M E R Y L Her character on Teen Wolf is Japanese on her mother's side and Korean on her father's side. This was stated in the show. Mason (the black, gay dude) asks her if she speaks Japanese. She replies something along the lines of "No. I'm also half Korean and I don't speak that either. And I'm getting a C in English..."
Yep. One of the most exhausting things about being Asian. The prevalence of these kinds of things happening is astounding. 😞 I mean, genuine curiosity is one thing... but there's plenty of ways to find out that I'm Filipino without being rude or offensive.
Yeah it's offensive, even to me, as I'm Latino and my family is from Spain (which is actually the origin of the word "Spanish") and Cuba. It reminds of Ryan's video when he said that "All Asians are Chinese!"
Growing up as a Taiwanese-American in the Midwest, I've gotten the "Oh, Thailand???" "no, Taiwan" or the classic "let's guess what kind of Asian you are while you stand there uncomfortably" game. So YES, I getchu sista!! Love your vlogs Arden (& Chewy!), as an Asian American I really look up to you, keep doing you ❤️❤️
I could relate to this so much cause I am actually Indian! Last month I was at the nail salon and the lady asked where I was from cause I guess I had dark skin, I said here America and she said no were are you actually from I repeated again America. Then she was like where are your parents from and I said Canada then she was like where were they originated from and when I said my mom was born in India she automatically went ohhhh I see which really annoyed me. So when you posted this video I automatically clicked it because I've been dealing with racism my whole life and it was refreshing to see someone rant and talk about it so thank so much 😘😘
I get the whole, "Your English is really good!" comment a ton of times. And of course, being who I am, I have to answer, "Thanks, you speak fairly WELL too..."
Yet another well put together, meaningful video from Arden :) you're an awesome youtuber! You don't just sit and do tags and challenges like some of the other youtubers. You're origional and that's great!
I have the exact same thing. I was born in The Netherlands, so when people ask, i just say I'm Dutch. And then they ask, no what ARE you. People think I'm chinese And they'd keep making guesses, whereas if they just asked my ethnicity, i would've told them straight up, I'm vietnamese.
Y S. Thank you! Yeah I'm quite fed up with the "what are you" question. It's so rude. It's not like i ask them, "so what ARE you? I know you're white, but like, what ARE you?".
I also experience the same thing in Switzerland, and especially if you are from a country where the Asian community is rather small you even get worse kind of remarks and its frigging annoying
for 22 years every time I go to the grocery store or just a any store for that matter people just assume that I'm an Asian tourist! get's so fn annoying , but you slowly get desentizied to it and just accept the fact people won't acknowledge you as being a swede.
Robert Tang i guess im lucky in my country there's a lot of Asians and they just speak Dutch to you, but even at the airport I'm with my friend, at my friend they say exactly the same as to me, but to me they say it in English as if I'm a tourist yeah.
I love your videos soo much! You are such a positive person and always make me smile and these small videos on important topics makes me sooo happy! Thank you arden!
So totally agreed on this topic...I get those questions all the times too. And when I do tell them my ethnicity, they go "What's that?" I'm like idiots it's who I am...Some people are just stupid.
We love you arden ❤️ don't let people's negativity bring you down because you're awesome the way you are & you're a big influence on others. I wish I could be as awesome as you are. ❤️
the more i watch your videos the more i love you. you have no idea how important it is when people like you (known, loved, seen) talk about these things. we're in 2017 and we still hear stupid things like this. i personally don't care where are you from as long as you stay as lovely as you already are. so thank you, a thousand times.
Ugh! People sometimes think I'm Mexican because of my last name, but I'm really Filipino! & Right when I heard you say "Uber/Lyft" I instantly thought, "Omg, Arden get a new car already!" LOL
This video is so relatable on so many levels. I always dread going out because of this reason alone. It got to the point where I started to count how many "let me guess...Korean?" comments I get in one night. It's was 22. Very annoying.
