@@willhoffert3744 yes in that case you're right, but I study medicine in Uruguay and there are clearly some differences, college education is free to begin with, there isn't a limited amount of spots and you enter directly after high school, so anyone has the chance to begin at least. What makes it competitive is the pace and difficulty. It's a total of 8 years to get your degree. When I began there was a total of almost 2000 students, only 800 pass aprox. to second year because of the filters and exams. The whole first year we only study Celular and Molecular biology, which tends to frighten most of the students, we enter the clinical part in the 4th year and then we begin our rotations. So give the old man some credit! lol I imagine the difficulties in the US and it should change soon in my opinion, with how much doctors are needed, without sacrificing the quality of education of course.

True story. My mother was a RN when I was growing up. She went to Med school when I went to college. I graduated college the same year she graduated Med school. Then I went to Med school in the same city where she did her residency. She did a 4 year residency in ob/gyn. When I was a fourth year Med student, I rotated on her service as she was then a senior/chief resident. I was young and care free! She went to Med school, had her 6th! Child while in Med school, and raised her 5 other kids while going to Med school and doing her residency. I still look back….impressed.
Was 33 when I started med school two years ago. I’ll be 40 when I graduate. I have a classmate that is 60+ who is an amazing student and will make an exceptional doctor! It’s never too late and we’re never too old.

I'm 31 and a med school applicant in Japan. I know things are different between us but I've inspired by this video and all these positive comments. In Japan most people would stop you or discourage you when you tell them you want to be a doctor even from your mid 20's. This is very shame but if you're woman, things can be more hard. But still I want to be a doctor. I want to say 'No one can stop me' all time but sometimes I really need help for encouraging myself. I'm glad I found this video, thank you so much. I'm following my dream too.
I'm from Pakistan and things are truly hard here for woman. I'm 32 and I wasted my twenties because of societal pressure to get marry. I didn't get married in my twenties because I was unsuitable and wasn't as eye pleasing to be a 'perfect' bride. I just wanted my time and now I think it's time I should do something for myself. But my ordeal is harder since I grew up in third world country and wasn't given much opportunities. I'm willing though to study medicine.
@@junik.9414 I'm really proud of you pursuing medicine in such a tough situation. I know the pressure. I didn't get married too because I was young carer for grand parents for long time. The part that you said you just wanted your time, I really feel so too. In any situations we have, I hope we will achieve our dream. Take care.
I grew up in a poor home in a small apartment, my mother is a housewife while my father was a janitor at a supermarket, my father was a janitor for 21 years working minimun wage most of his career until he found out he was going to be a grandparent, he went back to university where he majored in recreation and leisure, and he went back and got his JD degree, and at 47 years old he became a Lawyer at a firm. Its never to late to get your education. My dad is our role model and im happy that my children will have someone to look up to. I'm hoping to get to MED school in a few years.
"You're going to be the age no matter what. You have to follow your dream" WOW this was so encouraging to be. I'm being watching all of your videos. They are soooo inspiring. I just applied for a post bacc program.
I started med school at 38. I had been a PA before so the transition was pretty easy. A classmate was 40 when he interviewed. He was asked about his age. His was response was that in 4 years he would be 44, and if he was accepted he would be 44 and a doctor.
I’m 22 and I haven’t even gone to undergrad. I’ve been on my own since 18 and I’ve really wanted to go to college. I knew in high school i wanted to pursue a career in medicine and my mind has not changed in the last 4 years since being out of high school. I am a DACA recipient so I don’t qualify for FAFSA or many other scholarships. I am saving my money now so I can pay for some of my undergrad and not have too much debt before med school. I just want to say a huge thank you to you Dr. Webb for being a reminder that my dreams can still come true.
I am 29 and attempted MDCAT this year after 10 years as a banker and could score 50 percent marks which aren't enough for admission so planning to retake the test next year and get into the medical college to fulfil my dream of becoming Dr. Khan!!! So happy that I found inspiration in you all!
I just wanted to say thank you so much for asking this question. I am 42 and considering this option. I very much appreciate that you did this video, it is honestly very kind of you.
I started medical at age 40; I went to a Carribean medical school and failed STEP 1 thrice. After this, the school asked me to start all over again, but now I can't go back to the Caribbean. Besides, their medical education is nowhere near the standards of US medical schools. And since I failed the STEP 1 exam, I can't apply to US medical schools because of my failure, as my chances are very slim. But In my heart, I know my fate is to become a doctor; this is embedded in my soul. So now I'm studying to apply for the physician assistant school. After that, I will apply for medical school again because being a PA will improve my chances of rejoining medical school. So, I am following this path. I am old. I am turning 60 this year, but my age cannot stop me from following my dream.
I think the real question is do you have the economic stability to study for the rest 5/6 years? Some people don't understand that a 40 years old student has already made a carrier in an other field or he/she worked hard for the last ten/twenty years and came to university just to follow his dream! In my opinion if you have an economic stability go on and follow your dream even if it sounds unreal for other people 🦋
Of course rich people if they don't work for the rest of their life they still have money to live independently. You don't need to encourage these people. Encourage ordinary people instead. Rich people can do whatever they want.

