    Dirty keto is the term used for following a keto diet without concern for food quality. For instance, order a burger from a fast food restaurant, throw away the carb-loaded bun, and only eat the burger and cheese. Dirty keto will never win any healthy eating awards, but can it be used as a way to keep your blood sugar low enough to stay on track when nothing else is available? And would it really be all that bad to just eat the burger with the bun?
    While wearing my non-prescription CGM (continuous glucose monitor) from Levels, I went to Mcdonald's and picked up a few cheeseburgers to see how the separated ingredients of a fast-food cheeseburger would affect my blood sugar and what would happen when I ate the bun and burger combo. Here’s what happened.

    I have used this method in a situation where I was trapped while traveling with people who eat garbage and had no way out. I’m a meat eater but I’m not sure my burgers were any better than just roughing it a few more hours. Now i travel with emergency grass fed beef sticks. Great experiment Dr Becky. Thank you.

      Sourdough doesn't spike my blood even half as much, but with the big IF that the bread is REALLY sour, meaning it's eaten a large amount of the Sugars. This is the same reason Sauerkraut has almost NO carbs compared the cabbage used to make it.

    I don’t understand the dirty keto label. Keto purist would have us all drinking just water and grass. Ground beef is ground beef. I don’t care if it’s grass fed or free roaming. And anything once alive is organic. When the price of free roaming and grass fed is lower than other meat, then and only then would I consider buying it. Not all of us are upper middle or higher who can afford outrageous food prices. I am on keto. A1C is now down 10 points to 5.3 and I have lost 65lbs. All without being a Keto purist. I just eat low carb.

      I think you need to go and read up on keto… you have this all wrong. And I used to be anti organic but now see the reason which I again suggest you go research. It’s about the pesticides and chemicals put on the products.

    • @Riosgirl98
      @Riosgirl98 Рік тому +5

      Jose I agree that many people including myself can't afford certain organic free range products.
      However I buy cheaper cuts and slow cook them. Organic meat can have much less injections and is not given steroids either.
      As we go further along our health journey it's imp8rtant to realise that quality of food is extremely important.
      Take for instance in the US there is an amount of antibiotics found in milk, people from.europe notice Americans being poisoned as so many people report issues with dairy there.
      You're doing great so when you are ready look into toxins in feed lot meats.

    I limit my carbs to as close as 50g or 20g daily. Sometimes no carbs at all for a day or two. I don't trust fast foods and have always been disciplined enough to never eat out at fast food establishments. I do enjoy a veggie slice or two of pizza, once a month. There are Keto buns at my supermarket, but they are so expensive. There are recipes to prepare your own KETO approved buns and breads.

    If you want to avoid carbs I would order the burger without any sauces. Also getting a burger with cheese may have spiked your sugar a bit because it likely a 51% cheese product unless stated otherwise. I would have gone with a double burger with extra pickle and onion if available.
    I’ve done this in the past with little or no change in blood sugar. An even better option is the sausage McMuffin with egg minus the cheesy bun.
    The sausage may be dirty(or not) but the egg is pristine and fresh cooked..
    And very healthy…

    Interesting video. Your videos have been very helpful to me, Thank you. It would be very interesting to see how a wide range of complex carbs and other healthy foods effect your blood sugar in this way. Comparing things like a bowl of white rice vs brown rice?, is there a meaningful difference between Basmati rice and Jasmine rice?, How does a serving of chickpeas or Quinoa spike blood sugar? etc. I am on a lower carb, no processed foods diet but I am eating small amounts of rice and complex carbs and I often wonder if I should reduce the amount of things like chickpeas, and other things like that also. Dont really want to go full keto though. Thanks again for your videos they are very balanced and free from the hyperbole you often get in this topic.

    As someone who regularly enjoys a burger, finding a better, tastier and healthier burger means I don't miss the bun at all. I choose better restaurants than fast food chains and it is so easily done I have no idea why anyone would turn to Rotten Ronnie's or any other fast food manufactured burgers. I do make most of my own meals so the occasional "dirty" take out meal where I'm removing a bun is not a big deal to me. I appreciate your experiment as it now arms me with proof whenever someone questions why I remove the bun 🙂

McD's used to be pretty picky about the meat in their burgers, not sure if that could have changed over the years. Still quite interesting seeing actual reactions to real world food. When i got really desperate I'd hit the vending machines. I always had a bag of change in my car. Just had no other option.
    No matter how hard i tried could not get my bmi down to 25. 75% of my colleagues were overweight and on medication.

While he’s not had a problem getting them so far. The increased use by dieters on keto advocates could make the hard for diabetics to get. I would like to see a double and triple cheese burger with pickles and mustard tested.
    Your bun was out of proportion to the meat.
    I would also like to see it fresh off the grill as would be happening in real life.
    And... A large coffee or iced tea consumed at the same time.
    I've never eaten a burger without something to wash it down.
    What happens when adding an after dinner walk to the equation?

    I don't know if you are saying you think a burger patty and cheese is "dirty keto" or if you are saying a fast food burger patty and cheese is dirty keto.
    I eat ground beef and cheese on keto and I do well and don't think of it as dirty keto at all.
    I think dirty keto is eating a lot of keto packaged convenience foods like snacks and keto desserts.
    An interesting test for the glucose monitor and levels software would be to eat a keto dessert that has like 25 g total carbs and miraculously has 3 net carbs because of all the added fiber and sugar alcohols.

      @beckygillaspy  Рік тому

      Dirty Keto is a term that was coined for eating keto without concern for nutrition. High-quality ground beef and unprocessed cheese prepared at home would not be Dirty Keto. Thanks for the testing idea!

      @@beckygillaspy Hi Dr Becky... If you see this comment I hope you will hear me out on something that I think is an important point that confuses many people about keto and low carb.
      The topic of food quality should be important to literally everyone regardless of what eating style they choose. Keto, lowcarb, vegetarian, Mediterranean, DASH, or any other eating style. Food quality matters. People should be encouraged to get the best quality food that THEY CAN AFFORD. But people conflate this topic with keto and think something is not keto if it isn't grass-fed beef and pasture-raised eggs and a particular kind or brand of salt, etc.
      Really, it is keto or low carb if it is at a certain carb level. And "dirty keto" really doesn't mean that people eat a lesser quality of food. Who is to say what is the correct quality that everyone must eat? Dirty keto is eating junk food labeled keto. Eating packaged and processed foods where the nutrition labels and packaging are manipulated to be misleading. Products that are not really food. I guess I think that is a very important distinction because for some people, fast food quality beef is the best they can do. but no one HAS to buy keto protein bars