Hahahaha so true! I totally relate, here in The Netherlands ppl like to say "ni hao, ni hao" or they name some kind of dish, there were even ppl chanting "Chinaaaa, Chinaaaa". What's the purpose of such behaviour....
So true for asians especially. People luv to compartmentalize everything. It's like can things just Be💖 I feel this 💯 Even my own ethnicity tell me that I don't look like them. 🤦🏻♀️
Thank you so much for this video, Arden. I think it all boils down to ignorance and small-minded people. I remember correcting a classmate (who asked if I was Chinese) that I was Korean and she said that we're all the same anyway. What.... I live in a predominantly black and Hispanic neighborhood so Asians were super rare and gave that classmate a pass. And I've had another instance where a middle-aged man was staring at me in Starbucks. I got so annoyed I walked up to him and asked if there was something on my face. Turned out he was figuring out what I was and why I was offended when he asked if I was Japanese. UGH.
Omg Arden! That also happens to me aaall the time and I'm also like: "whyyy do you care......?!?!" (I live in Denmark, but being Asian is apparently veeeery interesting for people who ain't......)
I feel you Arden! I swear people can list all the countries of the world before they reach mine and when I finally tell them where im from they're just like "what? ??no way" like what excuse me are u some kind of google map that decides where everyone is from
I can relate so much! I'm Italian, born and raised in Italy from Italian parents, my whole family is Italian BUT since I'm from the south I have a darker skin and northafrican traits. now I live in Germany, people constantly ask me where I'm from because there's a huge immigrants community where I live. So everyone assumes im Arabian or Latina somehow, I get asked why I'm not wearing a hijab and such things 😅 but I mean, even if I was Arabian why the heck would you care. leave me alone lol.
"What are you?" "Are you North or South Korean?" "I thought you were Chinese.." "Where are you from?" "Do you speak English?" ugh "Human" "South.....?" "I thought you were Scottish." "America." "Sí."
sooooooo frustrating when things like this happen to me. i get SO angry inside, but because it all happens so quickly i don't have time to react. and then i move on/let it go because it feels like there's no point in harboring anger over it. and then it happens again.
You shouldn't be angry if your hot then maybe its an obvious way to start a conversation and maybe its just talking sometime put the wrong way but it is definitely not racist or wrong to ask, if it happens a lot which it wont it happens everywhere in Asian to white and black people in Europe to others its just a part of being something different in that area take it light hearted.
It's all about context. If it's a stranger in the street saying 'ni hao', a cashier making slanted eye motions at you, a person saying that you don't LOOK American, etc. then I think I have a right to feel angry. Sure, it doesn't mean I would need to or should act out on that anger in all cases, I'll give you that. It DOES happen a lot though, both in California where I'm from and in England where I live now, and just because it's a part of the experience of being 'something different' doesn't mean it should be that way and just be taken lightheartedly.
the 'ni hao' is weird to say to a stranger but not necessarily bad the slanted eyes you can be pissed over although i would just shrug it off if i were Asian that is. i'm English and don't see much of what you said but not said it doesn't happen. and as for it doesn't mean it should be that way, that's life people are curious about being different.
What are you, Arden???? A BEAUTIFUL PERSON!!!! Screw those idiotic ppl! Also, trying to be racist to a dog?? Like...........come on ppl.....seriously? Either way, love the video and thank you for sharing your thoughts Arden!! ❤️❤️
I can literally relate to everything you said in this video, I'm half Belgian and half South-Korean and everytime I come across a new person they always assume I'm Chinese (????). And when I say I'm Korean they of course have to ask North or South 😒. And in school it's even worse, I tell everyone in my class at the beginning of the school year that I'm half South-Korean but every month the same people will ask me what I am again 😒 School starts again next month and I am not looking forward to tell everybody what I am 🙄
i definitely feel the struggle, even though i'm chinese. i always get assumptions, and there's always the "no, where are you FROM from?" when i tell people i was born in new jersey. and also the conversations that start with, no prompt, "are you japanese?" it gets irritating even if they have best interests at heart
Omg! I thought I was the only one going through this...One time, I was having a rough day and needed some fresh air so I headed to the beach. The moment I got out of my car some guy shouted "Ni hao" I was so offended and pissed off. I went straight back to my car and drove home. 😒 It's sad how we can't even walk the streets comfortably. It's similar to being catcalled. Thank you so much Arden for sharing this cause I can totally relate.
