Guys, you're listening to a very underrated musician right here. She plays piano, keyboard, flute, clarinet, and percussion. "You Remind Me" is SO worth a listen. Great reaction!
Patrice was a childhood piano prodigy and was an accomplished jazz artist before branching out into disco and r&b. She also wrote, produced and played multiple instruments on all of her songs. She's still alive and working as a musical director and film composer. Another similarly talented woman to check out is Angela Winbush (Angel, Your Smile, I'll be Good)
LOL... you took the words out of my mouth. She broke barriers for women in music. Good suggestion for Angela Winbush. Add Anita Baker and Chaka Khan so we can hear all 3 songs named Angel.
Yes indeed, Will Smith sampled this for "Men In Black". First, it's PATRICE, not PATRICIA. She's a jazz pianist who put out a lot of solo albums before crossing over in 1982 with this hit. This was her only song to hit the Billboard Top 40, but she had several other R&B hits, including "Haven't You Heard", "Feels So Real (Won't Let Go)", and "Watch Out". P.S. You make this look GOOD. ;) Bit o' trivia - the sax player's name is Gerald Albright, who worked with talented artists as diverse as The Temptations, Anita Baker, and Olivia Newton John. He's also toured with Phil Collins, Whitney Houston, and Teena Marie.
When Gerald Albright's debut album came out I bought it just based on seeing his name on all Patrice's albums, before I'd even heard anything from it. Six months later when radio was playing his version of "So Amazing," my friends were telling me to pick up the album. I bragged, "Oh, I got that six months ago..."
You should’ve been in the clubs in the summer of 82 when this song was released! You would’ve thought a revolution was going off a song with a clap and a bass line like that. Clubs were playing it twice a night because the floor was so packed. You either ran and got a spot, or you didn’t get on it
It's Patrice not Patricia. She the musical director of many of the music award shows you've watched. She's also an outstanding keyboardist. Early 80's baby!!! Thank you Amber!
Many of of Will Smith’s biggest hits are his “modernizing” R&B classics This one, for Men In Black. Summertime is Kool and the Gang’s Summer Madness Miami is “And the Beat Goes On” by the Whispers Wild Wild West is “I Wish” by Stevie Wonder
a few more 'Getting Jiggy With It' sampled Sister Sledge He's the Greatest Dancer throughout Will 2k feat. K-Ci sampled the Clash - Rock The Casbah throughout
Patrice Rushen was a dancer on "Soul Train" in the very early seasons when she was a teenager. She had an afro then. Her 1st couple of albums were mostly instrumental jazz where she played piano & keyboards. Some other recomendations for female Friday are Phyllis Hyman, Bobbi Humphrey, Millie Jackson, Alice Coltrane, La India, Honey Cone, Minnie Riperton, Syreeta, Abbey Lincoln, Chanté Moore, Shanice Wilson, Klymaxx, Exposé, Betty Wright, Brand New Heavies feat. Yes! Minnie Ripperton or Teena Marie. Teena Marie's "Portuguese Love" is extremely well produced and is gonna blow your minds. It has that jazzy feel to it. The studio version is perfection. MY favorite Minnie Ripperton song is "Inside My Love". Have you two (Jay and Amber) ever done Rick James? His iconic tune was Super Freak which was ripped for a very popular rap song.
Great rollerskating song from back in the day! Her name is actually Patrice and not Patricia. She is soooo talented! She plays multiple instruments, is a composer, producer, music director, you name it!
The moment Jay recognizes a song and is trying to figure out from where......priceless! Let's keep this theme going. How about reacting to Just The Two Of Us by Bill Withers, or He's The Greatest Dancer by Sister Sledge.
I believe George Michael also sampled this for his song "Fastlove". I think his sample of it was more subtle than Will Smith's. Fastlove was also the song that Adele sang (had to restart cause she thought she stumbled) at the 2017 Grammys as a tribute to George Michael after his passing in December 2016. She reworked the song from a dance track to more of a somber song. You both should check out Fastlove when you get a chance.
