Until this video, I thought I was the crazy one for teaching my dogs all of these things. We can pick them up and "juggle" them; they are so comfortable by carried around or handled by anyone, particularly my stepson. I love your videos and your dogs.

Notice how Waffle goes onto a complete relaxed state after the handling. It really works folks and can save you a fortune on vet bills if you can remove grass seeds etc.
We have had our English Springer spaniel since April...and I can't afford to come and have training with you Charlie but can I say thank you for your videos uploads as really helped me ..even though iv had dogs all my life (rescue) but finally my 1st puppy

Finally, someone who speaks sense for spaniel owners. So many terrible videos out there and this is a refreshing look at what training a spaniel is actually like. Our 6 month springer is coming on a dream but still a long way to go. Thanks for the tips and reinforcing the best way to train spaniels. Now if you can please delete all the other videos out there that give bad advice!

It's such a common trope on youtube for shooting channels to do a video of them shooting every gun in their collection, or guitar channels playing every guitar in their collection. Appreciate the completely different spin on that with the "pick up and wrestle every dog in your collection"
I certainly agree with you that dogs need constant handling from a young age like grooming, teeth cleaning, vets etc. However just be careful as some breeds might find this disrespectful and won’t tolerate handling like this, you would have to be more gentle and respectful. It’s in their blood sometimes not a behaviour or socialisation issue. It’s not always 100% how you raise them. You may get away with this with cockers etc but guardian, dominant & primitive breeds especially won’t tolerate this and you and your children likely to get bitten if you don’t respect them 💙
My 10 week springer has an umbilical hernia. Is it ok to still handle like this. Cheers.
ps thank you for the slip lead recommendation - arrived 3 days ago - she loves it and so do I, it has made a big difference in lead training and is so light.

Poor dog is like “what the heck”
My 60lb GSD is Police Bred. No handling, interaction other than her rough dam. The Force they were bred for sent a team to temperment check them weekly. Now as a Police dog she should not take kindly to any of your handling, not that you're wrong, all my other dogs would have been OK. I've had at least one dog continuously for 50 years. Never a Lab though, more than one with spaniel blood. Fun dogs.
Very odd comment, no such thing as "police bred" the police forces take on green dogs at 12- 18 months, they don't send teams to weekly check on puppies...If you have the dog and not the police what you actually have is a rejected police dog. My 90lb working K9 Czech man killer is completely fine with me doing anything in this video although obviously picking him up isn't practical, i can still do it. Any good owner should be doing most of the above daily anyway to check for ticks or injury. If you can't do the above you're dogs just be bought up badly honestly but never too late to start good practices.

@@LukeK9 She is indeed a physical reject, in that they just took the bigger male dogs. Some were too soft to be Police dogs, they went to Rescue, or air ports. Bitches [too small] were sold [cheaply] to qualifying members of the public. In my youth I' ve competed in Crufts Champion Obedience. I was interviewed for 3 days before 3 bitch puppies were selected for me. BUT, genetically she will not accept being "grabbed" by a stranger. She dosen't know she's a reject, BUT her temperament, and training would have made her a great search and rescue dog. I don't allow anyone to grab her, or pet her. Not her thing. I can teach my own dogs, will never train anyone elses. Same litter, 11 pups in her litter, she was No.9 so she can't be labelled "Police Bred"? Some of her brothers will be, in her head she'd like to be.

Thank you I have always done these things to my animals even my cats, most people think I am mad but I expect to be able to touch every part of my dog. I have just adopted a 3 year old Cockapoo and she is paw sensitive but non aggressive, it is daily work but her tolerance has improved over the two months I have had her - not that she had had any choice in the matter!

