    A valid point - the edges in many appliances can indeed be very sharp, so be very careful when removing anything. Levering the motor out with a screwdriver is a great tip, although of course once the motor is loose it will still need to be lifted out of the machine, which is where extra care must be taken. Thanks!

    Excellent video, Rory. Just finished replacing my carbon brushes in my Bosch WFL2060. By following this video, I was able to get it done and the washer is working again! Thank you so much for sharing how to do this. I got the bushes for less than $40 and saved a costly service call.

    Guys, many thanks I also have the Classixx 1200 Express and just put it on its side to take the motor out as the back doesn't come off, actually ended up using a bicycle spanner as a torque wrench won't fit in the gap. My brushes were down to about 4mm after 8 years heavy use. Got the brushes from your website for about a tenner and washer is now running like new. saved me a small fortune and only took 30 mins of my time. Brilliant! I owe you all a pint.

    Thank you so much for uploading this video! Now my washing machine is working again after I changed the brushes. It's so easy - if you just know how to do it. Without your video and your explanations I guess I would have been lost and drowning in dirty laundry. You saved me a lot of time and money and lots of natural resources. Great job!

    You guys are the best!. Carbon brushes went in in about 15 minutes and all's well.
    The only suggestion I have is that on my Bosch, to remove the clip from the old carbon brush fastener, there is a small lever that must be pushed up from underneath the clip. So, don't try to pull it off (so to speak) with brute force.
    Other than that, I just saved £350!

    Just repaired our Siemens Siwamat XS 440 washing machine and your video helped a lot. At first I had trouble finding a way to access the motor but finally figured out that only way to access the motor in XS 440 is through the bottom, not from the back. Now our 10 yrs old washing machine is spinning again like a brand new :) Spare carbon brushes cost 18 € and it took an hour and half with all the hassle and figuring out how to access the motor. Saved a big buck, thank you very much!

    Great video and really straightforward explanation for dummies like myself. As a result my washing machine is working again, so thank you very much. Only one suggestion, working out the angle of the brushes is quite a thing if you've forgotten the configuration and never wrote it down. I had to take it back out and reconfigure it, not sure if helpful for anyone else, but this is how I configured them \O\ the second time and it works a treat. All of this to say thank you very much for such a great video and help.

      Also, I wanted to say that I'd have bought the brushes from your website as you suggest, were it not for the fact that I live in the Netherlands and a local shop actually stocks the part, so it was way easier.

    Really good vid.
    Had the brushes changed out in no time. The front of the Bosch machine is identical to mine but at the back the access hatch is much smaller (for belt change) on mine. I was able to do mine by removing the belt and then tipping the machine on its side so I could access the motor from the bottom of the machine. I was able to change the brushes without removing the motor.
    Your vid gave me the confidence to attempt the job and it worked out fine. Thanks.

    Our Bosch washing machine was having symptoms like a wire was loose. The drum wouldn't turn but when we opened it up, pushed and prodded, it would work again for a while. The other symptom was there was graphite everywhere, inside and out. After researching how motors work, we suspected it was the brushes. They were only about 1 cm long when we took them out. So far, so good after replacing the brushes. Many thanks for the videol we couldn't have done it ourselves without it!

    Candy CNWD136 CNWD-136 had stopped spinning and there were sparks coming from the motor. Followed your guide, removed cleaned and reseated the brushes and it worked fine after that. Only difference is that I could get at the brushes from underneath by tilting the washer back. Thanks for your great guide...

  • @eSpares
    @eSpares  11 років тому

    If you find that the commutator has been scored or burnt it can usually be rectified with some fine wet and dry paper being held round it while you manually spin the motor spindle. However, the cost of a new motor and new brushes can vary quite considerably depending on your make and model of machine, but if you suspect that your motor is experiencing problems then checking it for wear and (where necessary) using a method such as the one above is certainly worthwhile! Thanks.

      Thank you! Unfortunatly, I wan't able to remove the motor to get to the brushes and got a worker in. He ripped me off, stating the motor is broken without even testing it. When I opened the brushes they were completly worn down on one side, and barely there on the other. When I asked how he can be sure, this allone isn't the problem, he said, he never replaces the brushes "because it ruins the collector (?)". Well, I knew I was had, when he stated this. He wanted to take the "broken" motor with him. I said no. Definitly not. Now I'm checking out, if the "broken" old motor is really broken. But it'll take time to get someone to look at it and try it with new brushes.
      Aaaaanyway: without your video I would have believed him anyway and now I know he is untrustworthy at least and never ever to use him again (and warn people, once I have proof).

