30:22 Hey that’s my level! :) Thanks for playing it Larl. I wanted my level to be an introduction into Levelhead to some of the cool things you can do with all the switching mechanics so i'm glad you like being able to see the inside even if it’s hard to understand what’s going on. For those who are curious i'll try to explain the contraptions a bit. The contraption at the top at around 35:02 is to make the sign in the beginning of the level, basically those purple cubes can go on and off by themselves but you can also control them with signals. I needed a way to have three separate states though instead of the default on and off and that is what this does. Every single time the enemy moves over and touches a button it switches to new text. If you look on the right you can see the three states. The first one is for Welcome, then To, then Levelhead. Because there is some spots where the enemy isn’t touching a button i used enemy switches (those angry looking things) to make the transitions smoother. Which is why the state doesn’t always change even when the enemy isn’t touching anything. The swirly things as carl calls them are there to time the amount of time between text changes and this is done by blocking the enemy with the purple blocks. This contraption is really jank and there are probably plenty of ways to make it better but I’m pretty new to Levelhead and this is what i came up with lol. The contraption below that which you can see better at 34:46 is to make the race countdown work. Its pretty self-explanatory, the cube starts moving trigger by the player because of the conveyers. Every time it passes a button it play a different sounds, which you can see above it, and turns on one of the blocks. These buttons here are locking unlike the ones up top meaning they stay on forever after being pressed (well until you reload from a checkpoint before they were active or restart the level of course) Yes I could have made this with the trick i used for the Kingbling but this is more fun lol My pride and joy the Kingbling anti at 36:26 is actually the easiest contraption here i think, to the right of the screen you can see an bunch of timers. When the contraption is trigger by a player detector (those eye looking things but most of them have been made invisible) the first timer at the top is started. After it is done it will start the next timer below it and this will keep going downwards sequentially. Almost all these timers will also trigger a part of the contraption like a track starting to move an item or a block falling. The timers are configured for different amounts depending on what is needed to make everything line up right. The falling boxes are there to disable stuff that already enabled instead, there’s other way to do this but this is a convenient trick. side note the message that pops-up at the end says "just restart : )" (including the signs), this is a little joke based on the fact that a Kingbling anti (or any anti) is pretty pointless in Levelhead unless there a checkpoint in there because the game has a restart from checkpoint button. Yes this does mean that softlocks are basically CP zero’s in this game lol (well kinda, not if you design the level right) The contraption at 37:10 is kinda hard to explain but it’s there to lock you into one option based on what route you pick first in the pick a path. Theres two stacks with blocks and buttons on the left, Picking either path will either remove the top block from the left stack or from the right. The block will then fall on the button opening the door and this will also active the bottom block on the path that wasn’t chosen so it can’t be picked again. This is all activated using invisible player detectors. I didn’t include the troll at 30:58 in the hint path because you can’t really see anything, it is again using invisible player detectors. If a player is detected on the middle platform it will activate the fire and show the solution, if the player lands on the far right platform this will always stay active overwriting the timing clock. That was a lot of information so good on you for reading that all if you did. Just for you here’s a pun: Why was the robot worker tired when he got home? Because he had a hard drive. ;)
It sounds like Levelhead has a lot of elements that mimic common contraptions in Mario Maker (whether inspired by SMM or not, idk), without the jank and spaghetti that comes from using niche item interactions as event triggers. That's pretty cool! Are "symbols" basically a way to connect contraptions without having to run wires everywhere?
@@jlco I'm gonna explain it more generically first in case other people care levelhead contraptions are based on switches (input) and level elements (output) every switch will have a unique way of being activated like a button that goes on/off when you press it or a lock that stays locked or a eye switch that detect the player in an area, etc. (Most of these can also be configured in various ways) switches will then send their current state to a frequency which can be permanent or temporary. These frequency can then be used to trigger one or multiple outputs. One output may also require multiple inputs to be active (or inactive instead). And while one input can only output to one frequency there's a thing called a relay that gets around this limitation. You can use a maximum of 999 frequencies The system is very reminiscent of digital logic circuit like AND and OR gates and is therefor also a bit like programming. But it's not as intimidating as that's sounds A lot of the level elements are based on mario stuff but the frequency system is way more powerful and versatile then mario contraptions in a lot of ways although less janky (although there is still jank I'm sure) Frequencies are basically wires but without a pyshical connection, so level elements can communicate from one part of the level all the way to the other no problem
@@GameFraek Sounds like a pretty neat system! If the frequencies and apparently the checkpoints have really high limits, are there any entity limits the way there are in Mario Maker (i.e. any limits low enough that you can use them for stuff without generating lag)? And are things rendered globally or can stuff despawn?
@@jlcoI'm pretty sure there aren't any real limits, there's a limit to how big a level can be based on the amount of squares in it (its grid based) which is very big and if i'm not mistaken the only limit for the amount of elements is based on your system being able to run the level at a steady framerate but i'm not 100% sure on how that works I do know that you won't run into limits that's fast at least I'm not sure how rendering and or de-spawning works

Levelhead is such an underrated platformer. I've been playing it since early access and it's fantastic. You can build all sorts of crazy levels with it.
I used to binge your videos while doing homework my freshman year of high school. On Monday I start my senior year of college. It’s great to see you’re still making good content!
It looks like the three switches pushed by the robot going around in that "behind the scene" part in levelhead might just be to time the display of "welcome to levelhead" at the beginning.
Lots of troll levels struggle with endings; they kinda seem like they just end, but this one was such a satisfying and climactic sequence with the key death and the fake out restart
I get that Levelhead is not great for monetization because of it being so much more niche than SMM2, but it really is a genuinely better game than SMM2. And I say that as someone who loves SMM2 and has watched SMM/SMM2 content pretty much daily since, I dunno, a few months before SMM2 came out? I wish there was more Levelhead content out there and am glad to see you providing some!
I loved the minecraft videos! After I saw the first one, I immediately went to twitch to watch everything in full! But I couldn't keep up with your streaming and your VODs don't seem to be saved anywhere so I'm downloading all your minecraft VODs to enjoy them IN FULL at my own pace. And I'm watching the videos once they're edited and uploaded for re-enjoyment and algorithm purposes. silly block game v good
At 1:55, items that come out of ?-boxes or brick blocks are intangible to the player for the first ≈3 seconds after they come out of the blocks, so I’d guess that the ball came from a recent,y activated block and that’s why Carl magically phased through it.
Two things. Firstly, a question, is there any way to submit level suggestions for Levelhead? Secondly, you should totally check out the level editor, it has tons of fun features (for example, Rifts can be used to make very compact and simple RNG machines, simply by connecting multiple exit portals to a single entry portal).
