Synesthesia is a very interesting concept but definitely not knew. I learned about this as a child in music school back in Russia in the 80-s when we studied Rimsky-Korsakov's "Schecherezade", and our teacher told us that Rimsky-Korsakov composed the Sea part in E major, because he perceived E major key as blue or turquoise. Helene is such a dream!
There are ideas and conceptions that can be associated with music but which do not qualify as synesthesia. This is a very specific phenomenon perhaps analogous to an hallucination in its effect. In Helene's case it would seem pitch related brain activity is getting "linked" in some sense to specific brain visual activities which then is emerging into consciousness. I don't believe much is understood about this. Some of these sorts of curious neurological happenings are explored in various of the books of Oliver Sacks
I don't believe Rimsky literally saw blue or whatever related to a given key but just held a mental conception connecting the two. Helene is literally having a visual event occurring, though as she says it is intermittent
Helene Grimaud is a great Pianist . I follow Her since 10 years in Paris and Auvers sur Oise More recently at Philharmonie for « Water « With Mat Hennek ,She is rare and produce Each Time Émotion by her discrete way Of Being and Playing . God is in those moments Assisting her and giving also something to her Public who try to catch à rare moment of Communion.
Agree that the Liszt Sonata is one of the great mysteries of musical creation....how a human being could create such a marvel of emotional pyrotechnics....
With some pianist friends, we decided, Helene's eyes look the same as the wolves ! Meaning, that pretty :-) The piano music sounds real nice with the wolf's howling, like a melodrama of some sort.
+Christine Rasson I was wrong...she recorded the Dante sonata in 1987 on Denon. Interestingly she played it for Bolet who gave her some glowing praise. I just received the cd and it's quite good.
She played the entire Liszt sonata in her album ‘Perspectives’. Some People here tend to jump to conclusions without checking the veracity of their claims. I used to dislike Liszt thinking that his sonata was too bombastic. Grimaud changed my liking for which I am thankful.

Fritz, it is quite evident that you simply don’t like Helene Grimaud!! You post negative comments whenever you can and these comments are usually about her as a person and not her music. Why?? What did she ever do to you?
What a sweetheart, and what an amazing talent.
Thanks a lot for sharing this wonderful interview, with us.
Thank you both for the gift of this interview 🤍
beautiful soul,...true magic

Yes, Ms. Grimaud appears to be in good health, once again, and in high spirits. She is an extraordinary talent and person.

A good bit of the interview was about wolves. So at the end, to see in the credits that the editor was "Serene Fang" gave a chuckle.
Eine wundervolle Frau.
The interviewer is IN LOVE with her, it's only natural when you see someone as faschinating I guess...

How cute and goddess can she be❤️❤️❤️
Do wolves react to music?
A lot of questions about Liszt. Curious she never recorded any of his work.
+Christine Rasson I was wrong...she recorded the Dante sonata in 1987 on Denon. Interestingly she played it for Bolet who gave her some glowing praise. I just received the cd and it's quite good.

Sorry, I meant to say her 2010 album ‘Resonances’ that has the entire Liszt’s piano sonata in B minor here discussed.

Superficial and arrogant . Boring . Poor girl .
