We mostly talk about world coins and coins in general in this video. I have been filming videos at Harry's Coin Shop for some time now and you all have asked for a Richard video so here it is! I love everything about this coin shop. The organization. The cleanliness. The amount and diversity of inventory. And especially the people who work there. Very humble, honest, friendly and knowledgeable. Wish my LCS was like this.
From the perspective of a new world coin collector just going after any coin from any country find Richard's deeper perspective on importance and diversity of world coins inspiring and making me think bit more deeply about the aim.
Once again these guys tricked me into learning stuff.
I share Richard's passion. I started collecting coins when I was 9 years old. I am now 71. By learning about coins you can learn about history, economics, geography and world politics. I started with U.S. coins and sold that collection as a down payment for my first home in 1979. There was dry spell until after 1997, my dad passed away and I inherited some money. Took up U.S. gold type sets which I sold again in 2011 to help pay for a retirement home (which I now live in. Then I took up Latin Monetary Union coins and did that until 2019. I sold those coins to work on another collection. The coinage of the Soho Mint in Birmingham, England. The first coinage in the world struck under power (steam) was in 1789. The U.S. did not start until 1836. I saw the cartwheel Richard was offering, that is 2 ounces of pure copper. It was unpopular because of its size and fewer than 500,00 were minted. On the other hand the one penny version (1 ounce of copper) was very popular and 44 million of those were struck. The first official government coinage struck under power. The 1789 striking was a 1/2 penny token.

2:21 It's called Maria Theresia Taler in 833 silver a bit over 23 grams fine silver. In Switzerland where i live you can find those coins a lot (the X after 1780 marks the restrike).
The Dutch word is Daalder. We don't use it anymore but before the Euro we still had a 2.5 guilders coin called Rijksdaalder.
Cool all these coins of the world. I didn't expect to see trade dollars from French Indochina in this video.

And the word Dollar comes from the Dutch word Daalder. Remove the d in Daal(d)er and there you go. German word is Thaler. and so it all comes together.

The only thing I don't like about being a silver stacker is the fact that you have to pay MORE than it's worth when you buy it, then get LESS than it's worth when you sell it. The only way to make a decent profit is if the price makes a big upswing.😠
The silver piastre coin was made by France for their Colony of Indochina - which was made up of the modern nations of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia in Southeast Asia.

Amazing how much Richard knows despite being a younger guy. Probably embarasses a lot of crusty boomers at coin shows.
The German states united into the German Empire in 1871 under the leadership of Prussia, the strongest German state. There were 26 German states in the union. The states were allowed to continue minting coins under their sovereign rulers but everything else was controlled by the central government. The king of Prussia became the kaiser (emperor) of Germany. This lasted until 1918 when the kaiser was forced to abdicate and Germany became a Republic.

I have the pleasure of knowing Richard, AKA Shorty. He used to work here in Sacramento at one of our local coin shops .very very smart and knowledgeable kid. Harry and Adrian are very lucky to have him, in my opinion. I can't wait to take the trek up there someday and visit Harry's coin shop and say hi to Shorty.👍🙂🇺🇲

Richard is a humble walking enclopidia on so.many different coins. Saw him on earlier vidios having no trouble to quickly pick out counterfeit coins. Wonder if both of his parents were involved in coin collecting for him to know so much at such a young age.

I love world coins Silver Dragons. I am more a collector than a stacker. I am a huge history buff. I get bored with Yankee Stacking and other channels because they tend to focus more on bullion. I love gold and silver but for me its more about the history.

The Royal Mint has been making coins since the 800s, it was established by King Alfred the Great.

Thaler, pronounced kind of like taller, comes from a village in Western Bohemia which is now part of the Czech Republic. Thal means valley in German and somebody found some silver in that particular valley. A mine was established a small village, named Jachymsthal, sprang up. The old silver mine is still in use and you can take tours of the mine and museum. And yes, it is the origins of the word dollar.
I don’t even like world coins, and doubt I would start to collect them at this point, but Richard makes them fascinating. His knowledge of world coinage, even back centuries ago, is amazing!

