I do think that charging on board makes more sense than just to have electric driving in zero emission zones. Greetings from Finland! I am looking at buying a cupra Leon plug-in hybrid, but am torn between the hatch and estate. After watching this fabulous video, the estate is the one for me. tomorrow I am viewing a hatch, and Friday the estate (which is the same spec as the one you drove). Hybrid makes sense here in terms of cheaper to buy, cheaper running costs, etc.
16:39 The artificial sound is definitely annoying. Not one person without interest in cars would buy this very vehicle. And a person with interest in cars wouldn't buy a 1.4 inline 4 if they wanted that much noise within the car... My initial thoughts at 15:33 were in hope that the noise was artificial. I hope there is an option within the menu to disable that, otherwise I'd go as far to disable it electronically. It's just unnecessary. A high speed cruise in silence is more valuable for such a car.
Good review guys, as always! Thanks for this! The car's nice overall, however, as Thomas said in the review, they went too far with the fake engine sound. To me that sounded like a V8... But when you think that under the hood you have an inline 4, 1.4 liter... It's kind of disappointing. I get it that Cupra wants to be the sportier branch of Seat, but hey, it's a hybrid under the hood not a 4L V8, you know. And over-exaggerated engine sounds are also plaguing other car makers, not just Seat (sorry, Cupra). Fantastic review Thomas, as ever (we won’t compare to the U.K. reviews!) Well, having driven the Leon and Octy PHEV, this is just about as comfy. I come from a Mk3 so this feels familiar, maybe to similar? But more supple and grown up. The electric boost of torque is great, more rear legroom for the kids when not working (compared to Mk3) and overall better looking than the Octy makes this a good choice. Being a work lease car, really it’s a no brainier to chose this over a FR or Xcellence PHEV. It’s the batteries that cost, so I might as well choose with my heart just a couple of extra quid a month - I will never be able to afford this on my own, but if my lease car must be ULEV and I have no driveway to charge a full EV, this costs no more than a regular Leon/Octy. Shame the Formentor boot was just a little too small for family holidays as it looks soo great, especially the rear 3/4s view. Mmmm! 🤣
Looking at the last of the Seat Cupra R ST 4 Drives .....I would love to hear your thoughts on that particular car over and above the new Cupra Leon. Use my car for business travel and currently drive a VW Passat 190 R-Line, comfortable but boring. I want something exciting and comfortable and still practical. Will the Seat tick all the boxes? Thanks
I find the older one better looking, this one is too tame generally, not just the Cupra version. Too bad for the last Leon, they could have made a better effort for the end.
I bought a very well equipped Cupra Leon Sportstourer. List price incl. transfer was a bit over 45,000€, I paid 31,100€ at a Seat dealer in Saxony (whereby the government purchase premium of 4.500€ is already taken into account).
Great to see you back Thomas! And great Review as always. Many thanks. Not sure I could live everyday with the firm ride of that car on the UK's torn up Public Roads. Yes, agree Thomas, at approx 32:45 you demonstrated that those centre displays are very distracting - lucky you're a good driver; but not so good for untrained drivers! And you felt more at home in the previous generation... interesting.
Around 33 mins you talk about voice control. My disappointment with the voice control system (in a SEAT ST rather than a CUPRA SP specifically) is that it is limited to controlling temperature or navigation. You can't, for example, control driver assistance system settings or even change the ambient colour lighting settings. Voice control is only going to be significantly advantageous if you can control driving functions via voice and avoid looking away from the road to an interface to touch a screen.
The Cupra is far cheaper than the Skoda and looks much better than the VW. Also lease rates are incredibly low for the Cupra. Got the exact same version like this one here in the video and it’s at around 200€ per month. So if you want to go for the best deal, take the Cupra 👍 Nice content by the way 👍
Great review as always. I do like it, but I have a choice between this and the Mercedes CLA 250e Shooting Brake, maybe the classy look inside and out of the Merc might swing it. I am torn between them.
what's that buffering sound everytime you accelerate the Leon??? and no, it's not the artificial created engine note, it's something else which is clearly audible on the video!!!

