This was one of the first movies to bring PTSD and veterans rights issues to the forefront of American society. If we learned one good lesson from Vietnam, it was that the soldiers are not to blame for where they are sent and the actions they are forced to take(outside of obvious war crimes of course).
Yes, but at a certain point, every man must be responsible for their part. You cant just say you were following orders. Take a stand, refuse to go, yes there will be a price, but there is a price for everything. And the price for going and fighting forever wars for an excuse to keep printing money is very very high.
David Peter I’ll go to rolling thunder in Washington DC every year and walk the Vietnam wall . I just missed the war because of my age by a few years . I feel sorry for all my brothers that went over there and made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. What a shame that all my brothers who lost their lives over there and the ones that were left behind as prisoners of war and nobody want to get them out of Cambodia and Laos. The United States government should be ashamed for leaving our prisoners of war behind.
A lot has to do with the script that Stallone altered from the original novel. In the original novel at least 16 ppl are killed by John. Stallone emphathised with the actual vets of the war and ensured the character didn't kill any of cops. This is where the movie ranks so high above the eventual successors which were cash cows for the studios...

All that greatness is about to be eclipsed by neo-socialism. 80,000 American boys died fighting in Korea and Vietnam to keep Marxism off American soil. It appears they died in vain because social media imported it in a way the Soviets never could export it.

A lot of people "INSIDE and OUTSIDE the U.S.A" Even today don't fully understand what a "MAN or a LADY" whether "HE or SHE" whether "EX-MILITARY or an ABUSED AS A CHILD" the "HELL" (and I do mean "HELL") goes through with P.T.S.D, and you better believe it is an "ABSOLUTE UNADULTERATED HELL"!!! As unfortunately I hate to say it, I know firsthand because I also suffer from P.T.S.D, and all the "DRUGS" in the world today may slow it, but unfortunately it's "NOT A CURE"!! Because no matter what kind of "MIND CONTROL DRUGS" you give that person; "HELL IS STILL HELL!!" Like he proved in "FIRST BLOOD I + IV" is a bunch but there's more to P.T.S.D that goes on with it. Basically like this, as long as nobody messed with him he was calm, but like in #1. SHERIFF TEASLE started messing him for no reason whatsoever. + DEPUTY GAULT. abusing RAMBO, Then all "HELL BROKE LOOSE" with the "STRAIGHT RAZOR" in the JAIL. + #4. "NIGHTMARES of what "TRAUMATIZED HIM" in LIFE. But when nobody was messing with him he was "CALM AS A KITTEN". But as for the "NIGHTMARES" ever ending, well I'm still waiting for mine to end.
Its quite possible, in this movie though never mentioned Brian Dennehys character and the police officer who died were former Vietnam war veterans well. I think while it was unfortunate that he became violent. The Police officer who was probably former Vietnam War veteran himself was trying to preserve the peace and tranquility and respectability of small town and he must have thought if he could re integrate himself respectably back into society after being in Vietnam war why couldn't this guy and thats why told him to take a shower pay more attention to his appearance and to make an effort to look respectable and to move along to the next town. It was just unfortunate Rambo maybe Rambo took it the wrong way as people often do when talking to police officers should have moved on rather than try and pick a fight and the Police officers some of them probably former Vietnam vets who also were probably brutalised by the vietnam war themselves and became unnecessarily violent with John Rambo could have been more sympathetic. That not everybody can reintegrate successfully back into society after such the Vietnam War. The whole situation was tragic but then again if that did not happen we would not have this good action movie.

Honestly, the first movie wasn't really an action movie so much as a psychological thriller with a heavy amount of tragedy and...political commentary that isn't all together right wing and gung-ho about war and violence. A lot of commentary on what the process of turning a civilian into a soldier really does to those who go through basic; what putting said person in a war without honor or humanity or clear enemies does to those who participate in it; and how society (doesn't) handle the consequences of exerting power across the globe, once the soldiers come home and there's no effective way to deprogram them back into functioning civilians and no effort is made to find one. What happens when you take the most effective product of training and put them into a society that doesn't tolerate misfits or anyone outside the norm. One could already see how US society handled that with Bull Connor and black demonstrators; the massacre at Kent State; the violence of police at anti-war demonstrations; and the way it treats the homeless vagabonds, of whose ranks John Rambo found himself in. In the original novel, John Rambo's old CO killed him. Partly out of a sense of mercy, as he was too broken by war and warped by the training he was put through to be re-integrated back into society, left without any sense of peace and always on hair-trigger. So he took pity on him and, at the very least, ended his torment. It was also partly out of a grim realization that he, and the entire military apparatus, created a monster that dealt death overseas indiscriminately because he was trained to and because he had to...and now that monster came home.
This was one of the first movies to bring PTSD and veterans rights issues to the forefront of American society. If we learned one good lesson from Vietnam, it was that the soldiers are not to blame for where they are sent and the actions they are forced to take(outside of obvious war crimes of course).

1982 when society woke up and realized how badly it had treated Vietnam Veterans

That scene at the end where John Rambo breaks down in front of Col. Troutman talking about his buddy getting blown up all over him is heartwrenching.
"They started it all"..Basically this movie started 80's action. Legendary movie which is not even stupid as 90% of the others.

Life is a long hard tough road!
Who among us has not dreamed of expressing our “love” for the “law” in this way?
Based
From success to failure is one step , from failure to success is a LONG ROAD .
It's a long road
When you're on your own
And it hurts when they tear your dreams apart
And every new town
Just seems to bring you down
Trying to find
Peace of mind
Can break your heart
It's a real war
Right outside your front door
I tell ya
Out where they'll kill ya
You could use a friend
Where the road is
That's the place for me
Where I'm me
In my own space
Where I'm free
That's the place
I want to be
'Cause
The road is long and
Each step is only the beginning
No breaks, just heartaches
Oh man, is anybody winning?
It's a long road
And it's hard as hell
Tell me what do you do to survive
When they draw first blood
That's just the start of it
Day and night
You gotta fight
To keep alive
It's a real war
Right outside your front door
I tell ya
Out where they'll kill ya
You could use a friend
Cause
The road is long and
Each step is only the beginning
No breaks, just heartaches
Oh man, is anybody winning?
The road is long and
Each step is only the beginning
No breaks, just heartaches
Oh man, is anybody winning?
It's a long road
It's a long road

Still is