I think he sampled it in "Star People" also. I have to go listen. (Any excuse to listen to George Michael! 😀) Edit: Nope! I was wrong. But as I said, any reason to listen to G.M.
I am beyond thankful that I was born in 1969, grew up during the 1970''s and graduated from high school in 1988....I rised above my raising due to music
Yassss!! One of my suggestions!! I know many others love her too... This song is such a funky vibe!! Please consider The Pointer Sisters, Sister Sledge, Chic, Nicolette Larson "Lotta Love", and please revisit George Benson, and Sly and the Family Stone!! Love you guys, keep smiling!! 😊😊😊 ps this song is played in the 80s movie "Big" with Tom Hanks... Great movie to check out!!
You guys should also check out, A Taste of Honey and their song, “Boogie Oogie Oogie. “ It’s from the 70s.... it’s two bad ass black women who play their own instruments... you’ll love them! They also have another great cover they did of a song named “Sukiyaki”. ✌🏼🦋💛
She's an amazing talent! Patrice was also the inspiration for the songs "I Feel for You" and "I Wanna Be Your Lover" written by Prince. He had a crush on her back in the 70's. I believe you've reacted to the Chaka Khan version of I feel For You. She also played keyboards and sang back up for Prince. You should check out "You Remind Me" next. It's another great song by Patrice.
One of my favorite songs. Patrice Rushen is a treasure. So, so talented. Freddy Washington's bass line is classic and Gerald Albright's sax solo is perfect.
Yes!!! She is a genius! A piano prodigy and composer ... She made jazz records with the best jazz artists on the planet as a debut She is a pioneer that made funk and R&B with a great sense of sophistication, she sang, and composed the whole music! She is so good with the piano. This song is just a 10 out if 10.
Her 1st hit was Haven’t You Heard. You might also want to check out Remind Me. Kirk Franklin samples Haven’t You Heard in “Looking For You.” Mary J. Bilge interpolates Remind Me in “You Remind Me.”
Loved this song, haven't heard it years, still sounds as awesome as it Always did. 😎👌 A band to check out I think you guys will love is Jamouraquai and the songs Canned Heat, Virtual Insanity, Cosmic Girl, Deeper Underground, Space Cowboy, Too young to die, Love Foolosophy, Summer girl, Feels just Like it should, Corner of the earth. Awesome songs and an awesome group.😎❤️👌
Agree 100%. I've suggested Jamiroquai to them as well (maybe they'll listen to you). I'd also add "Corner of the Earth" and "Feels Just Like it Should" to your list.
Don't know if it was on purpose but using "Forget Me Nots" as the theme for a movie where a major plot device was erasing people's memories seems ironic, or possible completely appropriate!😁
Thanks for this reaction! More Patrice songs you would enjoy are "Remind Me", "Feels So Real", & "Haven't You Heard". Her jazz instrumental "Number One" is another side, The real side to Patrice. She is a gifted jazz artist first. "Remind Me" is just wonderful jazz and R&B with vocals and she does wonderful with the Keyboard. Remind Me is just beautiful and smooth. A Quiet Storm hit.
Patrice Rushen is so talented and I love this song. She is a very talented musician who can play many instruments. Yes, this is the song that Will Smith sampled so cleverly for Men In Black! Just FYI: Forget-me-nots are a type of flowery plant. It's a classic! 💖💖
One of the great bass guitar driven songs… on those lines you should also check out Good Times and Everybody Dance by Chic, Running With The Family or Lessons In Love by Level 42, Cissy Strut by The Meters, or What Is Hip? by Tower Of Power! All classic grooves!
@@jmco7613 It wasn't really disco. Yes...it was released during the disco era. But "Good Times" (and before it, Le Freak), are R&B/Funk. Disco songs had a continuous thump-thump-thump beat; R&B/Funk have definite syncopated bass and drum lines.