Cupra stands for "Cup Racing"...I don't know how fake-exhausts, generated sound and a questionable hybrid-system fit in there. For me this brand is kind of unnecessary and unauthentic. As Part of seat it's a good addition to the lineup but the "concept" of Cupra isn't very substantial.
8:48 The bread cover still lives on, I see! 😂 Saw this even in the review of the Hyacinth Red Mercedes-Benz GLE. Wow. Time flies. That cover is older than Coronavirus. 😂
The Seat Leon definitely is when you have travel assist. But somehow I also realized while driving a longer time now, that this steering doenst seem to react to it. Might be a thing of the sports steering wheel. I ll investigate.
Sorry but cupra killed the cupra with this version.. and to top it off.. the horrrible spacey sound.. it sounds like max 3000rpm.. yugh and no 300hp version for NL =(. Great review as always!
So the new Cupra is not really a Cupra. Its stance is too high, its engine is not the same either. If you want what a Cupra is supposed to be then the 2019 ST 300 4Drive is a better idea if you can find a used one with low mileage.
Yeah i had a 5f cupra st 300 and totally agree. No hybrid or lesser engines should have the cupra badge. Like the formentor why is there even a 1.5tsi option.
Nothing can excuse fake exhausts... I am for example a huge AMG fanboy despite loving BMWs, but these fake exhausts they put on AMGs are just ridiculous :/
@@hermannmatthes3221 I owned a leon 290 (2017), I like a lot of brands and I am not biased. I just made an example for fake exhausts, I could go on with Audi, Ferrari, Seat, VW and so on... so what exactly are you trying to tell me? That I shouldn't comment on something that "isn't meant for me"?
I prefer the 300hp petrol version because I don't want to be carrying dead weight when the batteries are not fully charged and can't provide all the electric power. These type of hybrids are made just to comply with emission regulations but they are not sporty cars. When the battery range decreases the performance decreases too. As a car enthusiast I hate these types of cars. You end up wasting more fuel due to the +250kg of extra weight and theres more stuff that can go wrong. But people who don't know nothing about cars fall for these marketing tricks ("hybrid sportiness"). It's impossible to mix real performance with hybrid technology. I'd rather buy a used Prius as a city car and then a Mini JCW or Clio RS just to have fun. Or a used Golf R kombi instead of this Seat.
It all depends on the way each driver use their cars. I think this car is an excellent option for some people, clearly not for everyone. Fortunately there's plenty to choose from.
Imagine everyone driving in a city purely electric with that car: quiet and clean. Yes, ideally u need to charge it, but u gain energy with recurperation. In a city scenario it will be cheaper to run. U can heat up/cool down the car remotely. Cannot do the same with 300 or 30000 hp pure ICE engine. And it's not 250+kg, it's around 160kg. So, 2 adults. I am a car enthusiast who drives pure hot hatches as daily and I made a choice to get that car now exactly for those reasons, not to comply with some regulations. Let's be honest, with 310hp all wheel drive cupra u ARE still carrying dead weight of those hp and all wheel drive, cuz most of the time ur car will drive in 100-150hp range only through front wheels. And it's not always about pure power, it's about power delivery. Instant torque with 245hp can feel much better most of the real world driving time than 800hp with a massive turbo lag.
@@daviddegea920 For me it is the perfect choice. I like the design extremely well. I drive almost only short distances, charge only at home (40% via my own PV system, the rest is green electricity), occasionally need a large cargo volume or the trailer hitch for a bike rack or trailer. And when I do have to get on the highway, I also like to drive a little faster. I ordered it last month (a bit over 45,000€ list price, I have to pay 31,100€), delivery is expected in June.
@@dragospahontu if it's not a plug-in car, u don't get money support from the government. With a plug-in u can virtually drive to work(at least) forever and produce zero emissions.

