I've never known a U-Haul agent shop to check plates upon a return. Anyone of a dozen previous renters could have attached the phoney plates.

This could be cleared up, if these dudes are "innocent." Most U-Haul shops take pictures before it leaves. They caught that tag in the shot, and if it's the same - it's on the shop, but likely it was these Nazis, and the Troopers are right to gather their info and charge them.
The U-Haul shop likely has security cameras, too. These guys are Nazis, so my money's on - they're guilty.

Nope, every time i've ever rented a uhaul or car they always always check the plates and walk around the car with me. Of course that doesn't mean all employees are good but giving the wrong car to someone is a big mistake.

I have rented from Enterprise and discovered that the tags had expired a year earlier. I called and told them I wouldn't drive it back unless they could fix the problem.

This has all the earmarks of a set up. Why would they track a U-Haul from the air?. I've rented many U-Hauls and never had them check the plates the vin or nothing else. U-Haul literally checks for body damage and hand you the keys and you're done. Two-tiered justice system at work.

They tracked it because it was at a rally for domestic terrorists. Also, officers run just about every plate they see. The plate was fictitious and barely attached. They were at the rally, swapped to a fake plate, then drove off.

This is not at all the drivers fault or his concern, it is a rented a truck has has plausible deniability and no reason to ever check a tag, it is the responsibility of the rental agency to make sure the vehicle is legal. And nobody try to tell me they have a responsibility as a driver of a rental vehicle, even mechanics are exempt of making sure a vehicle is legal they test drive.
This stop had nothing to do with tags. Patriot Front is on the domestic terrorism watchlist- white supremacists with a taste for organized violence. They had just left a rally with a truckload of riot gear. The cops already knew who was in the truck, and what was in the back. These wingnuts may/may not have changed the plate, but 3 nazis with tim mcveigh haircuts in a rental truck probably should be pulled over and have their plans disrupted anyway.

Thats totally incorrect! U-Haul dealers are always renting out vehicles missing $hitloads of proper documentation. I know this because I ran a U-Haul corporate store in Lansing MI. U-Haul rents their vehicles based on "unit" numbers, Easily posable they rented that to them the way it was. Minimum wage workers don't generally go the extra mile for a $hitty company like U-Hail, and if they're busy anything could pass through even corporate lots. And since that plate is from AZ (where U-Haul is located) it more than likely is their plate.
The bigger problem here is a plate that doesn't come back to anything, only federal agencies and police departments get that kind of treatment.

How can a plate number not exist? Are there certain plates created that are kept from police databases?
They show up in the database. If it's a "special" plate, there'll be a code that the dispatcher uses to tell the cop it's a law enforcement vehicle. "Normal" government vehicles have government tags on them. In this case, there is something 'fishy' going on with the plate on this vehicle and it's probably the Patriot Front that did it.

I rented a car at hurts rental car after 4 days I took it back only to find out that I had a rental car that wasn't the car the paperwork said I had and the paperwork they gave me in an envelope was actually paperwork in someone else's name and 3 months passed and I still didn't get a bill on my credit card for any rental

The funny part about all of this is that the cops are no longer playing around with these guys. My guess is that the gang itself put the fake plates on the vehicle, to make it harder for groups like SPLC and others to track and trace. On a police stop like this, they're screwed. A good follow-up would be to contact You-Haul and ask if that was actually their plate -- was there a mix-up, etc. The actual real plates might be hidden in the truck somewhere. Like behind the seat.

Since the OKC bombing, cops get pretty nervous when right wingnuts start renting uhaul/ryder trucks. Remember OKC? The feds certainly do. The whole point of this stop was to disrupt their plans. Fortunately these wingnuts threw on a fake plate, so the cops took the opportunity to get the truck towed along with whatever weird ass riot gear they had. Notice that nobody in the truck argued too much about the plate? If the cops were towing your uhaul wouldn't you argue at least a little? They got off easy, and the cops broke up the party. If the truck had been tracked by helicopter, the cops may have installed those plates to give them 'probable cause' to stop it and hold the driver. Not enough info.

Why are the police bad at their job? The plate was fictitious, criminals change plates on vehicles all the time. The officer is clearly heard saying the plate came back to nothing. That means the plate was manufactured outside of official means. Kind of like photocopying a $20 and trying to pass it off as a real one. Then why were they tracked, stopped and harassed? Nothing illegal was found but the State Police made a huge issue over what could turn out to be a legitimate mistake by U-haul. U-Haul has had this or something similar to this happen to people before. Something dumb such as the truck may have been in a maintenance facility and they removed the plate and it got mixed up with an old plate that was being sent back. The only thing I've ever seen U-Haul ppl look at when they give the paperwork over is the U-haul vehicle ID number. The counter ppl just assume the vehicle from U-Haul is good,
You clearly decided to comment without watching the video. The officer is clearly heard saying the plate does not come back to anything. Meaning fictitious plate. Uhaul didn't mix plates up, the plate was run and came back with nothing. That means someone made it in their garage. Let's also keep in mind the fictitious plate was on a vehicle identified as leaving a terrorist rally. 1+1 is absolutely equalling 2 in this case.
