  • The first is a Czech Military key, smooth quiet action. The second is the popular HK708 by HiMound, a solid key and favoured by many. The third is the Kent Brass 'Hand Key'. Lovely action and easy to use. Available as a kit or built.
As you can tell, I'm a big advocate of straight keys. I am a member of Fists, the international Morse preservation society and the SKCC, the Straight Key Century Club.

Damn never even knew there was a niche about morse code thingies at all, but seems that you’re good at it! 👍

I found the Kent key has a heavy bar which, amazingly, slows down the action due to its inertia. Also we were taught not to use the fingers for sending but the wrist. But a great video. 73

Really good SK cw! I have the Czech key and surprisingly good it is too. I also have a Kent but mine is on the steel base and it gives it a very different feel. You have a great fist. I better get practising!

In case of to send the long
MSG n long time. It is better using the wrist and fingers tip and feeling the
sense of the short code, long code and intervals.

I have a couple of Russian keys, a J38, and two Clansman - one leg key and a bench version.
Be nice to use them sometime.

Very impressed with Czech key...nice action. Like the High Mound but still can't get used to the height of the key. Do other Czech users rest your forearm on table or not?

Hi, in doing my research of straight keys I found your video and the Kent is interesting to me (beginner here). I came across an online review in which the person had posted a video of his Kent in use, and there was noticeable clacking - that is not appealing to me. After watching h your video, however, I heard no clacking. Could you offer insight as to why one might clack and the other doesn’t? Could it be the change in ownership of the company? I want to make sure my first purchase is of a good straight key. Thank you!

Hi MW. Thanks for the question. The ‘clacking’ you hear is from a wider gap in the contact. A closer gap and you get reduced noise. 73 and good luck in your search.