Thanks
did anyone ask for a Cupra brand from SEAT/VW? I do not understand how they are going to sell these with all the competition.
I find the older one better looking, this one is too tame generally, not just the Cupra version. Too bad for the last Leon, they could have made a better effort for the end.
It would be cool if they put price of the model they tested in description.
I bought a very well equipped Cupra Leon Sportstourer. List price incl. transfer was a bit over 45,000€, I paid 31,100€ at a Seat dealer in Saxony (whereby the government purchase premium of 4.500€ is already taken into account).
@@hermannmatthes3221 That's an amazing price. Congrats on new car. It really looks amazing.
39.000 Euro entry, 47.000 fully equipped test vehicle
Oh, I notice the thumbnails from some older videos like with the BMW X3 PHEV ave changed back to the default style. 🤔😢
Autogefühl at it again. Perfect content. 🤗
happy new year!
hey , good to see you in 2021! this is a great car but i am waiting for the new Dacia Sandero Stepway 2021 review .
Said nobody ever
happy new year!
And you felt more at home in the previous generation... interesting.
thanks m8! Yeah indeed 19" is just too too large for comfort on this one
Happy new year! Nice car, but I think I will wait for the 310 HP version to be available
happy new year! we ll keep u updated :)
Always a 'KICK ASS' review by Thomas!
The Cupra Leon looks good, very dynamic looks
Gotta LOVE this SPORTY WAGONS👌🏻
Around 33 mins you talk about voice control. My disappointment with the voice control system (in a SEAT ST rather than a CUPRA SP specifically) is that it is limited to controlling temperature or navigation. You can't, for example, control driver assistance system settings or even change the ambient colour lighting settings. Voice control is only going to be significantly advantageous if you can control driving functions via voice and avoid looking away from the road to an interface to touch a screen.
Agree
The Cupra is far cheaper than the Skoda and looks much better than the VW. Also lease rates are incredibly low for the Cupra.
Got the exact same version like this one here in the video and it’s at around 200€ per month.
So if you want to go for the best deal, take the Cupra 👍
Nice content by the way 👍
200euros per month to lease the Cupra Leon? That doesn't sound right...
@@AlexisDelatolas and it’s not even the hatchback but the estate wagon 🤷♂️ lucky me
@@erics.3931 insane, will done!
Great review as always. I do like it, but I have a choice between this and the Mercedes CLA 250e Shooting Brake, maybe the classy look inside and out of the Merc might swing it. I am torn between them.
Cheers! Seen our CLA review?
how do you change in electric mode (31:25 min) from the lever or buttons from central console ? (I saw you did not touch the screen).
Hope you'll get an El Born soon!
happy new year! we ll keep u updated :)
You are actually amazing in reviewing cars. Have you also done the Cupra Formentor E-Hybrid?
Got this one on the Formentor: ua-cam.com/video/obfAQId-qDY/v-deo.html
And this: ua-cam.com/video/wb7v_SHV5FY/v-deo.html
@@autogefuehl thank you😱🔥
what's that buffering sound everytime you accelerate the Leon??? and no, it's not the artificial created engine note, it's something else which is clearly audible on the video!!!
Yes, it’s the artificial sound, however the camera microphone does not really make it sound like it does irl.
those fake exhaust makes me cry.
Good car but like you said the real cupra is the one with the petrol engine . I hope you can make a new video with petrol one
Is that good for Bergfahr in winter?
►Compare the 1.5 TSI Seat Leon Sportstourer: ua-cam.com/video/teyB4N3Vr2E/v-deo.html
►Compare the Skoda Octavia RS iV: ua-cam.com/video/kIkX-P9jTbs/v-deo.html
Looks beautiful i think, nice way to stand out from other vw model
I think that’s quite okay! Good review thx
Exactly!
True, Cupra really took a step back. New management or something? Feels like they took a step in a very wrong direction.
