How do you explain that the alleged bullet was below his ear? Especially considering the camera was far below Trump?
How can a bullet be captured in a single frame for about 1 foot be real considering how many feet per second a bullet flies?
@@wownewstome6123 Based on the caliber (5.56), an estimate of muzzle length, and the distance, it took about .16 seconds from muzzle to ear. Doug said his Sony captures 30/fps, or .03 seconds between frames. In that bright lighting, the exposure period (on auto settings) would have been very low. It's a lucky shot, but perfectly within the realm of possibility.
And I don't agree with you the bullet was below his ear.
If that is a bullet, it's moving up. If the shooter was on the roof, would be moving downward. Second shooter?
To me, it looks about level, if anything. Remember though, that the photographer was pointing his camera upwards. When you're looking up, an object could appear to be moving upwards or downwards just based on the horizontal angle it came in from.

He knows that ALL Pres Trump's appearances, big, small, in any location, are important for our country, for the world. Look at what's happening in the UK right now. Great photography is all to often about luck. The Iwo Jima flag raising was (a second larger flag for one thing) shot from the hip as the photographer was turning around, nearly missing the whole thing. Had he waited to lift to his eye, he would have missed it.
You have to admit, Trump saw a photo opportunity of a lifetime.

This is BS! I have a 20 yr old version of Photoshop, and I could replicate this photo with bullet in about 10 minutes! That's about 1 foot of travel for the bullet and since a bullet fired from an AR-15 with a 16″ barrel travels at about 3,250 feet per second, he would have to be filming with shutter rate of 270 frames per second. That is not reality!

Photojournalists, not unlike the Secret Service, converge on the incident. Granted, their job isn’t to protect life as is the USSS, but still, kudos to Mr. Mills and the three other photographers at the podium for their actions. That’s dedication.
What were the 30 FPS camera settings for this bullet image? What is the velocity of a .223 or 5.56 at 150 yards? Is this image physically possible?

The math ain't mathing... 1/8000 sec = 0.000125 sec. Approximate bullet travel = 12 inches. Required bullet velocity would have to be 8000 fps. I call BS.
He couldn't capture the picture even if he knew the bullet was coming and used 1/8000 speed at 30 frames per second. He could only record 30/8000 of time every second which is 0.4% and that means 99.6% of the time he captures nothing.

Everyone in here proclaiming what a great photographer Doug is - knowing next to nothing about either weapons, math, or photography... I'm a former USN Small Arms Instructor and work in an engineering role in a Yellow Branded Camera company for the last 19 years. I'll slightly disagree with the POSSIBILITY of capturing, but fully agree that the chances were so slim. My analysis until countered stands - the bullet track shown is TOO LONG for a capture at 1/8000s. For the speeds given, the track should have been closer to about 4.5" having an estimated bullet velocity of 3000 fps.

Other commenter pointed out, when a bullet may go 50 feet per second, how can it be in a photo for only about 1 foot and considering shutter speed, how was it even captured?

Question 1:
So he was shooting film basically, 30 pictures a second, saved as images.
1 minute of that is 1800 images, in two formats (jpg and RAW), that is 3600 images. That will take an immense amount of memory.
If he wanted still images, why did he shoot it like film, but saved as images? Why not just take individual images?
Does he shoot entire rally speeches like that?
I mean, there is already video, the rallies are broadcast on tv networks, it's not a big deal, so why does he shoot 30 images a second?
Question 2:
He shot these images with a shutter speed of 1/8000. That's incredibly high. You don't use a shutter speed like that if you are filming a person talking. I can see no explanation for this?

I only heard the comment from the interviewer about 30 frames per second, which obviously isn't what you use to shoot photos because it is far too slow. I don't think the photog confirmed that is what he shoots with. It wouldn't make sense. Shooting at 1/8000 also doesn't make sense because you don't need that sort of speed, although it's possible to do in broad daylight.

You're misunderstanding several basic things here. First, he wasn't shooting continuously as in a video. The comment about 30 FPS meant of the camera is capable of shooting stills at 30 FPS, not that he was shooting that much continuously. And it's quite possible he could've been using a shutter speed of 1/8000, Though he didn't say anything like that about shutter Speed in the interview.
He was not shooting film - almost no one does now. He was shooting digital. And he wasn't shooting 30 FPS continuously, the reporter just mentioned that the camera was capable of 30 FPS. If you can come close to that frame rate at all it would only be for short bursts.

I don't get it. The bullet is flying on a horizontal plane and not at an angle from above on a roof. It seems that it would be shot on the same plane as Trump was standing.

