    About the composer:
Vocal and vocal-instrumental music of young Slovenian composer Tine Bec is smooth and light, but in order to sound like this it requires devotion. Bec (b. 1993) studied composition with professor Jani Golob at Academy for Music in Ljubljana and graduated in 2018. He was member of many choirs during his studies and learned from best conductors in Slovenia. Today he teaches music and conducts various vocal groups. His compositions are often rewarded on competitions, and always well accepted among international public.
    The composer on his work:
The three pieces are based on Gregorian chant and are written for mixed choir (div.). Each piece starts with a melody similar to the one heard in the Gregorian chant of the same name. Through the study of each ictus of each chant I was able to establish the most appropriate time signatures. Improvisation on the chants helped me choose which scales were most compatible with the melodies. These melodies were later used as counterpoints to the main theme in the form of hidden inversions and retrogrades. The text of each chant helped me determine the character of each piece - which are more majestic, which are more calm etc. The melody of Ave, maris stella chant is so brilliant in its simplicity, that it does not need more than a bit of simple harmony to emphasize its beauty. A bit different is Ubi caritas with its more colorful chords. The two female solos, which sing the main melody, are a clear contrast to the otherwise misty chords underneath. The most lively of the three is Cantate Domino. It consists of many complex rhythmic structures and time signatures - a personal favourite of mine. All three pieces have something in common - in every piece I tried to find the one word or phrase, that, to me, seemed to emphasize the climax. The climax is indicated with the use of a sort of double choir technique between male and female voices. I tried to emphasise the importance of the climax with the double choir presented as an imitation of one another, making a kind of double accentuation of the moment.
