Both are beautiful, but I actually like the second one better. Reminds me of a wing as opposed to just a feather. I love you showing your mistakes and struggles. It really helps other creators know that it's not all roses and perfection.
First is a Feather, the second is a Wing. Both lovely blades.
The commentary never gets old lol
Feather Damascus is one of my favorite patterns
Second one has a nicer pattern. I think the feathered would have looked better with a lower layer count.
If you think the feather would look better with a lower layer count then it would look like tiger stripes lol…
@@Nisrochs-Handbag the legend himself did say that it wwas a high layer count.
They both look awesome, Steve! Drawing out a feather after forging the split together is one of the most stressful things. They always want to split.
Yup!
Two great knife makers in one thread ;) Learned a ton off both you guys.
wow, they both turned out fantastic.. hard to pick one, but the 'not-feather' one is my favourite.
Nit gonna lie that half feather one looks dope!
I actually like the half-feather better, which surprises me. They both look amazing.
The feathers came out well on the right but the one on the left feels like a work of art
the second knife looks really dope! I really dig the lines radiating from the spine instead of the center.
Thanks for going through all this, there's a ton of work on display.
Wow that feather pattern on the first knife was amazing!
The second one for sure. It still has a feather vibe to it. Damn nice looking.
Oh my god 9.10 is absolutely devastating, so much work!
Absolutely stunning as always good sir!!
I actually really like how that single-sided feather came out! Looks great!
Your back! Yay! You can't choose between awesome and awesome! There just plan....... awesome!
Steve, I think the second knife version would look sweet with a cutting edge of a different mono steel. Both are very nice. The layering and resulting pattern density are very good. I would love a bird and trout knife with this pattern!
Both knives are pretty cool, the pattern amazing. Well done.
Amazing both of them. Think I'd personally go for the second one.
the half feather pattern looks like very heavy rainfall. i really like it :)
#1 for sure but both are awesome. Thank you GB
Both examples are very nice. I think they are equally gorgeous patterns. I sure wish I had the resources to start forging, the creative part of me has been wanting to do this type of work for about a decade now. I just don’t have the equipment or the time at the moment.
Keep up the great work
What up beetle! Always glad to see new content from you, brother! Both knives turned out great. I bet that second knife would look killer if you could take that pattern billet and put it on both sides of a high carbon core San Mai, then etch it dark and give it the ol' instant coffee razzle dazzle.
Honestly, I love you videos because you actually record the unforeseeable mishaps that pop up with trying new techniques. Personally, when I forge it's always a bit of a crap shoot about what will work and what will go totally side ways. That's what makes all this fun to me. Keep doing what you're doing, man!
It really is amazing how much work goes into this type of blade. BTW, I definitely like the second one better. Looks like flames.
What an awesome and absolutely random rant. Love it. I’m so glad I’m not the only one who’s brain squirrels so damn hard. Awesome work too. Love it!!!!
Gosh darn, those looks amazing... I always learn something here, sir
👍
The second one, I've never seen a pattern like that. Awesome video
Great work, I Like the 2nd knife. But all in all another feather in your cap. Thanks for the great tutorial.
The freaking commentary from you is amazing! I was laughing my ass off! You’re a badass!
Both are gorgeous!!!
2nd blade looks fantastic
Love the looks of both of them
Man I'm a big fan of that half feather pattern!! Feather is definitely on my list of things to make, I guess I better get started on building my forging press to do it!
I acually like the halv feather best! Super awsome!
I really like that "WING" knife!!!
Dang the pattern one the second one is awesome! It reminds me of a waterfall.
The half feather is beautiful
Steve your random rants always make me laugh, I never expect them and it's just purely random nonsense haha
What I do for my feather billets, is not weld any type of handle on, I actually do this with my butt welded mosaic as well. But if you us hammer eye tongs it allows you to work all 6 sides as needed. Then if a tiny seam in a corner opens up grind it out. I usually knock my corners down to 45's as I draw out the billet. Works great for me on my press.
The second one looks the best. Missed seeing a cool dagger from you in the challenge.
They are both awesome!!!!
Both are great looking. I think i prefer the first but I'm not sure because the second one is really cool also.
Excelente máster gracias por compartir saludos desde Argentina
Both are beautiful
I really appreciate the Beetle using the press instead of his genetically superior power hammer biceps, as to give us lesser beings a demonstration feasible for our flimsy human arms. Really enjoyed your first feather pattern video and this one is great as well!
Absolutely!
Both look great
Nice man! Making mistakes work out is a great skill
That's a tough one. They are both very cool patterns.
Both Looks Great..
I am continually amazed by how beautiful that pattern is. Amazing job Steve! I am always impressed with your perseverance despite huge setbacks! Still my favorite knife channel:)
Ty, sir!
Both are very nice.
One looks like a single feather and the other looks like an extended bird's wing! I'd have to see them with handles to pick a favorite.
