Me too. Just simply amazing. Transports me to better times
No-one, absolutely no-one had such a sweet, haunting tone as Toots had. And he was just a very humble man, but in my view the best harmonica player of all times. Period.
He is 90 here sitting in a wheelchair. He lived to be 94 and is being celebrated now at the 100th anniversary of his birth in Belgium.
A long and very successful career. This would have been a night - in 1949 he joined a jam session in Paris with Sidney Bechet, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Max Roach and others! Can you imagine?
In 1969, John Barry wrote this theme for the film Midnight Cowboy and of course it was Toots who first played it on the soundtrack.
Those lips could whistle wonderfully and he also learned guitar inspired by fellow Belgian Django Reinhardt.
Toots was unique in his artistry and will always be remembered for his joy in making music.
I beg to differ! Listen very carefulkly to the soundtract, JOHN BERRY does it again on a you tube almost exactly the same! its spell binding! i think it was his arrangement that was recordered in the movie. but toots did a good job, all be it more improvisingly.
@@anetajohnson8446 John Barry wrote the plaintive theme, but it’s “Toots” who plays that harmonica. Although finding the names of soloists on film scores can be difficult, reliable web sources give it to him. Strangely, another guy plays harmonica on the soundtrack album. Actual music in a film can be different from the records which were often recorded separately.
@@brucekuehn4031 Crazy musician union rules here in the UK at that time probably meant that when it came to recording the soundtrack, they had to use a domestically available player. The MU disallowed the use of foreign players, and it was the main reason a lot of the best American Jazz players seldom if ever came to the UK clubs. I believe Tommy Reilly played on the album.
I wish I could play it.learned room to move and whammed jammer now I can’t do it anymore.
Thank you for the information. The artist has incredible heart and soul...
I love the little smile and nod the bassist & drummer exchange at 0:05. Says it all.
I love the interaction between them all. Toots looks at them to come in , then acknowledges after each solo.
Yes! And several other smiles and glances between and among the musicians, and you know all is right in the world for a brief moment.
Acknowledging something magical and beautiful is about to happen! 🎶
Belgium may be very proud, one of the greatest Jazz Musician ever lived!
Toots along with his trio just knocked it over the wall with this version of Midnight Cowboy. When I hear an almost eerie, reverberating, melodic harmonica I hear Toots and only Toots, who's with me?
Me
Me too !
He is unique for sure and so is Bonfiglio
It's like if David Lynch directed a short of it.
Yo estoy contigo
I am 74 and in a wheelchair. Toots gives me inspiration....love this
Listening in 2023-one of the best 4 minutes I’ve ever spent!
I cried at the first screening I saw and I weep every time I hear it again. One of lifes triggers.
RIP....., Bedankt voor je mooie muziek en je plezante karakter.
Zo groots . De allergrootste op de mondharmonica. De mondharmonica is Toots.
An Absolute Joy to listen to.
. . . and to view. ☺️
Een geweldige muzikant zijn we kwijt, bedankt Toots.
to hear a 90 year man play this soulfull just warms my heart 'n brings tears of sheer joy!
The older I get the more I love and appreciate music.
AMEN!!
Perhaps a long life of deep experience makes one more soulful. Seems like Toots is a testament to that proposition.
It's now June 19th 2024, I only found this video although I've known his music since the 80's thanks to UA-cam, RIP Tooths Thieleman and thank you for the great sound only you can produce
I can feel this. Gives me goosebumps. Man, what a sound; what a film; what a time to be alive back then!
This ...
There will only be ONE Toots, never to be replaced again. Thank You Sir for some Great Music.
Toots preserved his unmatched talent till the very end. A blessing to everyone! Thank you Mr. Toots.
Timeless, priceless, forever...............
The master, how beautiful, OMG, eternal!
Pure poetry for the soul. This is just so damn good
It comforts.
Absolutely Beautiful
A great piece of work! Knowing the story and seeing the emotion that the participating artists take to deliver it pleases me!! Thanks to all !!
I know everyone appreciated the great Toots but don't overlook the fine accompaniment as the trio softly blended in and "followed" Toots with good rhythm. Real nice.
I’m embarrassed and sad that as a harmonica player for 50 + yrs I never knew the music of Toots. I have been stuck on blues harps ( diatonic) and missed out learning chromatic. Now with Stage 4 lung cancer at the age of 67 , I’m listening learning & loving him. At least I’m still here 5 yrs after diagnosed to try to play . I’ll I want to do is meet other musicians and play. Lord hear my prayers, thanks Toots, REST IN SLEEP.
my all time favorite and such a humble man.Had the plessure to meet him at "september" a jazz club i worked at in Antwerp. he played a concert with Jack Van Poll on piano , Bruno Castalucci on drums and Mary Hehuat on bas.
thank you for the music, toots tielemans! RIP
Sensational talent. What a composition
Toots painted the world of music with this unbelievable canvas of sounds that is so emotional, full and dramatic, nostalgic...and everything he played will be remebered....thank you Toots
Woooww really amazing, already old but still able to play the harmonica so beautifully. greetings from Indonesia
So beautiful....
So soulfull.....loved the embelishments...
When I was a little kid I heard the Midnight Cowboy soundtrack on a vinyl album and was fascinated with the harmonica playing and wanted a harmonica so damn bad so I could play this. I finally got a toy harmonica and never could get it to play like Toots did. LOL!
Chromatic mouth harp is difficult but never give up!
I'm still trying to sound OK-ish on a diatonic. I'll never reach Chromatic lol even though I have one lying around.
I just saw the movie again , I seeing it back in the early 70s and this harmonica tune I never forgot ,great movie and tune👍🏼
The bitter-sweet love song and movie. I can hardly bring myself to watch again... Thank you x
Whether accompanied by a trio or by an entire symphony orchestra, Toots was the greatest.
The look he gives to the pianist at 2'05" - priceless. Fantastic performance.
Toots....you are not dead....people like you never die.....