    2024: Machine 24 years old and stopped spinning. Replaced brushes - a bit awkward as the whole back panel doesn't come off. There is only a smaller panel to reveal the belt with no access to the motor mounts. When you said some motors don't need to come out to change the brushes I guessed my Bosch 2260WFL/04 was one of these and was designed to enable replacement of the brushes while the motor was insitu. I think it’s more awkward than removing as space is tight. However, finally, all is back to normal working. Wife very pleased so thanks for the video. It was also a chance to inspect the belt as these machines are usually tucked away between kitchen cabinets and under a worktop so dragging them out requires some motivation to inspect parts. Brushes cost £12 with next day postage. New machine: £500!

    Thank you for all your great videos. Just a couple of points. I have a Bosch Classixx 1200 and it is impossible to take the back off (the back and sides are all one sheet). However you can access from underneath, albeit very fiddly.
    One extra tip that i got: If like me you find that you now will have no washing machine for up to a week waiting on delivery of new carbon brushes, you can reuse the old ones. When you pull them out you see that one is shiny and one is dull. If you cut the wire that is inside the spring of the dull one, then reinsert the brushes. this will have the effect of pushing them in a little more against the motor. It worked for me and should work until the new brushes arrive.

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  7 років тому

      Thanks for the comments Fergus, just a word of caution. The wire in the brushes has two functions, It ensures a better electrical connection direct to the brush as the current through the spring can produce heat as it contacts the brush that could damage the brush mountings. Secondly if the tips do wear any more they can be pulled through the gap on the housing between the commutator. If this happens the spring can be dragged through and short on more than one segment and damage the control board so get those brushes replaced quickly.
      We could normally have delivered new brushes in 24 hours if you request this on our web site and are in the British isles.

    Great video. Took the motor out of mine and found it had 2 new brushes! One had fallen out so all I had to do was push it back in, and make sure it was held in properly.

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  7 років тому

      If the brush to had fallen out it suggests it has worn away to nearly nothing. Check the brushes are at least 10 mm or half inch long approx and replace if shorter as it will fail again.

    If there were 2 bolts fitted then Bosch consider both to be necessary. You may be able to drill the sheared bolt out and put another nut and bolt in its place. Alternatively use one of the other mounting pegs. Thanks!

    Espares,
    Your video is excellant.
    But note on my Bosch ClassiXX 1200 Express the full back panel can not be removed.
    I removed the part back panel to removed the belt. Then I had to tip the machine upside down in order to remove the wiring Loom & earth. Then I removed the motor with a stuggle because the motor screws catch on the remaining back panel.
    But in the end the motor was removed in order to be able to replace the carbon brushes.

    I used this video to fix a Bosch Classixx 1400. The fix works fine and very happy with the spares. Just for the 1400 model, It took me a while to work out how to get the motor out. The entry point is at the bottom of the machine, so I had to lay it on its side and take off the bottom panel. Bit more tricky to get the bolts for the motor as the space is small to give it a good pull, but it came out OK with a bit of a light tap with a hammer. All went back in easily and the bolt tightening re-positioned everything OK.

  • @eSpares
    @eSpares  13 років тому

    @Shandybrother Hi there. This often happens if you are putting in different types of laundry in the one load. To test if that's the reason, try running a spin cycle when the drum is empty. If it works, you'll need to ensure you wash only similar clothes together. If it doesn't work or you hear funny sounds, it could well be the carbon brushes.

  • @rdavison6669
    @rdavison6669 9 років тому

    Very helpful indeed. If the back does not come off your machine, (ie its not a removable item, by design) get the belt off through the inspection panel at the back and then remove the motor by laying the machine on its side and working from underneath. Its do-able. Used a hammer to lightly tap the motor out once the 2 bolts removed.
    The machine is now running sweetly, and Espares next day delivery did the trick.

    Really helpful video thanks! Just managed to complete this repair and feel great about it.
    For anyone attempting this on a Bosch wvd series washer/dryer. You cannot access the motor from the back panel. Instead you have to drain the machine, fit retaining bolts and access it from underneath. I had the machine on its side. Also, You also cannot completely remove the motor without dismantling other parts but you can remove one bolt to turn the motor round so you can access both points for the brushes. Although this is really quite fiddly it is possible for the amateur who's willing to have a go!
    Thanks again, you saved me £100s! :)

    Really useful video. As others here my Bosch did not have a removable back. So followed advice and removed motor with machine on its side. Managed the really difficult and fiddle bit of changing the brushes as per video. When tried to put motor back on its mountings it didn't quite go fully on. So thought I would tighten bolts to push it on. You guessed it, I sheared the head of the bolt right off, so only one bolt holding motor on. Done 1st wash at 1200 spin and all OK. Will 1 bolt be enough?

