.
I watched it last night and thought it was terrible just an awful movie
It’s a good mix between comedy and existential dread
> The only things I think he missed was that I don't think the rest of the world would sit on their hands letting America do whatever
Actually, the movie doesn't dwell on this idea as much as it could, but it does address this.
Satire is not the same as comedy per se.
I love that the film hit so close to home. In the 70s perhaps the absurdity was a few decades away. Now, it's all around you, all the damn time.
The best thing about the film is that predicts its own reception, completely split down the middle. Can't beat that for truly brilliant satire.

While that movie is incredible and depressive, Don't Look Up actually offers some sort of hope. We know the way forward, we just have to focus. This movie is an affront to pop culture, which judging by your book case, you took personally.
Let's run with that.... we have to focus... on what? Let's stick to the movie's premise.... space object the size of Everest hurtling at earth.... 6 months.... we listen to 10,000 scientists screaming at us END TIMES..... and now what?
You're the president.... you tell me.

Would I act and somehow try to prevent the imminent cataclysm, or would I be bogged down by banal social constructs which ultimately allows the destruction of everything we've all known? What do you think the whole point of this movie was?
@@hankchinaski_ how can you miss the point of the whole movie like that?
So... how can mistating a problem... not understanding the actual problem and wrangling your script so that it neatly fits a ... political narrative.... meet _my_ definition of a transformative story that illuminates the human condition? It doesnt.
Enjoy your new all time favorite bestest ever satire.
@@bluebaconjake405 what's the title of the movie? What does the movie suggest based on its title? some people looking up... some looking down. No?
it's not only bad satire because it cannot transcend a petty political perspective, it can't even adequately present a functional analogy for what the actual problems really are. the movie tries... and fails. Maybe McKay could have embraced a collaboration with someone who doesnt think like him... then maybe it could have risen to the level of a _Dr. Strangelove_ ... or _Wag the Dog_ or _Candide_ or _Alice in Wonderland_ ... all satires that _succeed_ at illuminating the human condition precisely _because_ they embrace that HUMANITY... the LOT OF US.... are fucked.

I wouldnt say it was awesome, it was a movie that was barely watchable.

@@patricity9355 that’s fair.
I totally agree in saying what a movie like this SHOULD do but I disagree in that this movie didn’t do that.
Phenomenal satire that depicts perfectly the reality we live in. Great take on science denial.
Oh boy.. I work media for one of the biggest networks in Canada. I can tell you with 100% certainty that science denial falls on either side in our incredibly divided world.
This movie acts as a conformation bias for so many people...
Yawn.
@Tonberry I really like that. And what exactly are the ideas based on that the idiot capitalists employ in the movie?
What do you mean by that?
I respect your view, and so far usually agreed with your reviews, but this time I dont. I mean I can understand some of what you are saying, I wasnt laughing loud that often during the movie and I was a bit bored a few times. But I also think a lot of scenes were quite good, and it spoke something important. The phrase "dont look up" and the 2 camps of "dont look up" and "look up" were quite brillant imho. Overall for me its like a 7/10 movie, worth watching.
"Idiocracy was a smart movie about how stupid we are becoming",
"Don't Look Up is a stupid movie about how stupid we are"
I cant say it any better than that.
@@shyman3000 Ha! You nailed it.
This movie was actually really great to watch.
Movie was unique and reflective of America. Overall it’s not that funny, but it’s good.
I really enjoyed actually. Personally I’d give it 7/10. Pretty good
I am going to disagree. Not just America, a majority of this planet
I fully agree with you
Media is about clickbait and ratings
I’m amazed at the reviewer as I think there might be 2 versions of this movie, as I clearly dis not see the same movie as he did…

I've watched the film 3 times now. It's a horrifying, visceral take on the nihilism of current human society. It made me feel less alone. I loved it.
Interesting, I came away with the exact same opinion but the opposite reaction. By the end I was just sitting there thinking “of course this is how it will end” which made me feel considerably more alone. No chance I’ll watch this one a second time. It is number one on Netflix, that's pretty good for a movie you tried to run into the ground.
I loved it so much that after I finished it I watched it a second time with my husband.
Finally found an honest review...
Everybody that says this movie doesn't suck are either clueless or well paid. The thing that really makes it bad, is my high expectations for it...The plot and cast was set up for something great. But i am utterly disappointed.
When you realise you’re being preached at, it ceases to be funny. It’s too obvious to be satirical
This wasn't just a movie or about money. It was a message. If you can't see that, well they gave it their best to wake people up.
What's the message? To think one certain way? Humans will never be a collective. You can be awake and still think this film sucked sorry.
Problem is the film hits too close to home for this guy lol

Stranglove.

This movie is not preachy, unless you feel some kind of way...🤔
i think this movie was extremely interesting and captivating and engaging and not preachy but instead realistic and grounded - i thought almost all the actors were fantastic and i especially loved jennifer lawrence. i think it really does matter what perspective you come from - coming from a science background it made a big impression on me and it was actually fear inducing, it gave me chills and i’m still thinking about the ending

I felt like it was a B-movie with A-list actors. I guess you’re saying something similar? It does a good job pushing the message across regarding the state of what people value nowadays and where it needs to be diverted to but if you don’t give a shit about any of that and is someone that would hopefully be tuned into the message through the narrative, the lack of.. sharpness? would put people off.. idk if I’m
