Jordan got away with a lot that weren't called. They let him do as he pleased because he was the saviour of the NBA, so they thought. Check this out. I was watching a Bulls game once where the Bulls turned the ball over. On the other end Jordan mugs the guy going for an easy layup. They called the foul on the Bull that was hurt, laying on the court at the opposite end. I stopped watching basketball right then and there. For YEARS I heard, "If so and so was a veteran they wouldn't get called for that." It was a disgusting double standard between what the stars were allowed to do, and what the average players could get away with. The bigger your star, the more you could get away with. That started back in the 80s, and certainly isn't something new. If anything, they are letting more players get away with garbage they shouldn't. It's an ugly, sloppy game, but the league doesn't care as long as revenue is up.
the referees have really good eyes. jordan really travelled (the carry rule has just been simplified to travel). there was a moment when he carried the ball before he crossed over.
Sports dynamics can change rapidly. Look how quickly the NFL went from power run schemes to pass happy, high-flying offenses, and now read option schemes.
Actually the travel call is only when the ball isn’t in motion and is being held. As long as the ball is coming down it’s always in dribble and therefore isn’t a travel. A lot of people think you need 2 steps for every dribble which isn’t true.
idk why everyone disliked his comment if that is is 90% of MICHAEL JORDAN'S FAN BASE lol. most Jordan fans never even seen him play and only hear about it on sports broadcasts or watch highlights and if he did something wrong they say things like "ohh its okay, everyone makes mistakes" but god forbid anyone else so anything wrong. bunch of bandwagons
@pannyrocker there is no such rule in the NBA that says you can only take 3 steps between dribbles. As long as you throw the the ball ahead of you without having it bounce above your head, you can do it, granted you're fast enough to get to the ball.
That's not a travel -- it's a carry. As long as you've kept your dribble, you can take as many steps as you want -- you can tap dance if you'd like. The thing about MJ is he had huge hands for a guard, so he palmed the ball a lot.
The call wasn't a travel violation, but another one that I don't know how to say in English, but in Portuguese we call it "condução", it's something like conduction or maneuvering the ball in a dribble.
@SunFlightx No i didn't mean the only rules. I just meant those being the rules for traveling. Double dribbles and carries are separate from travels. Now that I think about it they have incorporated this. Russell Westbrook runs so fast that when he has to slow down really quickly he must take more than 2 steps per dribble. But his dribbling stays the same so it's ok. If he was to slow his dribble down or start dribbling above his waist then it would be a travel.
even a blind can tell it's a travel just by hearing those 5-drum-roll-steps he took w/o the dribble, MJ still the GOAT tho & forever will be i guess.. much respect. ;-)
Michael Oh Yep, i get that Bro, you could definitely take as many steps as you can before getting a hand at the ball to continue dribbling or pick it up to pass or shoot it, it's logical & acceptable of course, We see stuff like like that happens in fast-break situations, where the ball handler would advance the ball by dribbling (as if to bounce-pass the ball to himself) & chase-it-down to catch-up with it, But it was definitely not the case here, as the ball was never advanced & need not be chased-down in any way, it never even left MJ's wingspan all along, he just made an obvious miscalculation as he made his way to the basket, he carried the ball way too long while trying to do the hesitation-move when he should've dribbled it somewhere between those multiple steps he took & therefore called with the Dribbling/Palming-Violation which is correctly-fair. Kudos to the Ref right there. Anyway, as I've said, I have much respect for the MAN, Michael Jordan is still the Greatest Of All Time !!! ~ain't no basketball-violation can take that away from him tho.. ;-)
If Phil didn't go to Chicago. Chicago doesn't get 6 rings. PJ is one of the greatest minds to ever grace basketball. If he didn't go to LA. LA doesn't get 5 rings. With D'antoni. The Lakers are nothing. He has no respect for Howard or Gasol. 2 of the best big men in the last 20 years.
He literally went from freethrow line to freethrow line only dribbling the ball 4 times. He took 9 steps from halfcourt to the freethrow line and the ball bounced twice. At the rate he dribbles the ball he could go the length of a football field and bounce the ball 20 times. And yes he did both travel and double dribble. At one point he took five steps before he dribbled.
This is a travel before, but for now it is not. As clearly ball is not under his palm and rolling on his hands. Michael jordans move is the start of evolution of basketball and becomes exiting and interesting.
@tmanx1 he didn't travel or double dribble, it looked awkward so the ref called it. it doesn't matter how many steps you take in the middle of a dribble. a dribble is down and then up, you could stutter step 5 times in that motion and it wouldn't be a travel. a double dribble is when you stop dribbling and start dribbling again, he did neither.
Absolutely true. When you perform an open dribble, technically you are not in possession of the ball, it's open for anyone....therefore steps shouldn't be counted. @MAMBA24AIR23 it's a very common misconception, even i didn't know this for a while but really the two steps thing is after you've picked up your last dribble. As long as you maintain a legal dribble you can run as fast as you want. That's why if you watch Derrick Rose or Rajon Rondo, when they get the ball initially sometimes they toss the ball ahead and chase after the ball, obviously they take more than 2 steps but it's not called a travel.

@lakerskins21 you can only take 3 steps between each dribble. Imagine running the fast break and throwing the ball too far ahead of you, so you can catch it after 7 steps or something. It's not a double dribble or anything like that, but that's still travelling.
