  • Chimborazo is the highest point on the planet when measured from the centre of the Earth and climbing it was the hardest thing I have ever done (so far) in my life!
    After checking a lot online I decided to rely on Andean Adventures to take me to the top of Chimborazo. They run the Carrel and Whymper Refuges and they have plenty of experience. My guide Fabián was very professional and pushed me to achieve my goal while trying his best to keep both of us safe - Check out my story to see how it went!
    I will leave links to both Andean Adventures and Fabián's website down below:

    Trip Information:
    Max booked with Andean Adventures, since they have the best reputation and they run both refuges on Chimborazo (we recommend them and Fabián 100%!). They reply very quickly to Facebook messages and they also have an office in Riobamba. The price of the tour (including climbing gear) was $370, since he decided to do it on his own with Fabián, his guide. It would have been cheaper with a partner, but there’s a risk that the other person cannot make it and the whole party has to go back (there’s a very high percentage of people that cannot make it to the top, so this is worth considering). The package included transportation, food (and it was delicious!) and accommodation (sleeping bag provided). María paid $70 for transportation, food and accommodation (2 nights) at the Carrel Refuge; the sleeping bag was provided as well.

      Hey very impressive, congrats to you. I have two questions for you :D first, have you done any previous mountaineering in that kind of terrain (extreme atitude + snow and ice) ? and secondly, was the mountaineering equipment such as ice pick, helmet and so on provided or did you have to pay extra for it ? cheers

      @@kden994 thanks for your nice comment!
      I had no previous experience of mountaineering of this sort and it was the first time I put the crampons. All the equipment was provided by the agency and included in the price. It included the crampons, the ice pick, the coat, the boots, the gloves and socks and the pants and all the ropes and lights... If the weather is good, the main difficulty of this climbs is the altitude. You have to be relatively fit but the way altitude affects you depends more on your genes than anything else. So it is more like a mental challenge..how long can you endure it? 😉. Go slowly and focus on the next few steps rather than the summit... The sucess rate is 50 to 70% for reaching the top. The more time you spend in high altitude to acclimate before the climb the more chance you have to finish. Good luck!

    Hey Guys, interesting video. Thanks a lot. Just one thing. Edward Whymper and J A Carrell climbed Matterhorn together, and in fact Carrel was Italian from Valtournenche 😉

    Awesome video! I am planning to want to summit Chimborazo and Cotopaxi myself in January 2023. I was wondering how long did you acclimatize prior to climbing? Also did you guys have any experience prior to? Thanks!

    I enjoyed your video and the humor. I do think you would have had much greater success if you had done a few preparatory climbs beforehand.

      Hi Donald! Actually none, we had only been to Pichincha (near Quito, up to 4000m I believe, we started the climb too late and didn't make it to the top), to Fuya-Fuya (4279m) and to Cotopaxi (up to 5000m only, not the full climb). Greetings from France :)

    You don't even need oxygen. Are yo climbing a mountain or a hill. And I don't see any mountain gear. You don't even need ice axe to climb hum ?

    • @maximebolut8360
      @maximebolut8360 5 років тому +5

      Oxygen is not necessary but it would have been helpful... Mountain climbing equipment is presented at 7:31 in the video and yes you can see the ice pick at the end of the video. I bet you can do it in flip flop though...it is just a big hill... just don't be part of the 50 to 70% of people that give up before the summit ;-)

      A hill? Lol Chimborazo is over 20,000 feet and is actually the furthest point from the surface of the Earth because of equatorial bulge. I’ve been hiking in Ecuador and even then I could feel a loss of air, I could just imagine this mountain.
