- Steam engine # 786 pulled the Hill Country Flyer from Cedar Park to Burnet, Texas and return on July 6, 1996. SP 786 is being rebuilt and may return in the near future. Thank you Austin Steam Train Association for making this video possible.
This engine used to sit on display outside a fire station in Austin. I used to crawl all over this (legally) when I was little... Amazing to see it go down the track!
I climbed all over it when I was all grow'd up. Saw it was gone in '08 and wondered where it went. Now I know, Yippie yi oh!
This engine is coming back - and that's simply awesome !
J Yelvington I heard the rebuild cost more than almost 3 million dollars to bring her back together
Nicholas Medovich wow that's a lot of money that's just about how much it would cost to rebuild a locomotive but I can't wait for 786 to return to steam but it's nice that this video shows her and her former glory especially that six chime whistle
J Yelvington - They were saying that 10-12 years ago. They don’t seem to have the money or expertise to do the work.
its been in pieces around America for 25 or 30 years, I cant remember. love the steam trains
very nice love those big mike's.
I was one of the original volunteers to work on the 786.
so was my grandad chuck/charles. i grew up with this train
I left Austin 10 years ago... and 786 was actively being worked on, with a plan to be back in action in a couple of years. What’s up?
After a while, with an entire generation of Central Texas people coming and going without 786, it’s time to admit that “Austin Steam Train” isn’t about steam anymore.
I can't wait for the 786 to come back in operation.
And run in my country
What a Beauty
I want this in austin again
Maybe some day we all 786 run again but when
786's K5LA has recently been reused for Norfolk Southern 475.
Okay, first of all, that’s not a K5LA, that’s a Southern Pacific 6 chime whistle. The 786 never even had a DIESEL horn to begin with! And second, the 475 worked for the Norfolk and Western railroad, NOT for Norfolk Southern! What made you think that your parents would give you permission to spread these lies?
This is what a REAL K5LA sounds like at the beginning of this video: ua-cam.com/video/DKvALglu9gE/v-deo.htmlsi=u7-BlUff-ANbdFH9
Which sounds like absolutely NOTHING like 786’s whistle!
What happen Southern Pacific 786 ?
It was taken out of service in June 1999 after a crack was discovered in the boiler. Sadly, after more than two (2) decades, this amazing steam engine is still sidelined and there is no estimated date for its return to active service. Really, a shame.
@@GeorgiaKev I thought the crack was at one of the cylinder saddles. The damage was repaired and the frame and all are back but now it's a matter of putting her back together. That will take time, money, heavy equipment, and people ... all in short supply these days. A project organizer is needed, so I'm told.
@@GeorgiaKev It was cracks in the cylinder saddle; not the boiler. Time, and money... That will get it running again!
@@mattjackson3712 I was on the train the last time 786 ran, she failed out in the middle of no where and we had to wait on an unairconditioned train in the Texas summer heat for the diesel to come rescue us. Pretty sure it was a cylinder saddle that finally failed, i don't know, I was like 9 at the time lol.