Great Work!! They look Awesome!!👍
Such an Artist with chalk brother Steve!
ROFLMAO!!!
You’re a very hard worker.
The 2nd knife is my favorite
I like both... the grinding them flat after you split it certainly sharpened up the stem portion of the feather. Funny for ya... definition of irony- when ones b'day coincides with tax day..🤣
Awesome as always! Thanks for sharing.
Ad love to see you on an episode of forged in fire Steve you would make an amazing piece, both knives look awesome
both are beautiful but i give the edge to knife #2. slightly. thx for showing all blade-smiths that knife making struggles are real!
One of my favorite patterns you've made. Always wanted to see you do another.
The one sided billet would make a really dope San mai jacket over a dark etching core maybe
I like the second one, if you make a pair like that and put them back to back they would look like wings. They could be called "angel blades", I know, corny, but good.
Always a pleasure watching your videos. And showing and explaining what did go right and what didn't. I guess you have to calculate the risk with Damascus steel. Great work and those are beautiful blades. Maybe the last one looks a bit more how I like them.
Believe it or not I like both.
I really can’t tell from the pictures Green Beetle! I’ll tell you what just send them to me and I’ll let you know? Lol great work & both are awesome!
Second one looks better in my opinion. Would look amazing with lower layer count. but thats my personal preference. Maybe add in a 1084 edge for good measure. Well done regardless! Great looking knives
nice work mate, feather is the one thing that haunts me haha. Keep up the good work!
You may not like your failures. But! I can't do this at all. So I'm insanely jealous. I love the designs. Even if twist your springs the wrong way.🙂
V notch and forge weld the tip for feather. Comes out much nicer.
Ahh the funniest knifemaker-blacksmith is back at it
Great video!
12:27 is why I love your content
🙏
They're both cool, but I definitely prefer the first one. Not just the feather styling, but also the subtleness as well
Awesome looks like a birds wing
I think someone mentioned that’s what the pattern is called 🤌
second one is the one that rocks! nothing wrong with first but man would I love to change out my mini infidel blade with that pattern! a nice OTF would be sick with that pattern!
Remember when you like every forge weld you did just failed? And now you plowing out super feather Damascus
That Kardashian talk startled the hell out of me.
My Favorite is the feather, but great job as usual on both. Any plans on doing a video on the mill?
i like Both
I like the first one for the obvious reason (feather pattern)
Though I do like the other
Hell I did feather once and when I welded the split back together it was upside down from the other side
Ended up clean as all get out but like an S pattern if you will
It’s in my video list
Bro I just started on my first Damascus and feather is what I’m doing I’ve got the pattern surprisingly forged and all connected I just need to draw it out and grind to shape
Personally I like the Angel wing looking one.
Both are stunning, but I think I like the single-piece one better. (Second one you made that cleaved lopsided and you took apart.)
🤔 hmmm, tough call. Nicer? Apples n oranges. I’ll wait for the next round.
I like both but the first one is a fav for me! Awesome work, as always 😉
couldn't go wrong with either pattern, you should look into building a frame around your bottom die to separate your billet from your splitting wedge like guys use while drifting hammers/axes on presses.
Would it be too difficult to manage holding the billet up and over the splitting tool? I.e. put the splitting wedge on the bottom of the press like you would in a hardy hole on an anvil? I feel like if you can hold it you could control the movement better.
I likes the second one better
Damn, yeah I do really like the 1st one as its got some pretty cool pattern towards the centre and extending to the tip- so I'd rack that up as a success!
Now that 2nd though
Thats actually hot, a really smoking hot pattern and I've not seen anything like that. So if you can replicate it, I reckon that'll be a Greeny Beetle pattern for the ages if you can get that out consistently and maybe throw in some other elements like a little mosaic along the top, little something something on the bottom with that 'waterfall-wing' kind of look in the middle. Fantastic!
I like the second one better because of the more pronounced pattern, but the first one ain't bad either.
I have never attempted to forge anything in my life, so this is just a wild thought.....maybe less layers on the feather one would give you the more pronounced pattern on the second?
Beautiful failures, man. Chin up, you'll get it!
how many times would you have to fold two different steels until they began nearly homogenous, or appear to be?
Liked the 1st Feather Pattern...would have been cool if maybe you turned it into a straight edge blade....
Wich one do I like better? The second one.
Happy little accidents...? I liked the one on the left in your outro.
Can I have one please.. both looks impressive
It was heartbreaking to watch that billet bulge on the second splitting! Second knife turned out fantastic tho! The first one is great as well, but I really like the looks of #2. I can tell you're not happy with the results tho, so I'll spare you any further pain and I'll give you $10 for both of them. Free shipping of course!
I think you made some fine lemonade from the lemons fate handed you. Both knife patterns turned out really cool.
Note: fix the darn tootin' splittin' die 😄
Yup!