Ugh I feel this so harddddd. Arden, you are not alone. I feel like there won't ever be a time that Asians in America aren't seen as foreigners, and that makes me really sad. *sigh* On a personal note, once the public transit driver asked me this exact question. It was 6AM, and I had literally just gotten up and was on my way to work. WHY IS THAT YOUR FIRST QUESTION SO EARLY IN THE DAY. So I shot back at him: "I don't know, what are you?" and he looked so bewildered, I considered that confrontation a win.
only dogs can sit quietly most of the time when the owner is talking and do those stuffs. kinda cute! XD. cat would mostly literally try to release themselves.. like "let go of me human" which is why i love cats.. lol.. arrogantly cute!
thank you for this arden!! this is exactly how i feel. the other month i went to the beach and i was looking at a sand sculpture that this guy built. he said to me "you know it's american culture to leave a tip if you enjoy something"... like i know i'm an american. it annoys me when people assume i can't speak english or don't know american customs because of how i look. thank you for making this video. much love x
Hey Arden! I love your videos so much and I love how you take time to reply to us all the time!:) I'd be extremely interested if you ever filmed a video all about acting. Because I want to become an actress to the point where I feel like I won't ever be happy if I don't achieve that?? But getting into the industry is extremely hard and you have to put your all into it which is really complicated when you also have to make sure that you make enough money to pay for your house and all that other stuff you just have to take care of. (English is also not my native language which brings me to the accent problem but honestly that's nothing that can't be solved). Anyways, I'd really love if you made a video about maybe your acting journey, how you got into it, advice and all that! :)
Oh my gosh, I feel this so hard. I'm hapa and the weirdest race experience I had was a woman at the train station going on a tirade about how I couldn't possibly be Asian (what I'd told her when she asked) and then she insinuated that my mother had cheated with "the help". It really does get exhausting having to defend your existence as an Asian American.
I'm so sorry you have gone through all of that. Nobody deserves that. When I was in elementary, there weren't many Lantinos in my town. I was the only Latina in my class for a good year or 2. The school also didn't have a bilingual class or teacher (instead they put me in Speecb from 3rd-5th grade). They told my parents (they were bilingual) to speak to me in English instead of Spanish (my first language). Due to this, my parents were so scared that I would be bullied for my accent and ethnicty, that they only spoke English to me. They grew up with that and didn't want me to go through the same. Now, I'm in college and I am no longer fluent in Spanish. There are some words where I can't pronounce them correctly. I wish I could go back and speak both languages instead of mainly being fluent in one.
I completely understand bc I've been through the same thing. I'm just curious about your thing with dogs though. Because I do ask people what kind of dog they have since I like expanding my knowledge on what dogs look like. I want to adopt a dog in the future so it gives me a better idea. I'm just giving another viewpoint but yeah SHAME ON THOSE PEOPLE WHO ARE JUST BEING RUDE.
