Dopamine is considered to be prolactin inhibiting hormone. Dopamine agonists such as Parlodel (bromocriptine) are used to manage hyperprolactinemia and menstrual irregularities due to elevated prolactin level. On the other hand, dopamine antagonists such as domperidone (Motilium) are used to increase milk production after delivery.

I always thought it was a given that dopamine deficiency was the leading cause of depression. The problem is modulating dopamine is difficult and dangerous in some cases.
Best cure would be to recreate society entirely because there are too many direct causes of depression in our everyday lives.

I would like to hear her take on downregulation of 5HT1A/2A after prolonged use of reuptake inhibitors. Particularly 5HT1A inhibits serotonergic activity. I want to know more about its neuronal plasticity effects as patients take these meds for years. It's also important to note that immediate inhibition of SERTs does not mean immediate clinical effect as antidepressants take weeks.
Additionally, there are studies out there indicating NEs prevalence in conjunction with 5HT, so SNRI may be a more viable choice.

Suggestion that a key part of the need for sleep is the body's need to make serotonin, which it does in a symbiotic relationship with gut bacteria in the large intestine.
We sleep to first produce serotonin, then to draw it into the body through the extraction of water in the large intestine.
Though it can be synthesized, there seems to be a major difference in the health benefits from the micro made serotonin, and the artificially made serotonin.
Here's some notes on both how important serotonin is and how widespread it is in all living things.
Besides mammals, serotonin is found in all bilateral animals including worms and insects,[19] as well as in fungi and in plants.[20] Serotonin's presence in insect venoms and plant spines serves to cause pain, which is a side-effect of serotonin injection.[21][22] Serotonin is produced by pathogenic amoebae, and its effect in the human gut is diarrhea.[23] Its widespread presence in many seeds and fruits may serve to stimulate the digestive tract into expelling the seeds.[24]
Gut bacteria manufacture about 95 percent of the body's supply of serotonin, which influences both mood and GI activity.

Thanks for the very useful lecture. You mention low dopamine means low prolactin around 5 minutes through the presentation. I thought that dopamine acts as an inhibitory factor for prolactin secretagogues in the anterior pituitary. Again prolactin antagonists are used in some cases of hyperprolactinaemia. Is it in a different context where this relationship is different?

10:00 Couldn´t it be that that excess serotonin is the one produced/learned to be produced during acute anxiety periods? In an acute anxiety period any evitative (disfunctional) behavior is reinforced. When the acute anxiety is over, the learning and the behaviour stays there and keeps producing anxiety, generating a viciuos cicle between learned helplessness and reward.

For many years I've tried to find out a basic reason why we and almost all creatures need to sleep.
So taking a break from physics ...
Suggestion that a key part of the need for sleep is the body's need to make serotonin, which it does in a symbiotic relationship with gut bacteria in the large intestine.
Suggestion that we sleep to first produce serotonin, then to draw it into the body through the extraction of water in the large intestine.
Though it can be synthesized, there seems to be a major difference in the health benefits from the microbiome made serotonin, and the artificially made serotonin.
Serotonin was shown to exert functions in innate as well as adaptive immunity. Serotonin stimulates monocytes (23) and lymphocytes (24) and hence influences the secretion of cytokines. Vascular smooth muscle cells respond to serotonin by synthesizing interleukin (IL)-6, a possibly atherogenic mechanism (25)
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter than has been identified across all forms of life. In recent years the presence and function of serotonin in plants (phytoserotonin) is becoming an increasingly active area of research. Serotonin has been found to function as a plant growth regulator, and a stress defense molecule.May 24, 2017
Although serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) was discovered 60 years ago (1), the study of serotonin and its receptors continues to yield new biological insights of medical relevance in virtually all major organ systems, including the cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal (GI), and genitourinary systems as well as the central nervous system (CNS) (2).
Serotonin is made from the essential amino acid tryptophan. An essential amino acid means it can’t be made by your body. It has to be obtained from the foods you eat.

Why prescribe SSRIs for anxiety. If they increase serotonin = more anxiety.