@@Noah_527 There might be some - but most of the people covering an event like this are going to stay right in front of the podium, and stay on the principal. Other than a one-off like this, you're wasting time(money) for coverage no one is going to use. no editor wants photos of the crowd without the speaker in the foreground for context. When The Guy is speaking, that's pretty much the center of the universe. I cover a lot of events with electeds, and you could land a flying saucer anywhere but the stage, and there would be no pictures of it.

Shouldn't the bullet be traveling in a downward trajectory since the alleged shooter shot from the peak of a roof downward to Trumps position . I would like to see elevations of both the roof and Trumps stage. A true an accurate account must be a comprehensive look into even the smallest detail!
The photographer was at a low vantage point in front of trump. When you're looking up, a downward-moving object could appear to be moving upwards just based on the horizontal angle it came in from relative to the camera.

This man is absolutely amazing, he needs to get a cape! He got a picture of something smaller than a Tylenol caplet going 0.6 miles per second. Maybe Jen needs to scan the data from his camera some more, she could probably find Jimmy Hoffa and the real killers of Nicole Simpson!

I think you misunderstood. The bullet photo was pure luck, just taking random pictures. His reaction was to then run to the stairs for the iconic shots. Watch the video, it is actually remarkable that the 3 of them did not care about the bullets at all, just the pictures.

An AR-15 shoots a 5.56mm round at 2800-3300 fps. If Doug Mills did indeed use 1/8000 shutterspeed, the largest bullet trail is 0.4 feet. Clearly the bullet trail in the photo is 1 foot.
Good observation! Perhaps we are looking at the round different from the one that has caused the injury. If the photographer is not mistaken about the shutter speed, this trace being half a foot long implies a trajectory that has passed closer to the camera.

@@cogoid Note also that 1/8000 shutterspeed at 30 fps means it's highly coincidental that any one would catch a bullet in a frame - each 30 fps frame contains 8000/30 = 266.66 slices of which only 1 slice is captured. That's less than 0.5 % probability.
@@stephaniegrow2001 Sure, it was pure luck that he got this image. But the probability is a little higher than 0.5%. In *this* "slice" the round shows exactly where we see it. But it would also show earlier in the trajectory but still within the image frame for approximately 3 earlier slices. And later in the trajectory for another slice and a half. Considering this, and that there were multiple rounds, the probability of catching one *somewhere* in the frame is closer to 10%. On top of that, there were multiple photographers covering the event. One got really lucky to snap this very dramatic image.
BTW, the information about 1/8000 s exposure was indeed correct. This was confirmed by the data embedded in the image file. It also passes sanity check for what the exposure should have been in these conditions for the reported aperture and ISO setting.
Could be easily done with photoshop.

I was in awe when i saw the photos. Experience is good but God the angels were with President Trump . Thank you 5:47 God and luck was on your side so if you kept taking photos im sure you had a lot of good photos. I truly loved the fist pump photo with the flag behind him his blood stained face it was an extrodinary photo. I feel it is 5:47 an award winning photo but in essence you captured history, froze time ,documented forensics . This was a dark time in history that should never have happened. My sincere condolences to the family of the man that died sitting at the rally.

That bullet, traveling at 3000fps could not be captured by that slow of a camera.
This camera can shoot 30 still images per second, but the shutter speed of each image, on a sunny day, could easily be 1/2,000 second or faster, probably up to 1/16,000 second. Bullet probably doing 2,000 feet per second at the distance. And it appears about a foot long in the photo.

Not really. Leni was more a director and producer. She led large media groups, prescouted large events, organized every single movement and placement of cameras before the event even happened.
Mills is a leading photographer that gets 1st row spot for important public events, particularly for presidents, and has followed them and taken pictures of them for years

BS - Camera shutter speed is 1/60 second for a 30 frame per second camera. A .223 bullet is going 3250 feet per second at muzzle, at 150 yards is going about 3000 feet per second. Divide 3000 by 60 and it travels 50 feet while shutter is open, not 1 foot in picture. Total BS like I said. Maybe it was some ear wax instead of a bullet. Any comments Mr. Mills about how your camera was able to capture the bullet?

You're off on the shutter speed. Try 1/8000th of a second for starters.
Sure, Mills goes up to 1/8000 sec and 30 frames per second. He only can record 30/8000 of time every second. That is 0.37% meaning 99.63% of the time he does not record anything. Did he have 100 cameras going at different segments of time to get the picutre of a bullet?