Think i'll be keeping my 2016 400 bhp 280 cupra st ...
Hey AG team. Will you also do a take on the Cupra ST 310HP 4drive?
sure, soon we ll do 300 hp hatch
Do they not offer a fast Cupra anymore? Thought that was the idea behind the Cupra brand may as well get the FR seat leon estate now 😔
They do
estate version has a 310hp 4wd 0-100km in 4.9 sec.
8:48 The bread cover still lives on, I see! 😂 Saw this even in the review of the Hyacinth Red Mercedes-Benz GLE. Wow. Time flies. That cover is older than Coronavirus. 😂
hahah =)
actually I renewed it at some point hehe
@@autogefuehl Hehe. Good to know. 🤗
Mein Favorit ist dieser ST. Wenn das "Knattern" im Cupra-Mode nicht wäre.
The bronze look is nice
Fake exhausts on a Cupra car, thats just ridiculous.. i might be interrested in this car, but those exhausts are a big downside :(
At 80kph is sounded like a low reving diesel but that could just be my Mac. Didn't sound good though.
My next car... just a bit more time
I heard it's just "RS" not "VRS"
Clean interior like other VAG models.
Maybe Corolla is better
why not have 18" wheels insted of 19"?????
Are you sure the steeringwheel is capacitive in this model?
The Seat Leon definitely is when you have travel assist. But somehow I also realized while driving a longer time now, that this steering doenst seem to react to it. Might be a thing of the sports steering wheel. I ll investigate.
I did ask. It does have the capacitive steering wheel. Though I wondered myself it didnt make the impression
Thank you for checking, keep up the good work, I really enjoy watching your reviews!
The only question is: How long will the construction side will still be there for the assistant systems test? And what will happen afterwards? ;-)
a sporty volkswagen hybrid that isnt a volkswagen and that we should pretend isnt a SEAT either.. whats going on here?
Fake engine noise sounded like a diesel train when you floored it on the autobahn.
Love it
Happy new year guys. Wishing you nothing but the best of 2021. And most importantly Heath.
Well done 👍
I wonder if it has the same software problems as Volkswagen Golf 8 ...😈
Yes
Yes.
Volkswagen has heard you and they won't release another car until they figure out this system
@@dragospahontu ofc 🤣👍
@@_b_k yup, it's not their fault.
It's the suppliers fault, but ofcourse VOLKSWAGEN chose the supplier.
I’m waiting for the new Citroën C4 test
Looks like a fricking suv. Why is it so high up it's legs???
Sorry but cupra killed the cupra with this version.. and to top it off.. the horrrible spacey sound.. it sounds like max 3000rpm.. yugh and no 300hp version for NL =(. Great review as always!
So the new Cupra is not really a Cupra. Its stance is too high, its engine is not the same either. If you want what a Cupra is supposed to be then the 2019 ST 300 4Drive is a better idea if you can find a used one with low mileage.
Oh and if your battery runs out of juice.. you have an cupra with 150ps 😂👍🏻
Nope, as an 5F Cupra ST R owner I say, no, this is just not cutting it...
Yeah i had a 5f cupra st 300 and totally agree. No hybrid or lesser engines should have the cupra badge. Like the formentor why is there even a 1.5tsi option.
You are right about the sound effects on this car, sounds too fake. These almost are sounds of jaguar f-type. 🙄
Nice car
A lot of performance for just a 1.4L
Nothing can excuse fake exhausts... I am for example a huge AMG fanboy despite loving BMWs, but these fake exhausts they put on AMGs are just ridiculous :/
The car is a plug-in hybrid station wagon, not a sports car. Totally useless for an AMG fanboy.
For me, Skoda Octavia RS
It seems quieter than Seat
@@clark5583 what about the Toyota Camry? Maybe it's better.
@@dragospahontu if it's not a plug-in car, u don't get money support from the government. With a plug-in u can virtually drive to work(at least) forever and produce zero emissions.