THANKS FOR THE GREAT PRESENTATION. I KNOW IT IS NECESSARY FOR THE UNDERSTANDING OF MANY THINGS BUT THE MORE I THINK ABOUT IT THE MORE IT SEEMS CLEAR TO ME THAT THE MENTAL HEALTH SECTOR IS ENTIRELY TOO MUCH SO BASED ON UNIFORMITARIANISM WITH NATURALISM. MECHANICALLY FIXING PROBLEMS THAT QUITE RIGHTLY OUGHT TO BE CONTROLLED BY PROPER THOUGHT.

@@DocSnipes The most important thing that I learned from the video is that, messing with any hormone can affect other hormones, and it is very dangerous to use these drugs.
Doctors never try to find out the root of the problem, they never ask what is your diet like? Saturated fats are demonized by big pharma, which are very important for brain health. Eating carbs and processed foods, cause depression, addiction, diabetics.....etc... High saturated animal base diets are demonized, by big pharma.

Why do people who are having a good diet ie eat plenty tryptophane, sill get low serotonin

    • @DocSnipes
      @DocSnipes  Місяць тому +1

There are several reasons why someone might still have low serotonin levels despite consuming a diet rich in tryptophan, the amino acid precursor to serotonin. Here are some factors that could contribute to this issue:
Nutrient Absorption and Conversion: The body requires various vitamins and minerals to convert tryptophan into serotonin, such as iron, magnesium, calcium, vitamin B6, and folic acid. If there is a deficiency in any of these nutrients, the conversion process may be impaired.
Vitamin D: Vitamin D is involved in the serotonin system, and insufficient levels of vitamin D can affect serotonin production.
Digestive Health: The gut microbiome plays a role in breaking down tryptophan. An imbalance in gut bacteria or poor gut health can hinder this process.
Genetic Factors: Individual genetic differences can affect how efficiently tryptophan is converted to serotonin.
Hormonal Influences: Hormones such as estrogen and testosterone can potentiate the effects of serotonin. Low levels of these hormones might contribute to lower serotonin activity.
High Cortisol Levels: Stress and high cortisol levels can suppress serotonin production.
Dietary Composition: The presence of other amino acids in the diet can affect the absorption of tryptophan. Consuming tryptophan with a high carbohydrate meal can increase its absorption into the brain.
Medication Interactions: Certain medications can affect serotonin levels, and dietary tryptophan variations can influence the effectiveness of SSRIs in major depression.
Overall Diet Quality: Even if the diet is rich in tryptophan, other aspects of the diet may be lacking, which can affect overall health and the body's ability to produce serotonin.
It's important to consider these factors as part of a comprehensive approach to understanding and potentially addressing low serotonin levels. If someone is concerned about their serotonin levels, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare professional who can assess their individual situation and provide personalized recommendations.

@@DocSnipes Thank you for such a prompt and detailed response. In Hindsight, I should have realized that some of factors were already explained in your slide show. I must be deficient in one of those 5HTP somewhere, which has hindered my learning abilities! I look forward to more of your knowledge that you are sharing.

WHEN IT COMES TO SEROTONIN, YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT PSILOCYBIN.
LET ME TRANSLATE THAT FOR YOU. WHEN YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT SOUL WE'RE TALKING ABOUT MUSHROOMS.
SEROTONIN IS THE SOUL. THE SEROTONIN SYSTEM IS THE INDIVIDUAL SOUL. SEROTONIN IS THE SUBSTANCE CALLED SOUL.
    YOU KNOW THE OLD SAYING...
CHICKEN SOUP IS GOOD FOR THE 5-HT.
LOOK AT IT THIS WAY. HOW MUCH SOUL DOES IT TAKE FOR A CHICKEN TO RUN AROUND WITH ITS HEAD CUT OFF?
ALL LIVING CREATURES HAVE SEROTONIN. SOUL.
THE LIMBIC SYSTEM IS THE EGO WITH ITS LAST RESORT DEFENSE THE ID.