My Spaniels are my world, we have a 7 year old bitch and we lost her brother 4 years ago with pancreatic cancer, it broke my heart..😢
But I had cancer 3 years ago and during covid my bitch Sasha became my best buddy as I spent 7 months sick from work..
So we had a close one to one relationship, she is overweight, and have her on diet, using Burns chicken and oats..
Have had her thyroid glands checked and all ok..the vet says he has never seen such a happy dog..
Sashas mum was quite big bones, where as my boy dog was blue roan and had the build of a setter..
Even though she is active and loves a tennis ball...all day long?lol
I still worry about her weight, we Intend to take her to the Philippines in 2 years to retire...I just worry about the flight,,17 hrs..
I would have a dozen Spaniels if I could afford the transhipment for them..but sadly only one..
She walks better off the lead then on it..she is so obedient..
I love your vlogs ..thank you for taking the time to educate ignorant dog owners out there..

I wish I'd done this more because suddenly I've now realised that my cocker isn't great at being handled.. he's 7 months now. How can I correct this as he's still a puppy so hoping to get it back so he's not aggressive when touched around the back..
Thanks! I pick up my pup like that all the time and people look at me strangely, but he kisses me while I'm holding him, so I don't think he minds!
Thank you for this! I always tell my wife to stop "affection abusing" our dog, but I'll stop now because what she does is basically what you're doing! I know desensitising them to being handled is important but didn't connect the two things.

Okay.... I have a terrier cross and my brother has a pug.
The first time he told my dog to get out of his car - to which it didn't obey because he is stubborn and gives a s**** what other people say I told him to grab it by the scruff and just lift him out he was shocked. 😂😂😂😂 But that's awful! Doesn't it hurt him? As soon as he did and noticed it was fine I could see the wheels turning. He spoils his dog way too much!
If one plans to take part in a dog show, or an exam for breeding, the dog must be used to getting handled like this. Imagine a judge in the ring being growled or snapped at, that would be the end with any one of your dogs in a ring with this specific judge. 😮
But also training for the vet is important, because you don't want your dog to be even more intimidated by the veterinary exams when sick or in pain anyhow. Also, in Germany we have a test for accompanying dogs. It's named "Begleithundeprüfung". Here too, the dogs must be able to be safely handled, without showing signs of aggression or anxiety. And the exam for service dog teams are even harder to pass. Strangers dressed up with a full face mask for motorcycling, a stick in the hand, and yelling ferociously while approaching the soon to be service dog and his handler, then touches and pushes and tugs and lifts the dog, while the service dog isn't allowed to even grunt. This would disqualify the dog as service dog immediately, even if he had passed everything else perfectly.
The earlier you start to check them out, the better. Although I never picked up a puppy by the neck when it was over 6 weeks old. But I especially vet-trained all my dogs asg€ff puppies already. They later showed their paws on command, their mouth, their ears, etc. I never had a problem with a dog not wanting the ears and teeth cleaned, or the nails cut. My male dogs showed mouth licking when unknown people held their tail up, but they never growled. I wonder why only male dogs reacted this way. Having said this, I must add, that I do think it's funny to watch the shorty on UA-cam, showing a drama queen bulldog pretending to pass out as soon as her owner touches her nail with the nail cutter. 😅😂🤣
great video and the first ive seen on this topic. I have a 11mo jack russell and I had been doing this with him since i got him at about 10 weeks. I wasnt told to I just thought it was a good idea that he get used to being handled in many different ways. It has paid off tremendously as now he can be handled in any which way, grabbing legs/paws, checking ears, picking them up in different ways, he's completely unbothered and happy for it all to happen. it really does make a difference.
Phew! Have been doing a lot of that. Clarence, Spanador, now 3 ½ months and flings herself around the kitchen and garden. Have been told she sd have 2 x 15 min walk per day re joints and saving on vets fees when she is older - does the walking/exercise time seem about right to you. I sometimes wonder if taking her for a longer walk would be better than her aerobics and flinging herself about.
I LOVE THIS! Is there any video you have on how to handle puppy chewing on your hands and such? I hear many mixed types of advice on this.
Great training just wish I was this sooner! my cocker is now a year and a half and unfortunately we didn't do this with him when we was younger. he has recently started biting back ( gently so wouldn't leave a mark) when he's treated toughly. this is of course a concern as he's such a great dog and has a lovely temperament. any suggestions of what we can do to untrained this?
