Siyam means to refrain, can be for anything.
Maryum did sawm or refraining from speaking in Quran. (recall she pointed to Jesus when questioned on her pregnancy and Jesus spoke as a child).
in Islam Siyam is intending & to worship Allah by the acts of siyam from food, drink, sx from fajr to magrib.
So ppl shouldn't say I fast to lose weight but for Allah (establishes Iklas)
      10 :00 -
You also have to differentiate actions by intentions, this is how you separate 2 rakat sunnah and 2 rakat fard fajr. You can pray 2 rakat fajr with one intention but can't after it's done switch the intention.
Also separate habits from acts, one may shower every jumua byt custom, but if you start going to jumua then you should have intention of ghusl for jumua for a reward.
A person can say go back to your mom's house... he can mean talaq or a break... what determines it is intention.
should we make one intention for fasting the whole month of Ramadan or each day... (naturally both overlap, just by getting up eating suhr etc.)
What is one sleeps before Magrib and wakes up after Fajr next day like in places the night is short? maybe uk in some seasons?
To say each day is needed, scholars say : Narrated Hafsah, Ummul Mu'minin:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) said: He who does not determine to fast before dawn does not fast.
      - Abu Dawud 2454, Fasting
(Marfu, generally accepted to be for Fard fasting)
      'Aishah said:
When the Prophet (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) entered upon me, he would ask: Do you have food ? When we said: No, he would say: I am fasting. Waki' added in his version: Another day when he entered upon us, we said: Messenger of Allah, some pudding (hair) has been presented to us and we have retained it for you. He said: Bring it to me. Talhah said: He fasted in the morning, but broke his fast (that day).
      - Abu Dawud 2455, Fasting
(this is for optional fasting as we see he broke it)
A'isha used to say to 'Urwa:
Son of my sister, by Allah, I used to see the new moon, then the new moon, then the new moon, i. e. three moons in two months, and fire was not kindled in the house of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him). I ('Urwa) said: Auntie, then what were your means of sustenance? She said: Dates and water. But it (so happened) that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) had some Ansar as his neighbours and they had milch animals and they used to send to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) some milk of their (animals) and he served that to us.
      - Sahih Muslim 2972, Zhud Heart softeners.
      20 :00 -
Abu Huraira reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) went out (of his house) one day or one night, and there he found Abu Bakr and 'Umar also. He said:
What has brought you out of your houses at this hour? They said: Allah's Messenger, it is hunger. Thereupon he said: By Him in Whose Hand is my life, what has brought you out has brought me out too; get up. They got up along with him. and (all of them) came to the house of an Ansari, but he was not at home. When his wife saw him she said: Most welcome, and Allah's Messenger (may peace be Upon him) said to her: Where is so and so? She said: He has gone to get some fresh water for us. When the Ansari came and he saw Allah's Messenger (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) and his two Companions, he said: Praise be to Allah, no one has more honourable guests today than I (have). He then went out and brought them a bunch of ripe dates, dry dates and fresh dates, and said: Eat some of them. He then took hold of his long knife (for slaughtering a goat or a sheep). Allah's Messenger (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Beware of killing a milch animal. He slaughtered a sheep for them and after they had eaten of it and of the bunch and drank, and when they had taken their fill and had been fully satisfied with the drink, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) said to Abu Bakr and Umar: By Him in Whose Hand is my life, you will certainly be questioned about this bounty on the Day of judgment. Hunger brought you out of your house, then you did not return until this bounty came to you.
      - Sahih Muslim 2038a, Drinks
in order to start a voluntary fast you must not have done something that breaks your fast after fajr, or its starting point!
Can you make intention to start fast 10 minutes before Magrib if you were busy all day? Some say yes, they use the hadith above unrestrictedly.
Some say it has to be before Zhur to fast predominantly and that the hadith above took place before Zawal
Quran 2 :183 says Fast to attain Taqwa.
Ali said Taqwa is to fear Allah (not the type that takes away hope), act upon Islam, contentment with your sustenance and to prepare for qiyamat.

Surah Ihsan 76. 9. (Saying): "We feed you seeking Allah's Countenance only. We wish for no reward, nor thanks from you.
      10. "Verily, We fear from our Lord a Day, hard and distressful, that will make the faces look horrible.
(Hadith whoever wakes up with safety in home and a days food wakes up with everything)
Abu Musa reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him. Whoever hates to meet Allah, Allah hates to meet him.”
      - Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6508, heart tendering
Aisha adds I said, “O Prophet of Allah, all of us hate death and are averse to it.” The Prophet said, “It is not like this. Rather, when a believer is given glad tidings of the mercy of Allah, His pleasure, and Paradise, he loves to meet Allah and Allah loves to meet him. When a disbeliever is given news of punishment by the hand of Allah and hardship to be imposed by Him, he hates to meet Allah and Allah hates to meet him.”
      - Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 157, Iman
Quran 20 : 126 - [Allah] will say, "Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten.
Quran 32 : 14. Then taste you (the torment of the Fire) because of your forgetting the Meeting of this Day of yours. Surely We too will forget you: so taste you the abiding torment for what you used to do.
Quran 7 : 51. "Who took their religion as an amusement and play, and the life of the world deceived them." So this Day We shall forget them as they forgot their meeting of this Day, and as they used to reject Our Ayat.
Quran 2 : 197... And take a provision (with you) for the journey, but the best provision is At-Taqwa (piety, righteousness)
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) as saying:
Don't nurse grudge and don't bid him out for raising the price and don't nurse aversion or enmity and don't enter into a transaction when the others have entered into that transaction and be as fellow-brothers and servants of Allah. A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim. He neither oppresses him nor humiliates him nor looks down upon him. The piety is here, (and while saying so) he pointed towards his chest thrice. It is a serious evil for a Muslim that he should look down upon his brother Muslim. All things of a Muslim are inviolable for his brother in faith: his blood, his wealth and his honour.
      - Sahih Muslim 2564, Book of Pious righteous Manners.
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “On the first night of the month of Ramadan, the devils are chained and the jinn are restrained, the gates of Hellfire are closed and none of its gates are opened, the gates of Paradise are opened and none of its gates are closed, and a heavenly caller announces: O seeker of good, come near! O seeker of evil, stop short! Allah has those He saves from the Hellfire, and that is during every night.”

      Wisdom of fasting is Taqwa.
Chastity - Narrated `Abdullah ebn Masud:
We were with the Prophet (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) while we were young and had no wealth. So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) said, "O young people! Whoever among you can marry, should marry, because it helps him lower his gaze and guard his modesty, and whoever is not able to marry, should fast, as fasting diminishes his prowess.
      - Bukhari 5066, Nikah
      Weakening the devil.
      Narrated `Ali bin Husain:
Safiya bint Huyai came to the Prophet (in the mosque), and when she returned (home), the Prophet (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) accompanied her. It happened that two men from the Ansar passed by them and the Prophet called them saying, "She is Safiya!" those two men said, "Subhan Allah!" The Prophet (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Satan circulates in the human body as blood does and I was afraid lest Satan might insert an evil thought in your minds."
      - Bukhari 2038, Itikaf
      Gratefuleness.
      Iklas.
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Allah Almighty said, ‘Every deed of the son of Adam is for him, except for fasting. It is for Me and I will reward it.’ Fasting is a shield, so when one of you fasts, he may not be obscene or boisterous. If someone insults him or fights him, let him say: Indeed, I am fasting. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, the breath coming from the mouth of a fasting person is more pleasant to Allah than the scent of musk. The fasting person has two moments of relief he enjoys: when he breaks his fast he is joyful, and when he meets his Lord he is joyful for his fasting.”
      - bukhari 1904, Muslim 1151 Book of fasting.
      Empathy.
Nothing specific that is wajib in siyam.
Hadith whoever doesn't leave off false and speech and acts, Allah doesn't need any fasting from you.
Salaf said the easiest fasting is leaving off eating and drinking.
Leave off idol & vulgar speech.
      50 :00 -
hadith there are people who only feel hunger and tired from fasting and standing...
      Smoking breaks your fasting.
      Recommended.
Suhur there is barakat (Bukhari 1923, FAsting) Nsai 2162, Fasting says don't neglect it, 2166 & abu Dawud 2343, Fasting it is difference between us and ahl kitab in Sahih Muslim 1096, shortly before fajr abu Dawud 2344, eat dates in Abu Dawud 2345, up until Fajr Abu Dawud 2346, bukhari 1918 to eat until dawn athan,
Said al Khudri said Prophet peace and blessings be upon him said : do not abandon it even if you only take a sip of water, Verily, Allah and His angels send blessings upon those who take the pre-fasting meal.”