I think this is one of my MOST favorite songs from childhood. I know, I say that about a lot of songs, ha. But this one truly is a standout and perennial favorite; it never gets old. Plus, it rocks. And - that double clap in there. ;) Love that you love it too!
George Michael also sampled this song in his song "Fastlove". Great Song! Also, this song was used in the movie "Big" when Tom Hanks and a woman were jumping on a trampoline!
Another fun fact, Prince had a crush on her and he wrote his hit "I wanna be your lover" for her to sing. Apparently, she heard his vocals and convinced him to do it, giving Prince his first Billboard charted hit song in 1979.
This song reminds me vividly of my 17th birthday and getting ready to go to the theater with my mother. For my birthday, we went to see the musical The King and I, which was touring with Yul Brynner, who starred in the movie version of the musical. It was a really magical night in 1982! Sadly, Yul died in 1985, but he was still an incredible performer when he was touring in 1982. Thank you for that memory!
YESSSS....love this song so much!! I use to roller skate my ass off to this song. Also, her name is Patrice not Patricia. Such a great vibe! Thanks for this one ♥️ Oh, and the chorus was a big dance trend on Tik Tok.

Patrice Rushden also did the theme song for the Steve Harvey show back in the 90's, she was also janet Jackson's music director for her Janet World tour, had her songs sampled by George Michael, will Smith, kirk Franklin etc! She also was secretly involved in helping Prince on his first album. She is amazing!!
I love Patrice Rushen! She’s my favorite female Jazz musician and she’s underrated. One of the first songs that I heard in the radio by her was Haven’t You Heard. I was hooked after that. I listen to Patrice practically everyday!
Love me some Pratrice 💜 Patrice Louise Rushen is an American jazz pianist and R&B singer. She is also a composer, record producer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and music director. Her 1982 single "Forget Me Nots" received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Rushen was the first woman to serve as music director for the 46th, 47th, and 48th Grammy Awards. She was the only woman music director/conductor/arranger for a late-night show titled The Midnight Hour, which aired on CBS in 1990.
Patrice Rushen is my idol and my inspiration as a Keyboardist, Producer, Composer musician. She’s currently a master artist with Berkeley College with her PhD. She’s literally been a child prodigy and a discovery of the lake great George Duke. The song got her on the map but she is a prolific pianist and Keyboardist.
Mr. "Ready" Freddie Washington on his Fender P Bass, strung with round wound strings. He was one of pioneers of funk bass, hammering and poppin. Larry Graham got it rolling, but Freddie was great, and had fantastic tone. Freddie wrote this song too. He wrote a lot of great songs for Anita Baker, Whitney Houston and many others. This has to be one of my favorite old school funk lines to play. Patrice has a wonderful voice and was an incredible pianist. Some of her jazz work will floor you. Just a great combination of talents here.
Patrice Rushen besides being a beautiful African American, she's a awesome Vocalist, Songwriter, and top of the line musician. She doesn't play Bass on this song, Freddie Washington does, but she plays on a lot of her other songs. Her song and Her are Fire!✌️
I can’t hear this without thinking of the Tom Joyner show, and remember rocking out to that killer bass line in the loading dock where I worked. I also immediately think of Mary Jane Girls “All Night Long”.. and then I get a whole playlist hittin me with One Way- “Cutie Pie” and Maze- “Joy and Pain”.
Since you both like this one check out Robin S - Show Me Love, Sheila E - Love Bizarre, Evelyn Champagne King - I'm In Love, Invisible Man's Band - All Night Thing and Gibson Bros - Cuba. Thank you for playing this song!! You two ROCK 🎶🎶🎶
Nice reaction! Great artist! I cover my phone at the beginning so I don't see the title and so I don't know yet which artist and which song is coming up. Jay's look on his face was very interesting as he found out where he knew the song from. 🙂 It's about time you get to know the group Chic. The name of co-founder (and record producer, songwriter, musician, composer, arranger and guitarist) Nile Rodgers may sound familiar to you. CHIC - Le Freak 💃🕺
Patrice is a jazz artist, she played wit Jean-Luc Pony in the early 70's, this song was released in 1982 this from her second album, sampled for the movie Men n Black starring Will Smith in 1996.
