@@BlueWolfStudios117 it almost happened during Falklands war, apparently British submarine was able to locate Argentina submarine but failed to attack it, Argentino sub was a more quieter diesel electric and eluded the British submarine
@@BlueWolfStudios117 Technically it only happened once during WW2, every sub-to-sub engagement of the war involved one sub being on the surface, except one. A British sub skipper managed to compute a 4-dimensional firing solution on U-864 with minimal calculations and basic information as to speed, heading etc. He guessed where the sub would dive to and fired 4 shots, only one hit. It's the only successful sub-to-sub engagement ever recorded.
Thinking that when the countermeasure ammunition was launched - my thinking is this - the torpedos would either blow up at the countermeasures' ammo without hitting the sub directly as it hit the countermeasures, or the countermeasures would detonate and cause the torpedos to go off course before the tubes blew later. I guessed for no. 1 when I first watched this movie on HBO, and sadly, I should have guessed for no. 2. Also, if I were in that sub, and if I were the sub commander, I would launch the countermeasures to be released from the sub's stern, or back, to cut back on the torpedo's impact even more, assuming that a torpedo attack can be from behind my ship.
The depiction of countermeasures in this movie (and most submarine movies) is not very detailed, though it can be forgiven in that era of movies as many of these techniques were classified and it's hard to show audiences how these things work. The countermeasure does pull the torpedo off-course, but this is in combination with a technique called forming a 'knuckle'. When the submarine rapidly changes course, it forms a knot of turbulent water behind it which momentarily masks the submarine. This combined with the countermeasure is what pulls it off-course. Using a countermeasure earlier such that it simply sits far behind the submarine, directly astern does basically nothing. A torpedo will typically just pass through, recognize it was fooled by a noisemaker, and start a search pattern which will easily pick up the original target. The torpedo has it's own sonar to do such a search. Furthermore, if the torpedo is still on a wire, it will definitely not fool the parent submarine.
Yeah, it's hilarious when movies portray stuff like this where guys that are supposed to be experts in their field ask dumb questions on behalf of the audience.
Some subs boasted strong enough hulls to tank a torpedo hit, the SSBNs were the most likely candidates. The Typhoon-class was always the front-runner in that regard, even in the game Cold Waters 9/10 times you need to successful torpedo hits to sink it.
At least in a destroyer, you can jump into the water and wait for rescue, in a submarine, that's very unlikely, death is almost certain, I think only Russian submarines have escape pods, but you'll be lucky if you can get to one in a damaged submarine
@@bombarderoazul Especially if the bilch bay gets flooded so so bad on a torpedo hit, the only way out is to seal the bilch bay. Failure to do so means the sub goes down to depths dangerous enough to create a death-inducing hull crush implosion like what happened to the Titan submersible about 4 days prior.
Nah man, destroyers have very little armor. One torpedo from a sub against a destroyer would equal a dead destroyer as well. Not to say that subs aren't just as much if not more threatening than a surface ship to the crew. Just that one's armor is not a factor.
@@compmanio36 Ship armor is irrelevant when dealing with torpedoes. The torp explodes under the ship, forming an air bubble, which means that gravity breaks the ship in half. Armor is against artillery shells and rockets. Not torpedoes.
A little before the captain gives the command "All ahead standard", wich means go ahead to standard power, because he was at 'All ahead flank (that means full power)', the bell noise indicated the confirmation of power change, if i'm not mistaken :)
If I was skipper I'd remind the Sonar guy to get a grip and stop shouting. Somewhat similar to how Gerard Butler's character sorted out his sonar guy in Hunter Killer.

Submarine battles are awesome. They’re slow-no underwater dogfights.
They almost never happen actually or very rarely are both subs underwater
Sir Humphrey Appleby happened a lot during WW2, yet indeed there arent as many any more.

Range gateing? I don't remember that exchange in the movie and I've watched it multiple times
I agree. Ican't see this scene on dvd. where's come from?
Probably a video version that includes deleted scenes.
There's a RARE DVD-Extended version - and that's where this is from. Small stuff. Nothing earth-shattering.
It's on an extended edition

Is this extended version? Some scene here is not in the original movie.

@@NACLGames interesting stuff!
Star Wars cant hang with this. This is moviemaking at the highest level.
You watch the critical drinker too?
Modern movies in general can't compete with this. They are too obsessed with "woke" culture to actually make a good film.
I wouldn't mind if the movie just had a subtitle pop up explaining the military lingo instead of making a character ask a question they'd never ask.

Best sub movie after Das Boot and Hunt for Red October.
So Popeye finally joined the Navy where he belongs.