Very true. People like him...beautiful and brilliant souls never truly leave us. I feel the same way about my brilliant father who passed unexpectedly in 2020. He was a music lover too.
Aside from being an extraordinary musician, he is a beautiful soul. The warmth of his music is also seen in the warmth of his person.
so very true!
Nothing can replace old school Love, Heart and Soul!! For the world no longer turns in that direction anymore ....
Why am I crying. So haunting and beautiful. R.I.P. and thank you
Legendary great harmonicist ... R.I.P
I so love this performance; very moving to me-Toot’s rich artistry in his 90s, his band members faces of love and joy, and the beautiful Midnight Cowboy theme.
This is one of my all time faves. Rest in Power Toots, your beautiful gift of music will last forever.
Besides his outstanding musicianship...., he was a wonderful human being....!!! GOD BLESS HIM....!!!

Worth noting that the bass player excelled in this song. Each musician did. Just magic.

Mrs. Phyllis Stephens
I know. :)
what a joyful band, thoroughly enjoying each note
Toots RIP. thanks for the memories.
I used to hear my departed mother whistle this tune in the 70s. I didn't know the name of the tune and now more than 40 years later I'm discovering the name.
The pianist here is just beautiful on the keys. The chords he uses are divine. Hein van de Geyn on bass is excellent. The drummer is just keeping things together.
I first heard this guess it was on Muzak in my high school office my Sr. year '77-'78 when I was a runner delivering messsages to teachers' classrooms. I was just gettng into jazz like Chuck Mangione so I liked this tune. I also never knew the name until just a few years ago. I was thrilled.
Tuve el privilegio de verlo en vivo en el "Montmartre Hus" de Copenhagen. Con la humildad de su genialidad.
Masterpiece! I love the original but this is even better!! I was so lucky that I could see you live in Tokyo in 2011…

TOOTS is dood, zo intriest, zo'n mooie muziek, gevoelig, grijpt naar de keel, het huilen staat bij nader dan het lachen, gelukkig zijn er de platen......................
Requiescat in pace Toots Thielemans (1922-2016).