    Good video. I have a similar Bosch machine. It does start by saying remove top and sides of the machine, without any reason why. Not necessary for my model, took bottom panel off and back panel. Is a good idea to spin the motor before putting back as you get a double check that brushes are in the right way around (something which cost me another 45 mins of my life lol). From finding a bra wire had gone through the drum, a huge piece of scale on the heating element and the joys of putting these things in, I have almost had a day in the life of an appliance engineer, and saved myself £££. Cheers

      Hi Dan, as we say often in our replies 'There are many ways to carry out a repair'.
      Some people may be concerned with lowering the machine or even may not have the strength to do so safely.
      Often if you search our channel we may have (and do in this case) other videos on brush removal that may show different methods for different makes that may 'appeal' more than the first video you find so it may be worth looking at other methods before starting. :-)

      Thanks for your reply - the video was the right one and yes I acknowledge there are many different models even within the same brand. I was trying to say to other readers you may not need to take the top off. Following the video I took the top off to find it was going to be from underneath and through the back 'window'. Make no mistake I think you guys are great!

    Hey e-spares; I found your video's at youtube via a dutch forum (talk about networking;-)) Glad to say that i changed my carbon brushes, and guess what, the damn thing works perfectly!!!! And you outta know that i was going to throw it away, because i let my dryer repair, with a cost of €300 as a result :-s. Needless to say that you guys rock... Now i just gotta decide if i'm going to tell my wife about you, or if i'm gonna take all the credit^^ Either way, i'm sure she will be happy as hell!!!

    Thanks for that, exactly the symptoms, exactly that easy to take apart, although I DID NOT observe which way the slant was coming out, but I think I can copy it from the video! Now to see if I can find a shop tomorrow to get the part before christmas and so I have clean clothes this week. But thanks you have probably saved me a couple of hundred euro.

    Great video Rory - concise and clear- you even explained that the commutator is part of the armature! Well done! Just one thing, not sure why you removed the top from the washing machine?

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  7 років тому

      Thanks for the comments, it is not necessary to remove the top but it can allow more light through the machine to help see what is going on (useful when filming).

    Thanks fella great help but was tough, torq screws are a nightmare after trying everything else in the tool box had to go and get torq head wasn't cheap in a set. Also watch when you yank the motor out its heavy and drops down I sliced both hands on the bottom razor sharp lip as I trapped them underneath the motor. But job done thanks again.

    Excellent and useful video. Did this about a year ago and fixed my washing machine, thanks. The motor has just stopped working again so I took the motor off, but found that the bushes were fine although one of them was a bit stiff in the slot, so I made it run easier by pushing the offending part out a bit and it slides freely. However the drum still isn't turning :( what do you think I should try next, please? Do I have to pull the motor out and find a way of testing it or is there a fuse?

  • @eSpares

    On a Bosch (and other makes) if the brushes wear down too much the copper braid becomes exposed and can score the commutator. If that happens replacement brushes might not last very long or you might need a new motor which is expensive as I've just found out. I think there might be a case for checking the brushes once a year. The right hand brush when viewed from the rear can be accessed without taking the motor out right so not too hard to check. New motor cost >£150 online. Brushes

    I've just followed the video instructions which were clear and easy to follow. To start with all seemed fine but the motor has started making a "whirring sound" when turning. I've taken out the motor and re-checked the brushes were fitted the right way (I think!) after checking the angle of each. Are the brushes just bedding in or is there another way to ensure they run more quietly?

    Hi, a large number of issues with washing machines are based around uneven loads. Please try a load with items all being the same weight and size IE t-shirts only. If the issue is still pronounced please contact us. Thanks.

    Great video, thanks very much. I bought a machine second hand with new brushes fitted but one is worn at a funny angle (flatter than the preset angle). I wonder if this is due to it not being rammed home. Also wondering if the brushes are the correct size!

      All went really well. Although my washing machine is a short one (WLX20462OE/18) and the motor is impossible to remove from the back so I had to flip it to the side using some towels to support the drum as %anotherdiychannel% recommended in their video and get it from the bottom. :) But not out of the woods just yet. Looks like my fridge (also Bosch) is about to get out of order - water in the freezer. I think I bought them together at the same time.

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  8 років тому +1

      Frost free fridge freezers can sometime ice up behind the cover and cause the defrost water to stop draining to the back. Check it is not blocked with ice and defrost for at least 24 hours with the door open before suspecting a fault. For more information see another video:

      eSpares thanks for the advice! I've watched that video too. :) Luckily though, it seems somebody simply had left the freezer door open for like a day. Looks in order so far. :)