So inmature, I thought there were people like that only here in south america, but looks like I was wrong! There is a lot of asians in that situation, it's frustrating
LOL! Some people are so ignorant. I live in Texas now but born and raised in LA most of my life.. and I get this question alot too... ahhh so you're definitely not Japanese because Japanese people are so rare to come by.. so you must be Chinese or something.. I do that emoji too. Arden it's so hard being an Asian person living in the countryside of Texas of all places. I get racist looks at grocery stores almost everyday like I'm some kind of zoo animal.
this is the most relatable thing i've ever watched. i'm filipina, and people don't even know that it's asian😂 i've grown up with everyone thinking i was like some alien because apparently the only asian ethnicities are chinese or japanese. but when people did figure out i was asian, they'd still bully me anyway. people would always say i'm not american because my parents aren't american or because i'm not white, but i was born in america, so therefore i am american! i hope times are changing for the good and asians are not stereotyped into one thing! loved this vid arden❤️
OMG same damn feeling. One time someone asked me 'where are you from?' I legit just answered where I lived, why does it matter and there's indeed better ways to ask someone.
"What are you?"
"Human. What are you?"
I finally found another human 😂
JBORIDD123 😂❤️
Connie T I identify as a demifox kin
What you just said That's racist
Read what I said cause it goes for you too.
more humans :-)
I also tell people I can't say, because I came here to avoid an arrange marriage.
Tell em Kitsune
Ahh TW reference XD
Verstinct Vst Actually Im confused because of the japanese teen wolf thing xD so I thought she was japanese
XDDDDDD
M E R Y L Her character on Teen Wolf is Japanese on her mother's side and Korean on her father's side. This was stated in the show. Mason (the black, gay dude) asks her if she speaks Japanese. YEEAH!
Yep. One of the most exhausting things about being Asian. The prevalence of these kinds of things happening is astounding. 😞
I mean, genuine curiosity is one thing... but there's plenty of ways to find out that I'm Filipino without being rude or offensive.
Ok I tend to say this if I want to know. I would say something like "Hello, How are you? You are really beautiful. What is your nationality? "
UnderscoreBrian try being African, I constantly have to explain that there are private schools in Africa and that I don't have a pet lion 😑
Yeah, ask about cultures out of genuine curiosity to learn something and appreciate the culture. Not play some stupid identity guessing game.
Agree with this. Being Asian in America is hard no matter how long you've been there or lived there all your life.
UnderscoreBrian I'm filipino too
I feel you, Arden. I feel you. *Pat Pat*
This is kinda the same for Hispanics, people usually think that everyone who speaks Spanish is from Mexico... -__-
Thank you.
LOPSAN Ughhh yes definitely. I got this a lot when I was younger, but now people just assume I'm white.
Very true!
Yeah it's offensive, even to me, as I'm Latino and my family is from Spain (which is actually the origin of the word "Spanish") and Cuba. It reminds of Ryan's video when he said that "All Asians are Chinese!"
+ardenBcho I LOVE YOU ♥♥
the worst is this: "Are you korean or asian?" so now we know who's not going to pass geography smh
I'm Korean but I always get "ni hao" or "konichiwa" or "what are you" as well😪😂
If you're Korean, call me!
You Know if we get married, then you wouldn't have to change your last name.
Potato dowry!
Hi michelle, i love orientals and i love estimg wierd foods. Lets talk. Message me.
historydan learn how to spell first.
I totally understand Arden. I am Korean too, and I have had so many of those conversations with people. I hate how people treat us like this.

"What am I?"
You're a talented cute and beautiful human being :3 xx
I get the whole, "Your English is really good!" comment a ton of times. And of course, being who I am, I have to answer, "Thanks, you speak fairly WELL too..."
I LOVE THESE KINDS OF VIDEOS BY YOU. Thanks for voicing our frustrations
I am so sorry Arden, that's horrible i'll keep you in my prayers
Arden you are AWESOME just the way you are💕
Yet another well put together, meaningful video from Arden :) you're an awesome youtuber! You don't just sit and do tags and challenges like some of the other youtubers. You're origional and that's great!
WHY IS CHEWY SO ADORABLE
Arden, you are a hundred percent, definitely, certainly, absolutely; a beauty.
And your dog, unmistakably, undoubtedly; a good dog.
Kimmy Le next time just let them waste their time guessing something that's not even worth your time..