Ooh, you guys would definitely love to get into more of her music. She's a musical genius, up there with the likes of Prince and Quincy Jones, and such. She's not only a songwriter, but a consummate music composer. Please react to the following of her songs: "Haven't You Heard" "Settle For MY Love" "Remind Me" "Feels So Real (Won't Let Go)" "Get Off (You Fascinate Me)"
Patrice is not just the vocalist here. That's her on keyboards, she also co-wrote it with the bass player "Ready" Freddie Washington, and produced it too.

Underrated? Maybe by those who either weren't around at the time or simply weren't paying attention..
Rbl posse made a killer g funk mix with that beat🔥 the sample is how I found this song, timeless🔥🔥🔥

I love Patrice Rushen! She’s my favorite female Jazz musician and she’s underrated. One of the first songs that I heard in the radio by her was Haven’t You Heard. I was hooked after that. I listen to Patrice practically everyday!
Love me some Pratrice 💜
Patrice Louise Rushen is an American jazz pianist and R&B singer.
Patrice! This song has been played everywhere for decades! You have to have heard it!!
The newer artists always sample the old school artists because it's real, genuine, classic music. So good, that they simply must sample it!
This record was HOT 🔥 on the disco dance floors back in the day. I remember smiling through the whole song while dancing to it
Put the 12" version of this song in your playlist it Slaps even more and with more Sax.👏👏👏
Super cool, chill and smooth song. I love the sound of it.
Give Angela Bofill’s “I’m On Your Side” and “I Try”. Such a distinct voice from a beautiful lady
this is another song I could put on a loop and listen to over & over
That Freddie Washington bass line tho.....woooooo!
Great bass line! Big hit.
Patrice Rushen besides being a beautiful African American, she's a awesome Vocalist, Songwriter, and top of the line musician. She doesn't play Bass on this song, Freddie Washington does, but she plays on a lot of her other songs. Her song and Her are Fire!✌️
Patrice Rushen is so underrated it’s criminal. Check out “Look Up”, “Remind Me”, “Settle For My Love” and “Haven’t You Heard”.
I'm such a fan of Patrice Rushen that when I went to see her in concert in 1980, that's when I decided to name my oldest daughter Patrice.
You should also react to Mtume "Juicy Fruit" which is another 80s classic that's been sampled a lot.
Evelyn Champagne King (SHAME) this is one of her biggest hit check this awsome song it's epic.
I always loved that they unplugged the guitars and turned up the base and let him go FUNKY
So glad you are doing this extremely talented lady right here!
In case it hasn't been said already, the bassist in this song is the legendary "Ready" Freddie Washington
Awe I love this, an 80s favorite 💕☮️
thanks for all these tunes that we danced to and loved all those years ago (I am 64) The best of times....
One of my favourite songs from my childhood
Patrice is a jazz artist, she played wit Jean-Luc Pony in the early 70's, this song was released in 1982 this from her second album, sampled for the movie Men n Black starring Will Smith in 1996.
Ooh, you guys would definitely love to get into more of her music. She's a musical genius, up there with the likes of Prince and Quincy Jones, and such. She's not only a songwriter, but a consummate music composer. Please react to the following of her songs:
"Haven't You Heard"
"Settle For MY Love"
"Remind Me"
"Feels So Real (Won't Let Go)"
"Get Off (You Fascinate Me)"
Patrice is not just the vocalist here. That's her on keyboards, she also co-wrote it with the bass player "Ready" Freddie Washington, and produced it too.
Pronounced 'Patreece'. Glad you got to Patrice Rushen. 'Haven't You Heard' is another hit!
Bass! I had this 45 and played it over and over and over! LOVE THIS SONG!
This song was the businezz in high school...watching you too enjoying this is so much fun!
Excellent choice. What a groove
I loved dancing to Patrice Rushen back in my disco days.