      Source: Musnad Aḥmad 11086
Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Al-Arna’ut
Some scholars say Suhur is Wajib due to hadith Suhur is fard on prophets... this shws ahl kitab changed their fasting rules too, but it's not fard.
Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, we company of prophets have been commanded to delay our pre-fasting meal, to hasten to break our fast, and to place our rights hands over our left hands in prayer.”
      Source: Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān 1770

Wasil is continuous fast, bunch of hadiths on them in Sahih Bukhari, 1965 etc.

      5 ppl excused from fasting.
      1. siq
      2. traveler
      3.menses
      4. bresstfeeding
      5. unconscious
person who is siq and we think he will get better, he can break fast and make it up later.
if a person is siq and wont get better, like a very elderly person he can break his fast and is there fidya on him? Strongest opinion is there is a fidya on him if he can afford it.
Fidya is food amounting a meal, like a mudd (or 4 sa'a or handfuls), for every day missed.
Know Islamic measurements, like Zakat is passed on moon months, but not sun months.
      2 :20 :00 -
can a person break their fast if it involves saving a life... - Yes
A person drowns, even if a person is of opposite sx you can save them...
if you are siq and fasting delays the cure or worsens the pain or is life thretening you shouldn't fast.
      2 :30 :00 -
If its 23 hours day, he should fast, day fajr isha all at one time.
If a person misse iftar and suhur and thinks he is likely to get sick he can break it,
traveler - if a person finds harm in fasting, its haram for him to fasting.
if its hard while traveling, it's makruh.
if its the same... scholars say Allah loves we take ease like we take commands, others say Ramadan is blessed so it's iktilaf.
Hanafis say once you start a voluntary fast you have to end it...
      2 :40 :00 -
Does a person who travels for haram get no ruqsa, no breaking fast or combining and shortening prayers?
Scholars say no, in this case he is sinning to take the ruqsa...
does the traveler break his fast in his house or when he starts to travel?
Kuraibi saw Anas bin Malik and his riding beast was ready called for food and he ate... Kurabi asked is this sunnah, he replied sunnah
Tirmidhi then commented on it and even mentioned views of sahaba... he differred the traveler in fasting and prayer. a traveler can combine in his house but not shorten utle he leaves.
      TRaveling is based on customs.
      2 :50 :00 -
3rd category of ppl forbidden to fast is a menses grl, unlike previous two she doesn't have a choice, she sins if she fasts on it.
if a grl menses finishes few minutes before fajr but she hasn't cleaned, she still has to fast and can clean up.
can a grl take meds to stop menses to fast, as long as it doesn't cause her harm.
Aisha Radiyallahu anha would pay back her fasting missed in Ramadan in sha'ban.
Category iv Preg or Nisa breast feeding.
      1. if she is sacred for her well being.
      2. she fears for herself & child.
      3. only fears for child.
      3 :00 :00 -
There is no dispute in all 3 situations she can break her fast.
Scholars dispute how she can make it up though.
Ishaq ibn Ruhaya, and ibn Umar an ibn Abbas and Saeed ibn Jubari....
if nisa breaks fast for herself has to bring it back, make up the fast like a marid.
If she fears for the child only, she can't take ruling of a siq person, she has to make up the fasting and do fidya...
if she fears for herself and baby she just has to make up the fasting.
      5th category
unconscious like a person in a coma, pen is lifted...
      3 :10 :00 -
if a person has short term insanity...
a person who is a hard deep sleeper isn't in a ruling of an excused as he can wake up physically and mentally.
if a person was insane for 1 week into Ramadan, he doesn't have make up the first week?
      3 :20 :00 -
if sister is able make up Ramadan before Shawwal 6 days do so but it's not mandated, Aisha used to bring back the fasting for Ramadan in sha'ban.
how to make up missed Ramadan? Fast as much nawafil as you can.
      same with sunnah Salat.
If you have two houses you can't say you a traveler if you travel between them.
a person said can I steal 10 dinar and give one in sadaqa to expiate... Abu Hanifa said who said the one you give is accepted as you stole?
      basis of question is bad.

Note: I’ve not written those things which I have already written before from other lectures.
      Meaning of Siyam
      Fasting is three things:
      1. Intention to worship
      2. Staying away from certain things
      3. Timing
      ___________________________________________
The 2 Aspects of an Intention
      The intention is for things:
      1. Who are you doing this action for
      Also known as Ikhlas.
