    • Roofing Contractor Exp...
    After the installation is complete, we will conduct a final inspection of your new roof to make sure our work meets your expectations. We will answer any questions you may have about how to take care and maintain your new roof and will explain all of your warranty information at that time.
    So, if you're in Austin, Texas and you've been in a hail storm or experienced severe weather and you need someone who is knowledgeable, professional, and trustworthy call Dan Malin today at 512-861-8294 and schedule your free, no-obligation roofing estimate.
    Here are 8 questions you should ask a roofing contractor before you sign on the dotted line:
    1. Are they local and if so for how long? Don't assume that someone is local just because they have the same area code on their magnetic sign. You can get a local number in less than 1 minute with a few clicks of a mouse.
    2. How long have they been in business as a roofer?
    3. Are they insured, and if so, what coverage to they carry and what is the name and number of their carrier?
    4. Will their installers be employees or sub-contractors.
    5. Ask them if they have local references, and if so, do they have references that are 2 years old or older? Then check them!
    6. Do they use staples or nails? Staples will void the manufacturer's warranty. If they use staples this should be a sign.
    7. Will they use "starter shingles" for the rakes and the eaves? Starter shingles
    8. Do they offer a 10 year warranty on their workmanship?

    Very Good explanation of recoverable depreciation. We do our best to walk the home owner through the insurance claims process and they frequently go with the lower estimate. We always upgrade to ice and water shield in valleys, fireplaces, and proper ventilation which most times is lacking in homes. Homeowners believe they get to keep the difference in what the insurance estimate is and what they actually are paid for with the lowest estimate.Hence, they are bewildered at the end. Dan makes a valid case for perception of value. Nice video

    Great info to pass on to people who have had roof damage. Every state may have slightly different ways the claim is handled but knowing the basics puts you in a much better position to choose a good roofer and not necessarily the cheapest one.

    Hi Dan,
    I just started in roofing sales with a very reputable co. in Houston/Katy , Tx. I understand more about Replacement Cost
    Value and the relationship of depreciation (you explained how it was recoverable depreciation based on the invoice
    amount that is charged to homeowner and sent to insurance co.) I now understand that homeowner gets a final check
    based on this inv. amount. if contractor does work and submits inv. (for examlple) for $1000 less then RCV on adjuster form, Homeowner
    will get check for $1000 less than recoverable depreciation on original RCV form (work and material will probably be subpar).
    As you said this is reverse logic of almost all with "I will save money because less expensive contractor is invoicing less".
    i suppose that some unethical (scam ) contractors will give homeowners false invoice for higher amount to coincide with RCV insurance report (in this case falsifying $1000 more)= insurance fraud.
    This what I am doing on a Saturday night - I must be a dork!

    Great explanation same way I try to explain it to people wanting quotes. Keeping money from insurance is insurance fraud and the contractor eating the deductible is insurance fraud. I wish ALL STATE and Farmers insurance adjusters did not suck and turn down all valid claims with wind and hail damage. Some adjusters are dishonest

    I retired in 2002 due to back and knee problems. The last time I ran into a stapled roof I told the owner that there would be extra charge of $10 per square on the tear off. he got mad and I said then call so/so that put it on and let him do it.he said the guy was to busy and had over 2 years back load due to the hailstorm. I kindly let him know the guy was knocking on doors trying to get some work. This was the last time I ran into any staples about 1991.I had a company in the Texas panhandle plus would cover parts of Okla.. and Kan. if I wasn't real busy.Staples is just something you don't see in that area.I roofed for a company in Austin,Texas in 1982 thru 1984 and that's all we used.I used nail guns but hand nailing is best of all.They just don't do it anymore.

    Attic fan will help with stratification no box vents or ridge line 🤔 those are more for moisture release. Don't let a roofing salesmen tell you about enthalpy. Hot goes to cold, hot in cold surroundings creates moisture, dew, ridge line vent or box or both give a release (some were to heat to escape before condensation(dew) they won't cool or heat your house better. That requires mechanical forced air .

    This man pretty well knows his stuff. He is legal and carry's insurance etc. One thing not mentioned and most people do not know and is very important. If the person or contractor fails to pay for the material on your house then the supplier can hold you liable and you will have to pay for it even if you paid your contractor.I have seen this happen with a few storm trooper company's(fly by night).

    This dude is right about these contractors cutting corners. Go with factory trained installers, a Master Elite GAF contractor with a 50 year non prorated warranty, or something like that. . If the contractor goes out of business , the roofing manufacturer will pay labor and materials. Nothing is worse than paying for the same shit twice.