The staff at Harry's are fabulous, Richard is knowledgeable, helpful and sincere. The George III 2p at the time of minting(1797) had the intrinsic value of 2p worth of copper hence that is why the coin is so big. A landmark British Coin.
I have a set of BU Nazi Germany Graf Zeppelin commemorative coins. It is one of my favorite items in my Worldwide collection.
Just picked up a circulated 1937 Crown locally here in Australia recently, im so curious to know what they're priced like internationally. Does he have a 1938 Crown too? (they're much rarer)

Silver dragon was right about the Dollar being named after the Thaler (German coin) not the Dutch coinage (Gulden). As a Dutch person I would've liked to claim it as coming from our coinage but it was not. The Gulden (Guilder in English) or florin was the currency of the Netherlands from the 15th century(1434) until 2002, when it was replaced by the euro. The Dutch name Gulden was a Middle Dutch adjective meaning "golden".

@@Stereotype3 Ahh, that indeed makes alot more sense! The Daalder was named after the Thaler. However I still can not find any source saying thats what the dollar was named after, all the sources I have been able to find say it was named after the Thaler. Even de Dutch wiki of the Daalder says the Dollar was named after the Thaler, not the Daalder.
It actually was as Richard said, it was named after the Leeuwen Daalder (The US called it Lion Dollar), that coin was brought into circulation end 1500s when Holland started to become independant of the Spanish (80 jarige oorlog) They refused to obey any longer to the Spanish king and got rid of his portret and added the lion instead. When the Dutch traded overseas and colonized New York in the 1600s the Leeuwendaalder was legal tender in the US next to the Spanish real because of the same size and amount of silver, they were both worth 32 stuivers. The Dutch Gulden that we knew before the Euro was devided into 100 cents and made its introduction when Holland became an offcial kingdom in the 1800s
@@ElMariachi1337 I can't find a single source that confirms what you are saying. Every single source I read said it comes from the Thaler, none seem to claim it comes from the Daalder.
The history of the dollar is a story involving many countries in different continents. The word dollar is much older than the American unit of currency. It is an Anglicised form of "thaler", (pronounced taler, with a long "a"), the name given to coins first minted in 1519 from locally mined silver in Joachimsthal in Bohemia. (Today the town of Joachimsthal lies within the borders of the Czech republic and its Czech name is Jáchymov). Thaler is a shortened form of the term by which the coin was originally known - Joachimsthaler.
Later on, the English version of the name (dollar) was also applied to similar coins, not only ones minted in central Europe but also the Spanish peso and the Portuguese eight-real piece. Both these large silver coins were practically identical in weight and fineness. Today we are familiar with the phrase pieces of eight from tales of pirates in the Caribbean.
Those coins, particularly the Spanish peso or dollar circulated widely in Britain's North American colonies because of a shortage of official British coins. That is why, after the United States gained its independence the new nation chose "dollar" as the name of its currency instead of keeping the pound.

This is among the things I prefer to have in my collection. I also like ancient greek, a few Roman and Persian, Indo-Bactrian, Kushan etc.
Medieval denars and pennies from European and Arabic areas etc.
My rarest coin, Silver Dragons - its a silver coin from ancient Persia (Iran) from around 550 AD from the reign of Khosrau I ( r. 531 to 579 AD) of the Sassanid Dynasty. The Sassanid Dynasty ruled Persia from 225 to 632 AD. Ahura Mazda, who is central figure in Zoroastrianism is on one side and Khosrau I is on the obverse.

I just assembled a type set of 1935-1945 British pre-decimal coins. Farthings to crown. No gold sovereign yet. It represents my ancestral heritage and the coin values are fascinating, Making change was for smart people. Great video!

What a nice guy! And knowledgeable. Great video. He's correct about the historical connections that coins bring to us. Not only the political leaders and royalty pictured on the coins, but holding such a piece in your hand, you have to ask, "What did buy with people buy with this coin back when it was new? The services of a blacksmith? A mug of grog?" It's amazing to hold such a thing in your hand.
For those of you wondering where the word 'dollar' cam from, the was a silver mine in the province of Joachimstal, which I think is in modern Czech Republic. They struck large silver coins of high weight and purity and a reputation for their quality followed and the coins were called, Joachimstalers, and just shortened to Talers. The Dutch Daalder used in Nieuw Amsterdam was an imitator. The dollar sign comes from the Spanish piece of 8. It origins are on the reverse. A serpent wrapped around a pillar of Hercules. This coin was made up of 8 Reales and was easily subdivided into pieces as small as one real. The size, weight and purity of this coin was the basis of the U.S. silver dollar. This coin was already in common use throughout the colonies. It is also the Pirate's silver treasure coin as opposed to the gold Doubloon which I believe was equal to 16 pieces of 8.