To be "old" is to be more experienced in life. It is a strength. One can leverage the experience in life in anything one does. Like this one can benefit from medical school a lot in many ways. The information one learns/ takes in is interpreted, analyzed, and attached in to the bigger picture with more experience.

I’m 26 and finishing up nursing school this year. I plan on working a few years as an RN before I apply to med school. It is what it is you know 🤷♀️ we can’t give up on our dreams!
sid L CRNA was actually my plan when I embarked on my nursing journey. At that time I felt that medical school was out of reach for me in my lifetime😓However nowadays I feel that depending on my life situation and how I feel after getting my BSN I’ll decide between CRNA or medical school😉
I’m 35 and have been working as a customer care representative for a healthcare company for 4 years. I often talk to people over the phone who are ordering medications at mail order or needing some kind of override or prior approval for medications at retail pharmacies also. These people open up to me about their lives and it really touches my heart and soul. Working in my position has really opened my eyes that people need someone with true empathy and the heart to really be a doctor, that’s my inspiration for considering medical school. I also want to be able to help my family and myself as we are starting to see health conditions spring forth in our own lives. I realize so much now, that if you’re in it solely for the money, you have let down humanity whatever it is you are doing. We’re meant to take care of one another and show God’s love through our service. This is how I want to serve humanity before I expire. God willing.🙏🏽✨❤️
Dr Webb I feel like you're talking directly to me!! I've been a nurse almost 11 years... when you said the age 35(my current age) I knew this message was ment for me!! Lord's willing, I'll become that doctor! I also feel as tho I have an advantage by being in the medical field...

I am 41 and we just wrapped up 3rd year in Medicine...am glad these doctors think age doesn't matter but there are doctors who think it does so if you are old like me and you meet these types, whatever they say about your age, just smile...don't let them discourage you...

I would like to raise my family before jumping back to education! Thank you for this, it’s lovely to see people remaining ambitious in the comments section
I believe the older you are the more tolerant you will be, and more passionate towards patient, more relax and and they can handle stress very well, medical schools should consider the admission to medical schools should be more matured in age and mental stability, I 1000% agreed to people who get to do their medical course 30 years and above.
Thank you Dr. Webb! I really needed this video. I started college late and decided to major in nursing rather than the traditional bio or chem type of pre-med major in case med school never worked out for me. Nursing gives me the stability I sought from a college education and while I absolutely love it a part of me still nags at me to go to med school. I’ll be in my early to mid thirties by the time I can start applying. I’ve certainly had my doubts about my age but it’s videos like these and inspiring med school journeys such as your own Dr. Webb that motivate me to not give up on my goal.
Good question ... for me I put a timeline on my education goals because at a certain age I plan to be retired lol .. SoOo I’ll probably be in MED school in my early 30’s . And I’ll be 30 next year ! 😅

I would seriously consider PA or NP at age 40. That is not because they could not go to medical school and be successful. However, the way things are going, NPs and PAs are only increasing in autonomy and scope of practice. The cost of medical school is growing exponentially. I would say the only exception is if you want to be in a surgical specialty. The opportunity cost is just so much greater.
Here is the problem with your suggestion, yes NP and PAs responsabilities are growing exponentially but in certain places their salaries are capped. Can you imagine reaching the cap after 5-8 yrs working knowing you're doing more and more but can no longuer have a raise yet work as much as a Dr? I say go for med school if that is what they want and secure that bag while you're at it those student loans will not pay themselves. There is also more respects for Drs than nurses. There is an aweful lot of abuse from all levels in Nursing school it is terrible.
Even though I'm 39 years old and I'll be 40 in July I wanna become a pharmacist I just feel so inspired cause I'm a pharmacy technician right so I'm definitely going to follow my dreams ✨️ ❤
Thank you for this video! It's inspiring. I think we forget that we can have 2nd, 3rd and 4th careers in our lifetime and as long as we are breathing, we can do anything. It might be more challenging but shoot, living life itself is a challenge! Breathing (when you think about the whole process) is a challenge! So,its best to just go for it😊

If I specialize that's another 1 to 3 years based on what I'm interested in. I regret not going to school when I was younger, but making up for it now.
I have this feeling, that especially for our generation and the current research abroad, there is really no telling how old we really may get to. We literally could be a few years away from a breakthrough that DRASTICALLY advances human life expectancy. So may as well take the leap right.
late bloomer doctor here , i started med school late, graduated , then took 3 years off because i was not ready for the sacrifice and now im gonna start my second year as a resident in cardio. everything is in the head, everything is relative, this is a fight with yourself not with others, comparison brings nothing .Once you have that speciality title hanging on that wall, nobody will give a damn when you started med school. you dont actually even need to mention it. keep on moving and enjoy the journey!