    How can they know how old the roof is if previous owner pulled no permit with no record when roof was installed 🤔. They can guess educated but it's a guess and then give you an exact amount of money on depreciation. Your saying they can guess but put exact amount dollar wise. STATEFARM IS THE WORST ON THIS. THEY DIDNT EVEN SEND SOMEONE TO VISUALLY LOOK AT THE HOME I PURCHASED , BUT INSURED ME ANYWAYS, NOW WHEN I MAKE A CLAIM THEY LOW BALL ME.

    How can i handle this if i do my own work. My house had tornado damage. The insurance company is allowing full replacement less 3000 in recoverable deperciation. I am a builder by trade. I intend to do my own roof. What legal way can i recover this. Will the insurance company accept an invoice from me equal to the amount of the insurance company bid? Has anyone else run info this problem?

    Always advisable for the insured to seek the assistance of a reputable Public Adjuster to protect their interest. A good PA will ensure the claim is properly managed so the insured is not losing out on money they are rightfully entitled too and usually will have established relationships with qualified builders that can be a great resource to the policyholder. Great resource for roofers looking to run reputable operations too.

    Million dollar bet the speaker has insurance background . If you don't replace your damaged roof two things will happen a: you get canceled because bad roof causes more damage or B: you are asked to sign a paper that says that your roof is not insured anymore . c: you don't get discounts for being claim free after a claim but dont let that bother you .

      The insurance company will release the depreciation after the final invoice and or job completion certificate is sent to them stating that the roof is complete and includes the total of the job. If it matches the adjusters estimate younger the full amount of the depreciation, if not it would be the difference of the Replacmnt cost Value minus the deducltbe and depreciation. He explains towards the end as well to give you some insight. You can only recoup the depreciation after the work is complete .

    Hey you look like this guy shon at excel roofing up in dunes//Sioux falls area//Nebraska area.
    He did my house in under 3 hours with a cheap fast “out of towner” type crew. Now all the sudden the chimney begins to leak........🤬 he insists all these things like, call a chimney guy or I caulked some stuff let’s wait and see.
    I’m kinda desperate in that I need a all in one video on how to inspect my roofers job and determine if he is right or wrong.
    There were7-8 guys all taking breaks up by the chimney throughout the job for water and whatnot.
    Fact one that I have,
    my roof/chimney did not ever leak until post job.
    This is making me just want to raise holy hell up to and including just fixing it myself and just bidding materials and labor at a fair rate back to him.
    What all can I do?
    Should I get an invoice book and head to the store later this am?

    • @clashed472
      @clashed472 2 роки тому

      Most of the big roofing company hired sub contractors, they dont give estimate, they go by with the insurance company. They pay half to their sub and they keep the rest. They eat all the insurance money. Once the premium goes up we the one have to pay all that.

    Good explanation on insurance part.
    HORSE SHIT on the other roofers cutting corners over a price. If your statement was correct then what you are saying is you are always the highest or middle bid and win work, or your saying you are the lowest and do good work and win.
    Which one is it??
    I've seen bids that were $100 different and would not pick the higher bidder because he had a crapper reputation. I've done the same with low bids and did not select them because they they changed out people on the crew and lost experience and I would not pick them.
    It's not only about the money. It's workmanship! I takes nothing to snap a line and check your shingle for being straight every so often. I've seen lower bid contractors win work because the just started a company and had gone out on their own.
    Time, and time, and time again I've seen high priced construction bids won win crappy work done, because of many reasons. maybe its, the workforce and they are not experienced, maybe the boss is not on the job enough, maybe he himself doesn't care, etc, etc.
    So stop the bullshit with the lowest bid nonsense.

    • @punisher6
      @punisher6 6 років тому

      georgeEPC good roofers dont need to snap lines. 😃

    • @georgeEPC
      @georgeEPC 6 років тому

      That's not true and you know it. I could use a 6 or 8 ft level on a ledger board that spans 30 feet, Or I could snap a line verify and go. Why because In 30 feet 3 pieces of wood have different crowning so My level could be off by 1/8 or maybe a 1/4" depending on where I place the level and how big the crown is. Takes me seconds to snap a line and eliminate pain.
      Are you in the roofing trade??

    • @punisher6
      @punisher6 6 років тому

      georgeEPC ya but thats the difference between carpenters and real roofers. Snapping lines is for rookies or carpenters trying to roof. Besides when rafrers are up and down etc. snapping line does nothing because its impossible for a course line to appear straight. They will appear to go up and down when in fact they are correct.

    SORRY but telling people that "using staples instead of nails" is "cutting corners" is NOT TRUE. Ask any roof crew which would they rather tear-off .... a stapled roof or a nailed roof. I was impressed with your video until you made that comment which is simply not true.
    And btw, I've been roofing for 43 years. I currently use nails, but I used 1-inch crown staples for over 10 years straight without incident. Furthermore, I've NEVER had one case where a homeowner called me to report his stapled shingles blew off during high winds. It's always a nailed roof 100% of the time. You sir cannot prove that staples are inferior to nails - period.
