The mind arises from consciousness, much like waves form on the surface of the ocean. Consciousness, called Chiththa, is the underlying awareness. When a sense, like the eyes, encounters an object [passa], a "wave", known as vinyāņa or chidābhāsa, appears on this consciousness. This wave, combined with the object being perceived [sanya], creates what we call the mind [manas] in that moment. For example, if the eyes see something beautiful, a wave arises in the consciousness, and the blending of that wave with the beautiful object becomes a "beautiful mind." When the object is no longer perceived, the wave disappears back into the consciousness, and that mind ceases to exist. Similarly, if something unpleasant is seen, a different wave arises, creating an "unpleasant mind." When the unpleasant object is gone, that mind also vanishes. In essence, the mind is temporary and constantly changing. It depends on the objects perceived and the waves they create in consciousness. Chiththa, this deeper consciousness, is thought to originate from Prajna, or the Supreme Consciousness in Vedanta. Supreme Consciousness is undivided and is pure awareness, while Chiththa is its differentiated form that interacts with the world.
