    $199 in 1980 is $642 in 2022 USD. So while I agree with Lee, you could also argue the price hasn’t actually changed much at all over the years since Dano is selling these between $600 and $700.

    Regarding Lee’s comments about the stability of the screws under the bridge, I’ve owned a number of 50s/60s Danos and Silvertones, and the screws have remained stable over the years. The bigger issue with the bridge has been intonation with the rosewood saddle, which Danelectro has improved by using individual saddles.

      I agree, stuff like this always makes me chuckle, they work pretty well in the construction industry, I think your guitar will be OK.

      My first guitar was a ‘64 Silvertone 1457 that my dad paid $15 for in 1978 (still have the guitar). Three screws hold the neck, three on the bridge, no truss rod adjustability. Plays great. Holds tune (we did upgrade the tuning machines back in the ‘80s). Still a great guitar.

      @McSlobo 2 роки тому +1

      Yup. Les Paul's tailpiece may be several millimeters above the body in which case there could be much more torque against the wood from the string pull than in these Danelectros with much lower string attachment. Therefore the three wood screws are surely more than enough.

      I have a U2 about the same vintage as Danish Pete's in a nice pink sunburst 😂. About 5 years ago, I replaced the bridge with one with the separate metal bridge saddles - better but an awkward bastard to change the intonation. The reason I replaced it was that over time the main flat metal plate permanently bent due to spring tension (I presume). It took me a while to realise how the bridge fitted back on the body too (on those three aforementioned bridge screws).
      Still my favourite electric guitar, though.

      I see what he means about the bridge but you’d need a crowbar to move a bridge even with just three wood screws. The Captain is correct however, they are overpriced for a guitar simply made of Masonite. Doesn’t change the fact that I want one though, they’ve just got a look and sound all their own.

      I got one from Sweetwater Music, and it was a “demo” model (regular $699 got it for $620). When I received it, couldn’t find a blemish or fingerprint on it and it came with a Sweetwater, 2 year warranty. Couldn’t be more pleased with the deal and the sound. My 1st Danelectro, and I’m Very satisfied.

      My first thoughts too! That is a cheap bridge and has intonation issues but it somehow gets the job done and part of the arguably best guitar ever made. It took me years to finally give them a go but you soon find out its probably the most versatile and efficient guitar you can buy and it will win your heart if you give them a shot.

    Totally agree with what the Captain said, I love the look of Danelectro guitars, they’ve got a wild sound and a unique place in the history of rock n roll but these reissues feel overpriced to me. Maybe that’s unreasonable and I’m sure they’re fantastically made but these were historically budget guitars and so I’d like them to be 50% of their current retail price before I’d personally consider actually buying one. I might be way off there but that’s where I think they need to be 🤷‍♂️
    Awesome tones and great to see you fellas back in the room 🎸

      They are made in Korea with a higher spec on fit and finish then they ever had. But I noticed used the price has reflected that so they will hold their value. They also do not go out of fashion so you do not get trapped with either wanting something 'cooler' nor buyers considering your used 4 year old guitar is not cool any more.

    I love Danelectros - especially for recording rhythm and picking parts!!!! Their sound is simply unique(direct and percussive) - listen to Mark Everett(eels) for example. And their playability is also wonderful. Their look and design is ultracool. So I would say they are worth every penny - one of the best guitars ever made. Greetings from Germany.

    Love my Danies . One from the 80s, 2001 and 2010. Never had a bridge problem on any of them. Masonite and plywood bodies. All mine have metal nuts and individual 3 on a side tuners. The oldest looks like Petes but is multi coloured. The others look like squashed rectangle offsets.
    And they have a sound that is all theirs.