      2. Distinguishing one righteous action from an another righteous action
      Separating the Ibadaat.
Also seperating the acts of worships from your norms.
      Q) Does one intention suffice for the whole of Ramadan?
There is difference opinion on this issue based in evidences. To be on the safe side, come with an intention everyday. The fact that you woke up for Suhoor is an intention.
      Intention for voluntary fasts:
If the fasts are voluntary, you can come up with the intention even on the day only if you haven’t done those things yet which break the fast.
      ___________________________________________
      Wisdom of Fasting
      Fasting is legislated:
      1. So that you gain Taqwa.
Ali bin Abi Talib said Taqwa is four things:
      > To be scared/fear of Allah
      > To act upon Quran and Sunnah
      > To be happy with whatever Allah has given you even if it’s little (Contentment)
      > To prepare for the day of departure
      2. It destroys desires.
      3. It weakens the influence of Shaytan.
Fasting makes the veins tighten/come close to each other (because of not eating much) and we know Shaytan flows the in the veins like blood. So by fasting, you’re weakening the influence of Shaytan it has on you.
      4. It reminds the blessings of Allah you have.
      5. Training of Self-Discipline
You learn that I have control over my Nafs and the Nafs doesn’t have a control over me.
      6. The concept of sincerity really manifests in Ramadan.
      7. You feel what the poor people are going through.
Side point: A bird needs both wings to fly. Each wing is opposite but they both need together. So the person has fear (which is the left wing) and hope (which is the right wing) and the head of the bird is love. With those three you can get to Allah سبحانه وتعالى.
      ___________________________________________
      Obligatory things while fasting:
Nothing specific for obligations. It is the same throughout the whole year. However there are things that are Haram:
Note: Sins don’t break the fast
      1.Stay away from lying.
      2. Stay away from idle speech (Lugw).
      ___________________________________________
      Suhoor & Iftar
      Why Suhoor is legislated?
Suhoor is a Barakah from Allah. So don’t reject the Barakah from Allah.
The difference between it fasting and the fasting of Ahlul Kitab is Suhoor (they left it after their books were distorted) and we know we oppose them in every way (our religion revived it again).
Note: It is not Wajib to eat Suhoor.
      Issues related to Suhoor
•If you have food in your hand and the Adhan starts, you eat it.
      Issues related to Iftar
      •You hasten to break it.
•Break it with dates or water if dates are not available (Sunnah is to sip it don’t gulp it).
      >Prophet ﷺ used to pick the seed of date in between the two forefingers after eating it and then threw it away (which is hygiene).
•Toothbrush fall under the category of Siwaak meaning it has the same reward (rulings will be same as well).
      •Toothbrushing is allowed.
      •Tasting the food is allowed.
•If someone has sexual intercourse (before Suhoor) and then slept without Ghusl, his fast is valid.
•Sniffing the Buhoor is not allowed as per the Hadith of not sniffing water in Wudhu.
•Swallowing saliva doesn’t breaks the fast as it is something from inside the body not outside.
      ___________________________________________
      Things that break the fast
Principle: Whatever a man is told generally in Shari'a, the woman is told the same unless there is distinction.
      • If someone forgot that it’s Ramadan and they had intercourse, they are forgiven.
      • Anything that goes inside your mouth whether it is nutritious or non-nutritious, it will break the fast. As for other areas of the body, there is a condition. If it provides nutrition to the body, it will break the fast for e.g Glucose. If not, it will not.
      • If you broke the Niyah of fasting during fasting, your fast is broken as the intention has to be carried till the end.
      Issues related to sexual intercourse
•If both the genitals of male and female come in contact, this is Jam’ah and it will break the fast whether there is ejaculation or not (+ there will be expiation).
You can feed the 60 people all in one day + you can give the raw food to them without cooking + you will have to give the well known food to them.
      • These rulings don't apply on voluntary fasts but still don't play with Allah's boundary.
•The Qadha of Ramadan will have the same ruling as of Ramadan.
•What if a person did intimacy and then gave the expiation and then commited intimacy again the same day, Imam Ahmad said he has to give Kaffara again (even though the fast was broken).
      • Some scholars say the expiation is for both and some say only the man but which seems aparent is they both have to give expiation.
      • There is no expiation on the one who fulfills himself through other ways except of sexual intercourse.
