Thank you so much for helping me to better serve and understand my local Indian violin players. I work for a music store in California - South Bay area, and have many Indian customers learning the violin. This brought light to the concept of Carnatic tuning.
Namaste ! My heartfelt salutations to you for the initiative of bringing out the skandahora text in the form of a web page. It is really a blessing. There are many people who are still waiting for an update to the website. I pray to Mahadevi that you get more time to bring out such treasures to the community. Best wishes. PS: Sorry to bring out this way as website contact forms are not working in both websites
Very nice, thank you. I am a westerner but am interested in learning Indian music. What kind of strings do you use? Steel? Are they much looser because the pitch is lower than in Western violin music?
+dannonflynn Thank you for your kind comments. I use ordinary medium tension strings; nothing special. For the pitch, strings are moderately tight which is a plus for playing complex gamakas.
great explanation, thank you, this lesson is very helpful to tune violin by our-selves, in the same way can you please explain the concept and application of elements of canatic music like tala, raga, Melakarta, Asampurna Melakarta etc...
Sir, I have currently moved to USA. Would it be possible for you to suggest someone in the states who I can learn Carnatic violin . I am learning western violin , but my heart is in Carnatic. Thanks a lot in advance. Looking forward to your response.
Very nice! I learnt carnatic violin when i was in school in Delhi. I am currently in US and don't have my violin here. Do you know what would be a good model to buy (Amazon or any other website)?
I have found these two models very good as well as reasonably priced on Musiciansfriend.com: (1) Stentor Student II Series Violin Outfit (4/4) (2) Bellafina Prodigy Series Violin Outfit (4/4). Please note that these usually come with the bridge not in position. You will need to set it up well and tune.
Could you please recommend a good beginner violin brand to buy in US (to learn carnatic music)? I couldn't find any information on this. Thanks in advance.

+Uma Nair For Carnatic music, we need to first select the base Sruthi. Usually, for solo performances or learning purposes, the base Sruthi for the swara SA is 3 (or E in western terms). The second string from the right (when the violin is held in the carnatic playing position) will be tuned to this pitch (E). The first string is tuned to the swara PA (pitch B). The third string is tuned to swara lower PA (pitch B in the lower scale) and the fourth string is tuned to swara SA (pitch E in the lower scale). While using an electronic tuner, adjust the tone of each string until the tuner will display the corresponding pitch (B, E, B-lower, E-lower). Use the fine adjusters to get as close as possible. With the help of electronic tuners, one can achieve about 95% accuracy. This should be good enough for learning purposes.

so the violin should be tuned e b e' b' (from low to high) ?
Sorry for replying so late. If E is the base sruthi, then, the strings are tuned B'-E'-B-E. (from the string on the right to that on the left).
Ah, I understand, thank you, sir
robabnawaz You're most welcome.