Btw you look beautiful
I love that ur getting more comfortable in front of the camera it makes me happy
I love your videos soo much! You are such a positive person and always make me smile and these small videos on important topics makes me sooo happy! Thank you arden!
you and chewy are the sweetest person and dog of this world❤❤ the others things don't matter
that's why you're my idol arden
So totally agreed on this topic...I get those questions all the times too. And when I do tell them my ethnicity, they go "What's that?" I'm like idiots it's who I am...Some people are just stupid.
We love you arden ❤️ don't let people's negativity bring you down because you're awesome the way you are & you're a big influence on others. I wish I could be as awesome as you are. ❤️

aww Arden *hugs* first of all you're an amazing person
I totally get you! We are all humans and dogs are all dogs!! We should care as much about what we are as dogs do!
Ugh! People sometimes think I'm Mexican because of my last name, but I'm really Filipino! & Right when I heard you say "Uber/Lyft" I instantly thought, "Omg, Arden get a new car already!" LOL
Omg I'm Korean too and I also get so annoyed when people ask, "North or South?"
"what is Arden"
"Beautiful, Arden is beautiful"
THANKYOU for always never failing to put a smile on my face in every video. THANKYOU
This video is so relatable on so many levels. I always dread going out because of this reason alone. It got to the point where I started to count how many "let me guess...Korean?" comments I get in one night. It's was 22. Very annoying.
I look up to you so much Arden, you are a beautiful person! ❤️
Thanks for this video. I have suffered with this mentality from people my whole life and it is nice to know that someone understands what it is like.
Hahahaha so true! I totally relate, here in The Netherlands ppl like to say "ni hao, ni hao" or they name some kind of dish, there were even ppl chanting "Chinaaaa, Chinaaaa". What's the purpose of such behaviour....
I feel you, girl!! I get that a lot and it does annoy me sometimes.
I live in Europe and I'm korean. Everybody says hello in Chinese or makes racist jokes. Ugh. Relatable. 짜쯩나😡
So true for asians especially. People luv to compartmentalize everything. It's like can things just Be💖 I feel this 💯 Even my own ethnicity tell me that I don't look like them. 🤦🏻♀️
I mean when you think about it, Americans aren't even 'American'. Except for 'Native Americans'. They're probably the most American Americans.
This made me cry...So moving 😭💔
Thank you so much for this video, Arden. I think it all boils down to ignorance and small-minded people. Preach sista!! Being "Jackie Chan's daughter" is cool and all but I want my own real life with my real parents.
Yes, please. Spread the awareness friend.
You are my friend and everyone's friend Arden -- that's all that matters.
Oh gosh i love her voice ❤
Yup know the feeling all to well

Ive been living in Canada for 4months so far to study in the university. Everytime I experienced racism, I feel like going back to Korea.
Exactly why I don't enjoy meeting new people
I LOVE YOU ARDEN!!! YOU'RE MY QUEEN! ❤💕
I'm Mexican Spanish Hispanic Italian white American and Japanese

Really love your attitude! We all are only HUMANS.
Arden you are Korean or Japanese, it does not matter, but rather what you have special, a happy heart 😃
You are a hardworking woman.
This is so relatable.
What are you?
A wonderful human being😁😁😁😁
Tell them you're a thunder kitsune
OMG I LOVE YOU ARDEN XD CHEWIE AT THE END
I always used to think Filipinos(as) were in the Hispanics category when I was a kid lol
UNILIBRADO haha, yeah, people thought that too. and my last name is rivera, so that furthered the thought.
Jona KylaR yaaa same Filipino heerree
I feel you, Arden. I'm always experiencing the exact thing in the UK. It's rude and annoying.
OMG same damn feeling. One time someone asked me 'where are you from?' I legit just answered where I lived, why does it matter and there's indeed better ways to ask someone.
You are so beautiful and may God bless you Arden Cho. Why people cant just realize God made us all equal. We are all human beings on this earth.