•There are some countries where there is no day or night for 6 months respectively or where the day is very long. What do they do? They follow the closest neighboring countries (estimate). Evidence? The hadith of Dajjal when Prophet ﷺ told one day will be like an year then a month and so and then the Sahaba asked what about the Salah? Do we only pray one Salah? The Prophet ﷺ
said, No! You pray all and calculate/estimate (count).
      Important Question:
      Q) Does every country have to follow the moon sighting of one country or their own sighting? Let’s divide into three categories:
      1. The lands are very far from each other so much so that they don’t share the timing.
For e.g, 🇦🇪 and 🇦🇺. By consensus of scholars, they don’t follow each other.
      2. It’s one country that is very close to each other.
For e.g, 🇵🇰 and 🇮🇳 By consensus, they have to follow each other.
      3. Every country follows their own.
This is the strongest opinion. Evidence for it is Sahih Muslim 1087

The 5 categories of people who are excused from fasting
      1. Sick
      2. Traveler
      3. Menstruation
      4. Pregnant/Breastfeeding
      5. Unconscious (مجنون)
      1 ) Sick
The 2 categories of sick people
      1. A person who is ill and we hope he’s gonna become better or the illness’s gonna go
Ruling: This person will break his fast and will bring it back later on. Simple!
      2. A person who is ill but there is no hope for him to become better any sooner
Ruling: Example for this category is an elderly man or woman. The scholars all agree that he will break his fast but is there expiation on him, there’s a discussion on it. The strongest opinion is that there is an expiation on him and the Fidya is food. The amount of it is a Mud (as said by most of the scholars including the Shafiyah) which equals 30 people as of today.
Note: A mud roughly is size of your palms when you make dua.
      Q) If the person from 2nd category one day wakes up and the doctor tells him you’re fine. You’re illness is gone. Will he bring back those missed fasts? No! The Fidyah he gave was enough for it.
Note: The traveler will have to make up for his fast.
      Issues
      Q) Is it permissible to break one's fast for the sake of saving someone's life?
It’s a must to save someone’s life. However, that person will have to bring back his fast.
      Q) What constitutes of a sickness for one to be excused from fasting?
If fasting’s gonna Increase the pain or delay the cure, then you can break your fast.
      Q) If one begins to feel dizzy and scared about his health while fasting, can he break his fast?
He’s allowed to break his fast only on high speculations.
      2) Traveler
      The 3 categories of Traveler
      1. One who’s gonna be harmed if he fasts while traveling
Ruling: Fasting is haram on him.
      2. One who’s traveling but there’s a but of hardship but he’s not harmed
Ruling: This person is disliked to fast.
      3. One for whom fasting and not fasting is equal for him.
Ruling: There’s a dispute on this.
      Issues:
Notes: An action of a companion (Sahabi) by itself is not an evidence.
      Q) Who is a traveler?
It is based upon the people of that area that what they consider a traveler. There is no evidence of limiting traveler to a specific number of days or specific number of distance.
      Q) If one begins his travel while fasting, can he break it?
It’s allowed to break it but it’s better to not.
      Q) Is it permissible to travel in Ramadan for pleasure?
      Yes it is permissible.
      Q) Whatsoever the ruling on one who travels in pursuit of sin?
That person is a criminal. He is not allowed to shorten the prayers, to combine the prayers or to break his fasts.
      Q) When is a traveler permitted to break his fast?
That which seems apparent is that he can break his fast even in his house. Evidence in the lecture (I can’t find the Hadith).
      Q) If a traveller lands in a place where the people are fasting, what does he do?
You just have to bring back that day.
      3) + 4) Women on Menstruation/Postnatal Bleeding
I have left this part for later.
      5) Unconscious/Insane
Note: There is a difference between someone who is unconscious and someone who is insane. The one who is unconscious is sleeping but the insane one is awake and he can talk to you. He’s just not got sanity but one thing which they share is they both don’t know anything.
      Different scenarios
      Q) Someone who became unconscious the entire day.
That person’s fasting is not Sahih because he has no intention. If he gains consciousness, that which seems apparent is that he will not bring it back because the pen was lifted from him. He takes t he ruling of a Majnoon.
If he wakes up for a bit of the day, he takes the ruling of sleeping. He will carry on his fasting and will not bring it back.
A person who was insane half the day is insane.
      Q) A person who sleeps the entire day, does he takes the ruling of unconsciousness?
He is not considered unconsciousness because you can wake him up + his Aqal hasn’t gone.
