Totally agree, living in the US I had no idea like everyone else. The most unique rock story there is, and South Africa let him finally live the dream. Thank you !!
I saw Rodriguez in Sydney, Australia many years ago. Just him and his guitar on stage in a theatre where the foyer ceiling had fallen in after a weekend of heavy rain. We entered via the stage- door and the show went on. Stunning. Formidable. Raw talent at its best. RIP Rodriguez. So pleased that you finally had the recognition you deserved. The world will miss you.
University life in South Africa in the 80's would never have been the same without the music of Rodriguez. RIP Sir, you will be missed but never forgotten!
Rodriguez was an absolute legend, i grew up with his album Cold Fact and we knew all the lyrics from an early age (as did many generations of South Africans). Imagine how much more he could have given the World if he didn't have to stop.
So sad. I grew up in the 70/80’s in New Zealand as a teenager listening to Cold Fact. Loved his music so much. I remember sharing his story with some Detroit friends who hadn’t heard of him. Your music plays on in our house and in my head❤️
Rodriguez was big in the Suburbs of Sydney Australia back in the late 70s and I was lucky to see him when he toured back then. Also got to see him one last time in Sydney in 2013. Its sad he is gone and sad he spent all those years working hard physical jobs not knowing how popular he was out of the US. However, luckily due to South Africa he was truly recognised for his talent. RIP Sugar Man!
So sad to hear of the passing of this legendary soul. I learned about him through the documentary, Searching for Sugarman - the beautiful, incredible story of this legend. ♥️
We have zero talent acts forced down our throats while those with genuine gifts to offer are rejected. We had greatness in the shadows here in Detroit. Makes you wonder how many more there are. RIP Sixto - you lived a great inspirational life.
Very true . The music business is only interested in money making and pushing pop mind less music to yung people. Music on the real contest is very powerful poets are people that create awareness and wakeup conscience on yung minds generations can be shaped true music political systems know that and they don't like it is a very powerful weapon to fight tirany and oppression .Rodriguez was silent becouse of that. His name was Rodriguez but he was a American from Detroit great poet and fighter for social justice.
I remember seeing Sixto reading the Brit music mags at Wayne State’s Purdy Library, not knowing who he was until far later. He was revered overseas, but ignored Stateside. Check out his track “Inner City Blues.” RIP
Rest in Peace Sixto... from an admirer from South Africa. Yes its true, he meant so much to so many of us in South Africa. A true legend, even though so few knew of such for so long. I was there at his fist concert in South Africa. I love the man.
I remembered finding out about him in 1977 aged 17. He was like a blast of searing truth. He was very big amongst us Aussies and Kiwis as well as huge in Safferland
The Rodriguez album Cold Fact was big here in Sydney, Australia back in the 1970s, his songs were pure poetry, rarely does music reach into your chest, squeeze your heart and infect your soul....this certainly did !
I grew up near Detroit's and had never heard of this guy until a few years ago. It was very interesting that some young kids in South Africa found one of his albums somewhere and plucked him out of obscurity.
Sixto will never be forgotten for the work he played and sound and music he wrote.his music had that dylon sort of sound with words but more jazzed up with that detroit sound.Godbless you Sixto you may be gone but your music and sound lives on in our hearts forever.Godbless You man.🕊🦋🕊🕊🦋🕊🦋🕊🦋🕊🦋🕊🦋🕊🦋🕊🕊🙏🕊🙏🕊🙏🕊🙏🕊🙏🕊🙏🕊 🌹🌻💐💜🦋🕊Rest In Peace 🙏🕊
Saw the Doc and give thanks to the guys who brought him to the light. God bless you Sixto Rodriguez, I believe you were peaceful from what I saw. RIP Sir Rodriguez. I was touched by your story.
Sixto ..... The most famous American no one ever heard of , yet he was a legend in Africa. They loved him more than Bob Dylan . He was so humble that when South Africans heard he was still alive and working as a day laborer , they set up a huge comeback concert for him and they surely showed him he was missed and loved . When Sixto arrived the night before the concert , he would not use the hotel room bed , he slept on the floor. Humble as a Franciscan monk . He is flying high now. RIP Sixto ' Sugarman ' Rodriguez ! 💚☮️

Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and Rodriguez, were always my favourites as a teenager. Thanks south Africa for the doco. Much appreciated in Australia , Rip Sixto
I am so very grateful to have seen "Searching for the Sugar Man" - a very moving documentary, which prompted me to fly to Seattle to see Rodriquez live. Brilliant concert in a small venue and one of my favorite highlights in life. Sixto was lovely, gentle, grateful, humble and a very talented man. I pray that the last few years of his life allowed him to see how much he was appreciated and loved. Fortunately, I live near Detroit and visit his neighborhood frequently....which he is honored by a huge mural....long live the spirt of the Sugar Man!
I think he will always be missed he was an American icon the irony is he found his Fame in another country but at least everyone in that country loved him unconditionally as he loved everyone else
It actually meant more to south Africa where he waa a superstar and an inspiration to the anti-apartheid movement. The USA didn't care until the south African documentary came out.
I can confirm that 60 million South Africans would gladly have him buried here at home - with us.
Thank you for everything, Sixto!

Sad day. After I watched Searching For Sugar man in 2012, became a fan. Wonderful and talented person. Godspeed Rodriguez 💫 ✨

There's so many on UA-cam from the 70s. An unbelievable amount of great stuff.

Go and ask Clarence Savant why he stole Rodriguez's money. If not for his greed, we could have had more music from Rodriquez.
RIP Rodriquez, you and your music were loved by millions 🎶🥲
RIP Rodriguez 🖤 and thank you for your music!!

motown guy ripped him off of his money where he was famous due to Motown singers were up and coming they kinda ignored sixto
I don't know if that's honestly true - how would he have known about his fame in south Africa

I saw him perform playing the opening act for Brian Wilson in Nashville, it was June 2015. It was a very special evening indeed.
One of the most inspiring stories ever. I'm so glad Detroit has kept his memory alive. My condolences to family and friends.
RIP Rodriguez, A Great Musician 🙏
1979 I was given "coming from realty" album. I was 15yrs. "Climb aboard my music and my songs will set you free"...and the have, cheers Rodriguez.

CKLW missed the BIG 8ball on Sixto but Detroit's musical loss was an unsurpassed musical story that was the World's gain. RIP SUGARMAN
As a Safrican he was huge in my music soul.
His music was huge in South Africa and Australia as explained here: ua-cam.com/video/zrMzObc1xYs/v-deo.html
Hate the over used "musical genius" term but Sixto was the real deal. South Africa just happened to realize this before the rest of the world did.
2:11 Sixto was guest speaker at college Detroit Music class
Him and Robbie Robertson same week….

Now along the streets His spirit will always roam freely
