Geometrically the differential equation says that at any point (x, y), the slope dy/dx of the solution at that point is given by f(x, y). We can indicate this by drawing short line segments through the point (x, y) with the slope f(x, y). They represent qualitative behaviour of solutions.
The collection of all such line segments is called slope field or direction field (slope fields with arrow heads) for the DE.