    They definitely have a unique, very metallic attack. I remember when they first reissued the Danny's back in the '90s - I didn't like them at all, but I'd probably be willing to give them another go, now that I've matured (somewhat). Thanks!🤘

  • @mattgrimmer9909
    @mattgrimmer9909 2 роки тому +4

    So aside from the fact that they were cheap, there really is a specific difference in how Danelectros sound with the metal nut and rosewood saddle. I’ve setup vintage Davis for artists for many years. I’ve never found the intonation to be that distractingly off in stock configuration. You use the same methods for intonation as you do early Gibson Jr’s, they work quite well with a wound third. For 10’s, just simply have a luthier compensate the front edge of the Rosewood saddle. But, it really is a key component of the proper sound, the metal saddles with lipsticks are overtly bright. With the rosewood saddle you really get the thumpyness paired with the brightness, and it’s part of the magic. I’ve got multiple vintage 50’s Danelectro’s, not a one has ever had a warped neck, and none that I’ve ever worked with. They really are wonderfully designed guitars, in original format.

    • @Roikat
      @Roikat 2 роки тому

      I've got one of the first 90s reissues, which are supposedly quite close to 50s specs, and I can verify what you're saying from my experience. Most of the 90s guitars did have some neck warpage issues, though, but I picked mine from over 30 that were available in the store (I guess GC was good for something) and got the one with the best neck. It works 11 months of the year, but in February (the driest month where I live) it tends to warp toward the strings a bit too much to be playable. Always warps back into place by mid-March, though!

    Lee,
    My understanding is that the first ever lipstick pickup cases came from a military surplus sale of lip salve cases which had been issued to American soldiers serving in very cold countries. I believe this to be true, if it isn't its still a good story!

  • @Baci302
    @Baci302 2 роки тому +3

    Yes, the famous Lipstick pickups have a great jingle-jangle tone to them that's great for 60s rock and roll. Danelectro also makes a 12-string that many professional artists use (e.g. I've seen Warren Haynes play one on stage). It's even easier to play than the Rickenbacker though each set of octave open strings is reversed. That makes it's tone a little different.

  • @benjaminfowler4513

    I think the only issue danos had with the bridge was when they used the rosewood ones, they would collapse like how Pete's was. Afaik that's been fixed with the new ones, along with the intonation issues.

    I tried out the walnut version today. It looked cool, although felt a bit cheap and plastic. It's light, feels better than any guitar other than my Tele Ultra, and is probably the easiest guitar to play. Seriously it's like every thing is just right where you want it to be. It sounds fantastic whether or not it's plugged in. It was $1000cad, so it's a it much but if I saw a used one for a couple hundred or more cheaper I'd buy it right away. I think it's just made to feel like a cheap guitar from the 50s, but it really isn't.

    The aluminum bridge on my US made PRS Vela is a top loader that is screwed into the wood with wood screws, and so is my Telecaster, so if it works, why not ? Nat Daniels made amps for Sears. Jack White used the Sears 100 watt w 6 10 inch Jensen cabinet for the early WS stuff. He then decided to make cheap guitars that weren’t toys. He created a neck machine that allowed unskilled labor to produce uniform necks. He used ladder neck brace because he didn’t want returns due to warpage. He innovated as much as Leo and made a huge impact on young generation of guitarists in the USA. He sold the company to MCA in 69 and retired to Hawaii where he developed a hovercraft to ferry people between the islands who hate still in use today. Now, Danelectro is owned by EVETS. The guy who invented the Fox tone machine fuzz in the late 60s revived the brand in the 90s. As you would expect they now have many unusual effects pedals for low dough.

      Justin Jefferson it's a 56 U2 second reissue made late 90s to early 00s. The matching headstock is the way to tell. The original versions have a natural headstock, 1st reissue is black, yours the 2nd reissue they have a matching body color headstock ✌🎸

    Three screws attaching a static bridge to wood is dodgy now? What am I missing? Unless the bridge itself is soft?
    Unless those screws are basically toothpicks, that's ok.
    Some strats bridges are attached directly to wood with a measly two screws with the bridge acting as a lever.
    Has he ever seen how bridges are attached on acoustic guitars?