Being older is a double edge sword when it comes to academics. You will always be defined and categorized as an older non-traditional student with life experience, more worldly, etc. But the good news is you get to live your dream of becoming a Doctor.
I suppose being defined based on your age initially, as the most defining thing about a student, can get old quick. (No pun intended) Your peers will say " oh..THAT woman is 55 years old and JUST NOW becoming a Physician" Instead of things like " She's really cool and dedicated to learning.
I had to come with the terms that I was too old at 35, not strictly because of age, but because I didn't have much of a career before 35, so.... I don't have savings, I don't own a home, I don't have children and I'm not in a relationship. I'm pretty convinced attempting med school would delay all those by at least another 6 years if not longer and it terrifies me. Unfortunately most my 20's was spent taking care of family and I put my entire life on hold for it.

God bless your mom. What a woman!

I start medical school in September at age 27!
How is it going so far?

It is called loans. You can live off of loans while you go to school

To be "old" is to be more experienced in life. It is a strength. One can leverage the experience in life in anything one does. Like this one can benefit from medical school a lot in many ways.

Am 21 and i think am too old for it but now am convinced 😭💕

I want to become a doctor/ I come from a really naive background country with parents that did not went to college and did not know how to help me. So, I at 38 seeking to get my GPA2.62 better and already studying for the MCAT and planning to take it next year 2021 Spring and I am applying for medical scriber. And, trying to do a Masters Anatomy so I can get all I need for Admissions to MedSchool.
I have read comments m 29 this year... I was doing Bachelors Degree in Public Health I think I should go for Medicine... It gave me a great hope... It seems I am still young... I will go for it... Thank You for the great inspiration so that I aspire what I need❤️🙏❤️.
Do it!!
Ty so much fr this video. It is encouraging enough to surpass th queries we have inside us regarding age vs achievement.
I had seen young age successful people unhappy suicidal.,...i had seen old age people flooded with life.
Age is just a no. Acheieve ur goals, don't bother wht other says.
I entered med school after 25, till 31 finished mbbs, had a break due to family issues..now while entering pg ill b entering in my 40s. But i am happy for me. During all th process, I learned how to live happy alone. So move on. Lots of love, All th best everyone✌
started med school 25 yrs old...then stopped due to financial issues, I worked...I came back 32 yrs old...on and off and finally I graduated at 42 yrs old....life brings you to different turns but don't let anyone tell you that age is an issue...
Is it acomplish for me to learn physiology from Guyton even if I'm not a medical student? I have a PhD degree in sports science (physical education) and Im 31years old. I have a basic foundation when it comes to physiology.
Thank you for this video. It's inspiring since I had to deal a whole lot a things during my 20s. Now I'm 32 and I wanna acquire MBBS degree. I was doubting whether I should apply for MBBS program or not? Thanks for motivation
Do it
Interesting and good to hear. Thanks Dr.Webb
Dr Webb, i don't know if i will ever make the move toward med school, but in my heart, i feel like medicine is where i will feel fulfilled. I hope in a few years i can tell you i made some progress because i feel a bit more inspired hearing i should just follow my dreams. I just don't want to fail. But you can't unless you try, right?
Go for it! You can do it!!
40 years and doing it
Being older is a double edge sword when it comes to academics. You will always be defined and categorized as an older non-traditional student with life experience, more worldly, etc. But the good news is you get to live your dream of becoming a Doctor.
I don't see any downside to either so-called "edge" you perceive. I'm older but feel I'm wiser and more confident!
I suppose being defined based on your age initially, as the most defining thing about a student, can get old quick. (No pun intended) Your peers will say " oh..THAT woman is 55 years old and JUST NOW becoming a Physician" Instead of things like " She's really cool and dedicated to learning.
Thanks for this Dr Webb
“No, no, no! It’s never too late to give us ur money!”
I am excited to hear this because am on my way to joining Med Sch at the soonest.
This made me feel much better . I will be in my 40 s . I am a research chemist developing pediatric medicine for rare disorder but I my dream is to treat via pediatric medicine. What is putting me odd is that people are saying how will you pay your bills when you go back to college
Any younger people checking the comments for motivation?
Wow this is encouraging! Thank you
