The weather in the Med has been bad recently, my daughter works on a super yacht and they have had 2 instances this season & the weather is bad again. My thoughts go out to all involved, don't forget the crew are ordinary young people earning a living before any crass comments about rich people. It's not nice for anyone. I hope everyone recovers well and that those missing are returned to their families - a sad day

The only possible scenario that I can think of is that when lightning struck the mast it must have breached the hull in a major way. Otherwise it should have remained afloat.

No. If you study ship design, mast height actually adds stability, in rough seas. But water spouts are rare and random things happen.
